Aster Maris is the spaceborn daughter of two Ossein spacers. Her father was the Noy (captain) of a medium bulk freighter named the Starlight, Her mother a Jazaq starfighter of the same ship’s crew. Growing up traveling the stars, natural gravity was a rare experience for the young Ossein, with most of her life being shipboard.
Aster spent her teenage years as a crewmember on her father’s ship. Her first taste of spaceflight was in the cockpit of her mother’s old T-65 X-wing after stealing it for a joyride in her early teens and she was hooked ever since. She developed a strong independent streak, a desire to fly a ship of her own, not just serve on someone else’s. Giving in to their daughter’s perseverance, Aster’s mother taught her how to fly, bundled with a few moral lessons about what being a Jazaq was all about.
Aster didn’t want to be a Jazaq though. She just wanted to fly, fly and find some freedom from the presence of others for a bit. Saving up every scrap of money she could, using every opportunity at port to trade and scam for more, she eventually saved up enough to buy a ship of her own. Finally free to lead a life of her own, she said goodbye to her parents and the crew that she called family, and set off to see the stars.
