DESCRIPTION
Batil pattern starfighters are an ancient class of light combat spacecraft which dates back at least to the Hutt-Xim Conflict, and possibly before. Developed presumably by Hutt artisans, or by engineers employed by the Hutts, the Batil was the standard fighter used by Hutt armies and fleets for many thousands of years, and has never entirely been replaced, although they are seen very rarely these days beyond the depths of Hutt space.

The Batil looks as archaic as it is, with construction that appears unrefined and primitive, especially by modern standards. The type has a barrel-shaped fuselage, topped by a bubble canopy and with a pair of straight, externally braced wings sprouting from the sides. In examples built within the last 5,000 years or so, durasteel is the primary structural element, forming the fuselage frame, wing spars and some of the skin. Traditionally, the nosecone of the Batil is made of polished bronzium; this originally afforded it some protection against primitive laser weapons due to its reflective surface, but in the present day it is purely decorative. The most obvious material choice, however, and perhaps the most alarming to modern sensibilities, is the use of stressed textile on all relevant control surfaces. Although this appears flimsy and downright crude, it does save a decent amount of weight; modern-ish Batils use high-strength synthmesh, which is nearly as strong as durasteel anyway.

In terms of armament, Batils have made certain concessions to modernity over the millennia. Originally, the type was equipped with automatic projectile cannons, later updated to beam tubes, then pulse-wave cannons, then blasters and finally light laser cannons. There are 4 of these, 2 in the nose and 2 in the wings. Notably, even in the present day, Batils do not have shields, nor are they particularly fast; the earliest examples of the type used primitive chemical rocket motors for propulsion, and although modern examples have contemporary ion drives, they still top out at about 80 MGLT. Batils primarily rely on their excellent maneuverability in a fight, as well as sheer numbers; standard tactics are for large numbers of these fighters to swarm their opponents.

Notably, Batils are not equipped with hyperdrive systems, now or in the past, making them reliant on carriers and other external methods of inter-system travel. In ancient times, a common method of transport for squadrons of Batils was to trail them on lines strung from Hutt war-yachts. This allowed the type to disengage and deploy quickly upon arrival, but could be hazardous for the Batil crews; it was not apparently uncommon for trailing fighters to accidentally detach in transit and become lost forever in the extra-dimensional realm.

In general use, Batil starfighters have almost entirely been replaced by more modern types in service to the Hutts. This occurred primarily as the species transitioned from ancient Hutt Empire to the modern Kajidic system, with the vast slave armies being phased out in favor of mercenary troops, who often supplied their own equipment. It is said that the Hutts never throw anything away, however, and so it has been with the Batil; the type has persisted in Hutt service, often taking on ceremonial roles, guarding places only the must trusted slaves are allowed to see, aside from the Hutts themselves. Seeing one in person often means that one has strayed into an area where they should not be.

As with many ancient weapons, it is believed the Hutts maintain vast stockpiles of Batils as a last ditch defense for the worlds they control. As evidenced by updated weapons and materials, production also continues; some theorize that the Hutt clans maintain secret slave colonies which have been dedicated to nothing but mass-producing Batils for untold generations. Sale of Batils to outsiders is forbidden, and very few have ever left Hutt space.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Though primitive, Batil pattern starfighters are classified as combat craft under Galactic law. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities. You know, if the Hutts don't kill them first.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from Legends canon into ours site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
Batil pattern starfighters are extremely difficult to acquire by characters who are not Hutts, or who do not directly work for a Hutt. Having one otherwise would require some sort of justification, which should preferably be role-played out.
