Description: The AKR-109 is a gauss pistol seen only on the DSC Daedalus. A specially commissioned model from Anti-Force through Arakyd Industries, the AKR-109 is a peculiarity weapon to say the least, and reflects the adopted ingenuity of the Psintegrats from the Ysanna scholars of Ossus. Unlike most ranged weaponry in the common galaxy, the AKR-109 is a gauss weapon; a highly advanced type of slugthrower, meaning it utilizes projectiles similar to the mass drivers of certain starships.
Essentially a miniaturized electromagnetic railgun, the gauss hence inflicted damage by hurling projectiles at high velocities, which imparted kinetic energy and force to the target upon impact. Achieved through precisely-controlled electromagnetic attraction and repulsion, damage was thus a result of the nature and mass of the projectile and its velocity. Unlike slugthrowers, which relied on chemical combustions, the AKR gauss utilized plasma driven rounds from an electrothermal discharge. An electrical arc would vaporize the propellant into a plasma to create the requisite to propel the slug through sequenced electromagnetic fields. As such, the peak velocity exceeds the slugthrower's maximum of ~1.8 km/s to ~2.6 km/s.
Because of the high velocity at which the plasma projectile is fired, the ammunition of the AKR-109 is designed to shatter upon impact, transferring maximum kinetic impact to the designated target. The ammunition of the AKR gauss itself is a plain processed block of osmium alloy; the inner-workings of the AKR gauss simply shears off the amount of raw material necessary for a plasma projectile. This in turn allows the AKR to retain more ammunition capacity standard than blasters, as the block is shaved away as opposed to possessing individual bullets.
The most distinctive feature of the AKR-109 is it's obvious lack of a trigger. In imitation of the marksmanship of the Ysanna, only a psion (or Force Sensitive) can utilize the AKR-109 as it can only be fired via mental effort. The AKR has an "internal trigger", which can only be set of telekinetically; thus the AKR-109 is, for all intents and purposes, useless to most sentients of the galaxy. In addition, the choice of plasma slugs over blaster bolts also came from the Ysanna, who telekinetically "guided" their projectile's trajectory in midair against moving targets. This makes fully trained Psintegrats exceptional marksmen, and the ARK a unique "throwback" weapon for a new age.
