"My family, the Volkov line, has served House Ulgo for generations..."
The Volkov family has existed within the walls of House Ulgo in some capacity or another since the inception of the Great House. Their influence has waxed and waned of the generations, as with any ancient bloodline within the Great Houses. No matter their status though, the Volkov family has always stood as a protector to liberty and sword for the meek in their time of need. However within the past century, The Volkov family were stripped from their lofty status and their family name was dashed from the annals of Ulgo history.
This singular event was born from the misguided ambition of a single man, Zakhar "the Shamed" Volkov. Before the outbreak of the One Hundred Year or Jedi Civil War, Zakhar was discovered to have some margin of Force potential. Thus, the young man was whisked away from his own fledgling to study the Force within the hallowed halls of the Jedi Order. However, it would be within these halls that the Volkov family met their ruination.
As Zakhar studied within the halls of Jedi Order, he learned of both Light and Dark, he felt the constant conflict between the two opposite forces. Overtime, Zakhar's studies became increasingly more focused on the powers of Darkness as he slowly succumbed to the seductive whispers of the Dark Side. Thus, when the broiling tension between the students of the Light and the apostles of Darkness finally birthed war, Zakhar took up the mantle of Exile.
While this initially brought no shame to the Volkov family, as Zakhar told his family of how the Light oppressed all beings and sought to rob them of emotion, eventually a son of Volkov would shame them all. As the war spilled out from the Jedi Order's temples and into the Galaxy, Zakhar was forced to behold the horrors of both Light and Dark. From his point of view as an Exile, the Jedi butchered all who opposed them. However, Zakhar clung onto his sanity tight enough to know that the Exiles were no better, enslaving and slaughtering those deemed beneath them.
It was for that reason Zakhar fled, he did not stand up for the broken and meek, he did not attempt to right his own evils. Instead, Zakhar simply abandoned the people who were and would be crushed beneath the heels of Galactic War to their fates; without even the slightest attempt to honor his own family's codes. Zakhar returned to the Republic, wreathed in corruption and flung himself at her limited mercies.
Zakhar would find no mercies, he would find no pardons, instead the young Alderaanian man would only find punishment. Zakhar was sentenced to life in a Republic Maximum Security prison for his role against the Republic and her people. Zakhar's family, was ripped apart as his wife was sentenced to thirty years within the same prison but his children were deemed innocent and returned to the care of House Ulgo.
It would be here that the Volkov family lost everything, the children given to care of an aunt and uncle but rendered destitute. However, the folly of the Republic was in assuming Zakhar's children were entirely untouched by his own corruption. The man had trained his children in the ways of darkness and was never given the opportunity to even attempt to redeem them before his own demise. So, this unholy knowledge was secretly passed down within the Volkov family and was utilized not only to protect House Ulgo from perceived threats but to slowly compile some relevance within the Alderaanian House once more all while jealously guarding their dark secret.
"...but because of the folly of one man, they abandoned me..."
Mikhail and his twin sister, Sasha were both born into the Volkov line and to the pleasure of their patriarchal father were both sensitive to the Force. As was tradition in their family, the father began to expose his children to the dark text written by his forefather and damned them to the path of darkness. He concealed their gifts in deception, ensuring that they never played their brutal "games" around anyone outside of their family and through the closeness of their training, a force bond was born between the twins.
However, the Great Houses often built ties through marriages and so it was that Sasha's hand was given to Panliel Skindel, a rising vassal family beneath of House Organa. Slowly, the Sasha and Panliel were introduced to one another and allowed to play together in the hopes that their friendship would blossom into love for one another and it worked. As Mikhail, Sasha, and Panliel grew older Sasha and Panliel grew closer together while Mikhail was left alone.
Having lost his only companion, his only friend, and due to their unique connection, the only person who could truly understand his heart; Mikhail lost himself in suffering. He began to view Panliel, the man who had become a close friend during childhood as his enemy, a kidnapper who had stolen his sister from him. Sasha, his beloved sister as his possession and something that belonged to him.
Mikhail, confronted by this pain and rage stole his ancestor's lightsaber and moved to confront Panliel and reclaim his sister. However, Sasha sensed her brother's turmoil through their connection and through the bliss, peace, and joy she had found with Panliel sought to soothe her brother's wounded soul. She hoped that she could bring him into the same warmth she felt and perhaps, with his aid, lead their family out of the shadows.
However, when she confronted her brother with Panliel by her side, her words fell upon deaf ears. Mikhail moved to strike down his antagonist in a blind fury but as he rushed past his sister with his ligihtsaber prepared to sunder Panliel and destroy the man for his countless slights, something stopped him. A strange tightness had wrapped itself around Mikhail and it ripped him away from Panliel and backwards, towards this interruption of his justice. Enraged, Mikhail struck at the source of this telekinetic grasp, his orange blade carved through it's body and the scent of burning flesh assailed his senses.
However, it was the split second of agony Mikhail felt from his sister before their bond was shattered that brought him back to his senses. As the haze of rage and hate melted from his body, grief and anguish rushed to take it's place. Before him laid the corpse of his sister, cut in twain by his own hand due to Panliel's interference in their lives.
