DESCRIPTION
The CF9 Crossfire starfighter is a rather unique combat spacecraft manufactured by Incom-FreiTek exclusively for the New Republic Navy. Designed to replace a collection of obsolete ships within New Republic Starfighter Command, the Crossfire nominally combines the rolls of aerospace superiority starfighter and light starbomber, with the firepower to do both at least relatively well.

The Crossfire is only distantly related to the long-serving X-Wing series, also by Incom-FreiTek, which it is partially intended to replace. Smaller than its older siblings at 10.5 meters in length, it still packs a wallop, including 4 medium laser cannons on its wings, which pivot to form a cruciform pattern, a rather novel application of the S-foil system which improves weapon spread and enhances thermal efficiency. Other weapons include a rear-facing dual laser turret for dealing with pursuers, as well as a quartet of forward-firing light blaster cannons, primarily meant for ground strafing and general anti-personnel work. Finally, there is a single proton torpedo launcher, with a capacity of 6 torpedoes.

The CF9 has a back-to-back cockpit, similar to that found in the T-47 airspeeder, among others. The pilot faces forward, controlling most of the guns and torpedoes, with the co-pilot facing backward, using the twin guns at their disposal to win the day. In the event of an emergency, the ship's entire cockpit section can separate as an escape pod, protecting the crew from harm.

Though somewhat costly and unorthodox in design, the Crossfire is able to go toe-to-toe with many other starfighters. Thought not a universal replacement for all other types in service, NRSC continues to acquire large numbers as part of their sweeping modernization program. The type has not so far been offered to other customers.
