DESCRIPTION
The BYL-series sentry droid is a small security automaton manufactured by Rebaxan Columni, makers of the innocuous MSE-series maintenance droid. Inspired by tales of its own products being reprogrammed and repurposed by Rebel saboteurs during the Galactic Civil War, Rebaxan Columni created the BYL as a simple security solution for large facilities which could not be practically patrolled by organic guards or more conventional security droids. The BYL is a stout, simple machine, not much more than a head turret on wheels, best resembling an antique astromech droid from the days of the Old Republic. Features include a single multi-function sensor eye, which works as a photoreceptor, highly sensitive motion detector, hologram projector/recorder and high-power spotlight. The BYL is armed with a single medium blaster, capable of firing regular and stun bolts out to a range of 30 meters.
Standing 1.2 meters at its maximum height, the BYL can fold to reduce its profile, laying its torso flat and retracting its rear leg struts into its forward struts. Folded down, the BYL is still mobile, with all 4 of its wheels still being usable. This allows the droid to negotiate obstacles that would be difficult for other, less flexible models. In this folded configuration, the BYL can also to move at surprising speeds, able to keep pace with a sprinting human.
Of course, it is hard for most organics not to underestimate the BYL at first sight; similar to many astromechs, it is considered "cute" by many sentients. Those who have experienced the droid first hand know better; contrary to its appearance, the BYL is considered to be one of the most vicious, persistent and cunning security droids on the market. Among career criminals who have fought them - and law enforcement who have to clean up the resulting mess - BYLs have earned the nickname "Bile Droids."
Although it is relatively easy for an armed, competent intruder to defeat a single BYL, there is seldom ever just one; although it is equipped with its own autonomous databrain, BYLs are typically slaved to a remote central control computer, coordinating sometimes hundreds of droids together. This coordination allows BYLs to create highly effective and highly dangerous swarms; they effectively move as a single organism, executing extensive search patterns to locate an intruder, and ganging up on anyone they find not part of their cleared personnel database. Once roused, the entire swarm must typically be dispatched, or else diverted to allow escape.
Although there is nothing particularly legal about the BYL's hardware, its "swarm" programming makes the type restricted on certain worlds, requiring special licensing to possess more than a handful.
LEGALITY
Restricted. Due to their armament and programming, special licenses are required to possess large numbers of these droids on most civilized worlds.INTENT
To create an unassuming guard droid that characters might encounter during a heist or other criminal action, and would have to deal with in large numbers. Partly inspired by a scene from Patlabor: The Movie.