And so when Panliel rushed to the side of his beloved's corpse, the broken man never saw the stroke of the lightsaber that ended his life. However, Mikhail felt no sense of accomplishment over his rival, his victory had been one forged in pain, anguish, and loss. Once Panliel had been laid low, Mikhail cradled his sister's cold corpse and wept, he mourned her loss, he despised her choice in interfering in his attempt at reclaiming her, and he hated Panliel for ruining his life.
"...so I will burn everything they love and hold dear..."
Mikhail knew crimes would be uncovered, he also knew he couldn't return to any Ulgo compounds without his sister at his side, it would draw too much suspicion. Instead, the young man turned his gaze to the capital city of Aldera to find his escape off world. It was on-board a public transport that the young Mikhail found the solace of freedom into the great beyond.
However, as the transport vessel cruised further from his homeworld, Mikhail felt a tugging in the recesses of his mind. A strange calling that he had never truly been able to make out until that moment, until he was freed from all burdens, and it beckoned him to follow it into the unknown. Mikhail moved like a shadow into the cockpit of the transport, compelling both the guards and the pilots to bend to his will by dominating their feeble minds.
The guards ensured the other passengers never rebelled as the pilots set a route to where Mikhail had felt the dark power drawing him in. It was there in the reaches of Unknown Space that Mikhail abandoned the crew and passengers of the commandeered flight to their respective fates. An upon the surface he found the source of what had drawn him to the world, a group of loosely organized but militant Dark Jedi, the remnant of the Exile's grand army; they branded themselves Exiled Templars.
Despite Mikhail's attempts to remain in cover and out of sight, he was captured and brought before a commanding officer of sorts. There was no questioning what he was, the taint of the Dark Side's corruption burned in his presence and veins. The aggression written on Mikhail's face told his captors all they needed to know about the young man before them, he was clearly no Jedi.
Despite this fact, Mikhail was not accepted into their ranks straight away, no the Templars sought to break him in order to remain safe. They tortured Mikhail, questioned his motives, his beliefs, and what had brought him to them. Eventually, Mikhail broke and told them who he was, where he had come from, how he had been trained, and what he had done. After that Mikhail was put back in a holding cell for what felt like weeks until finally he was dragged from his cell and given two options; join or die.
Mikhail chose life without hesitation and was inducted into the Exiled Templars despite some measure of suspicion regarding him. Slowly, the Templars educated Mikhail on their philosophies and viewpoints on the Force. It was through their teachings that Mikhail began to understand their dream for the Galaxy and a way to bring about what he envisioned, a universe without pain, suffering, and needless loss. Because of this personal objective that Mikhail committed himself fully to the Templars purpose, he would faithfully serve and raise in power or fail and die.

Mikhail is a man defined by a single moment in his life, the death of his sister and his role in it. While Mikhail is directly responsible for her death, and while he despises himself for striking without hesitation, he refuses to accept full responsibility for his own actions. Instead, Mikhail pushes blame onto Panliel for stealing Sasha away from him and Sasha herself for interfering in his rescue of her.
In fact, this moment in his life was so defining that the continuous mental and emotional anguish the memory brings has become what fuels Mikhail's connection to the Dark Side. While Mikhail is capable of utilizing emotions such as hatred and rage in the heat of battle, it has become his guilt and suffering that he primarily utilizes to perform feats.
Due to the tragic events that the death of his sister caused, Mikhail has adopted the viewpoint that the Galaxy is inherently flawed. As such, he seeks to force change upon the galaxy in order to eliminate the chances of the same anguish that was inflicted upon him from befalling another. He understands that to accomplish this goal, he will have to take part in great atrocities to rip apart the systems of the Galaxy and rebuild it in his design.
As a Exiled Templar, Mikhail finds himself operating with more restraint then his more rampant and chaotic brethren. While he understands that inciting chaos and destruction can be powerful tools to utilize on enemies and obstacles, he does not believe that they should be first options. Instead, Mikhail's tactics are more surgical, often avoiding civilian casualties at all costs in order to paint the Exiled Jedi as reformed heroes rather then manipulative monsters.
Due to Mikhail's more ordered approach to the Exile's agenda he often finds himself at odds with some of his brothers and sisters; the Exiled Marauders and Arcanists in particular. In fact, Mikhail has taken a deep rooted hatred for the Exiled Marauders, viewing them as a blight upon not only the Exiles but the Galaxy as a whole and his antithesis. Mikhail is personally willing to kill, betray, or abandon Exiled Marauders at his earliest convenience when forced to pair with them.
While Mikhail despises the mere existence of the Exiled Marauders and their unquenchable blood-lust; he is cautious and almost fearful of the Arcanists. To Mikhail, these Arcanists represent the unpredictability of the Dark Side and are largely wild cards in his eyes. Their selfish ambition to dominate all life does not fit into his own agenda and thus makes them a potential threat.
Mikhail despises the Jedi as they not only oppressed the freedoms of others to keep themselves in a position of power but foolishly cling to dogmatic views. While Mikhail did not always hate the Jedi in this manner, his already dislike of them was stoked into pure hatred over the three years he has served within the Exiled Templars.
Despite his actions pulling him deeper into the darkness, Mikhail cannot break a faint whisper in the back of his mind. The calming voice reminding him of his sister's love for him, of the forgiveness she offered him that day, and that it is never too late to turn back from his path. This ever present tugging at his heart can cause some difficulty when communing with the Dark Side and is something Mikhail says he is actively seeking to purge from him.
