Comet Starburn
Wizard's Apprentice
_____________________________________________________
First of all: What even is a Hedge Wizard?
Ideas of arcane magicians poring over ancient texts, speaking elaborate incantations to bend the elements to their will, crooked noses and pointed hats and long beards all come to mind. But the rather less interesting reality is that a hedge wizard is basically a glorified apothecary. There's very little special or remarkable about it, and is mostly a by-product of far-flung or remote colonies still requiring medical treatment without access to modern medicine, like bacta.
On Thakwaa, a hedge wizard is basically a travelling doctor, treating the ill with more rudimentary medicines in exchange for food, shelter, or other niceties. Hedge wizards also provide counselling and advice, and peddle some wares of their own, such as pre-prepared potions and salves and other curatives.
Some degree of mysticism can play a part - in the remote communities of the galaxy, hope is often sustained by superstition, and hedge wizards are known to use some powers of 'seeing' - though it is entirely dubious as to whether any hedge wizard truly does have any gift of foresight - in order to advise people of their futures. This is not to suggest that people don't view hedge wizards with scepticism of course. But, as long as the advice given is reasonable and wise, then the the more absurd aspects of the hedge wizard's services can be overlooked. However, an incorrect or directly harmful vision can see the wizard exiled from the community permanently. It is a risky game. Others use illusions or sleight of hand to further enhance their 'mystical arts', with the reasoning that some people will find it easier to believe in the wizard's so-called 'power' if they can see fisthand abilities that seem remarkable or even supernatural in nature.
(It should be noted that the communities we speak of here have never even seen a Force user, and knowledge of the Force in itself is limited and often spoken of as some sort of fairytale. The proselytising of the Church of the Force often leans into this narrative, which only appears to deepen skepticism for most.)
If there are any hedge wizards with any real power out there, they are as of yet completely unheard of, or hiding their powers incredibly well.

Though the galaxy is a well-connected place, with even the most remote worlds connected to galactic trade networks and hyperspace lanes, there do remain some communities far enough from spaceports, and remote enough, that technology takes a back seat to superstition. For Comet Starburn (named after a 200-year old holovid that is no longer in circulation in most of the galaxy due to its outdated format, primitive production values and problematic depiction of certain nonhuman species), this was absolutely the case. Son to a hedge wizard, Comet's early life was filled with learning locally applicable trades such as herbalism, pre-bacta medicine and sleight of hand. Though he was aware of the greater galactic community, he remained naive of how distanced he was from it, as well as the sheer scale of the galaxy, and how advanced technology was in comparison.Biography

On his 24th birthday, Comet's father Adam gave him a crystal, a family heirloom that was said to bring luck to the family. However, on touching the crystal, both father and son were somewhat confused by the fact that Comet had come down with a sudden case of spontaneous levitation.
Superstition abounded around the hedge wizard trade, but few, if any, were thought to have any real power. Adam explained to his son that the explanation to the origin s of the crystal, and Comet's mysterious new powers, could not be found on Thakwaa - to understand himself, Comet would have to take to the stars - if anyone knew how to explain the strange magics Comet now possessed, it would be on one of the more coreward worlds.
Still, Adam was not going to send his son out into the galaxy unprepared. After several months of teaching Comet how to use simple weapons such as a pistol, or a sword, they travelled to the only starport on the planet. Using his meagre savings to equip Comet in some basic clothes and equipment for his protection, Adam bid his son farewell, and Comet boarded a freighter, bound for an entirely new world in the quest to discover the nature of his powers, and the strange crystal that brought them to the surface.
