Warning, this is going to be a haphazard mess of me brainstorming my thoughts and musing. Coherence is not going to be maintained.
Note for reviewing: I'll pretty it up once the writing itself has been given the all-clear.
Grand Army of the Republic
The mainstay and namesake of the Republic military, the Army is one of the largest military forces ever assembled in galactic history. Drawn from thousands of Republic-aligned worlds, each system is responsible for the recruitment, training and armament of its soldiers, though this is supplemented by Republic resources in the form of funding, advisers and equipment. This has created an incredibly diverse organisation with soldiers from hundreds of different species speaking as many languages. Soldiers brush shoulders with comrades from units ranging from all-volunteer formations utilising cutting-edge technology to conscripted prisoners equipped only with only the most limited gear. On the majority of worlds however, Army recruits are volunteers awarded an enlistment bounty, given several weeks of basic training, equipped accordingly and deployed to the frontlines. Furthermore, in the wake of the Battle of Coruscant, the number of recruits across most all Republic-aligned worlds has skyrocketed. Efforts to better uniform the Army continue, but with so many star-systems under Republic control there are simply too many worlds to make this a reality in such a short span of time. In systems considered at high risk of Sith invasion - or that are currently under siege - newly formed units will typically be stationed on the planet on which they were raised.
Responsible for the transportation of the Republic's armies, as well as engaging in ship-to-ship warfare, the Navy in its currently militarised formation shares a history as brief as its ground-based counterpart but among whom it counts both starships and crews of both considerable and little experience. Whilst the Galactic Republic had always maintained a sparse but functional Navy for limited peacekeeping and transportation duties, most of the Grand Army of the Republic's more experienced officers and their vessels come from defence forces raised locally by individual planets and systems, largely deployed against pirates and - depending on the planet in question - their own civil and localised wars. Considerable efforts and resources have been expended by the Republic to greatly expand and modernise its own fleets, as well as subsidise and reinforce those planets able to contribute their own starship construction and deployment. Machines and trained personnel do not appear overnight however, but as more star-systems enter a state of total war more vessels than ever before are seeing service on the frontlines of the war in space.
The Republic Marines are often seen as the 'face' of the Grand Army of the Republic. Formed to act as a quick reaction force aboard Navy vessels, the Marines are ready to be deployed to any system as needed. In contrast to the Army, the Marines are a much more uniform, better equipped and organised force, directly funded by and answerable only to the Republic rather than subsidised by any one system or planet. Most marines were drawn from the militas that comprised the defunct Border Alliance, quickly filling out their ranks with large numbers of battle-hardened veterans. Survivors from near-destroyed Army units are usually folded into the Marines to further supplement this more experienced force though raw recruits are not unheard of. Where the Army serves to take and hold ground, the Marines act as a flexible force of shock troops, usually working in tandem with Special Forces units during the initial stages of a conflict, or among the first friendly faces that a beleaguered planet's defenders see when 'the cavalry' arrive.
Organised under the Special Operations Group, the Republic's elite special forces units were born out of the realisation that the war against the Sith Brotherhood was no mere border conflict. Units and individuals able to act independently of regular military units would be required to undertake sensitive and critical assignments including infiltration, sabotage, and assassination. Only the best soldiers from within the ranks of the Army, Marines and even the Navy are invited for selection, though the current state of war has forced potential recruits to prove their worth in the field as much as in simulations and training. Those who do move on to join their elite ranks are spared no expense, their armouries supplied with technology that is both cutting edge and and in some cases black market and illegal. Ultimately however, no amount of tech can account for ones own skill and talent. Though their origins and histories are diverse, every member of the Special Operations Group can be counted as one of the galaxy's most hardened, efficient and deadly soldiers.
Note: All GAR Player Characters are all considered part of Special Forces. Only NPCs makeup the other four branches, however service in one of them (or the defunct Border Alliance) should be part of your character's recent history.

In-character and Out-of-Character ranks are not mutually exclusive. For example, an Assistant Faction Leader (AFL) may opt to play a character who is ranked as a Trooper, whilst a Member may eventually become a Commander. The only exception to this is the rank of XXXXXX, held by the AFL responsible for the GAR sub-faction (@Calixis). IC ranks are gained based on in-character merit. In turn, OOC ranks are gained based on out-of-character merit.
Trooper - The backbone of any unit will always be its enlisted men and women. When a soldier is transferred to the ranks of Special Forces they are granted the rank of Trooper, regardless of their previous position. Most Troopers were corporals or sergeants prior to their selection, however there are many exceptions, particularly as the war has drawn on. Troopers are expected to be flexible in their operational capabilities, undertaking assignments both as part of a unit, in pairs or flying solo. For this reason they are unofficially viewed as having some amount of authority over regular Republic forces, at least to a point. It is not unusual for regular units to defer to their 'expertise' during particularly grievous situations.
Squad Leader - Trained and experienced in applying small-unit tactics, those who command Special Forces units must lead their men in on unconventional and critical assignments both on and beyond the battlefields in the war against the Sith. To lead a squad into some of the most dangerous and critical of missions requires experience, knowledge on tactics, initiative and confidence both in their men and themselves.
Commander - Special Forces Commanders are responsible for the planning and direction of the Grand Army's least conventional and important operations. Often working in tandem with other branches of the military, they command great respect from most of the hierarchy and many battles have turned by actions passed down from Special Forces Commander. Whether directing several strike teams as they infiltrate and disable a Sith warship, or taking to the battlefield personally in command of a leaderless, breaking Republic regiment, their purview is broad but all honed and utilised under one simple goal: Win this war for the Republic at any cost.
