We'll always allow "no death" threads. They have their place, just as long as they're not overused and abused. We just want to limit them more. Not through rules, but through encouragement.

This is probably going to sound like a really stupid question but I would just like a quick clarification. If my hypothetical Jedi is killed, my next character I create would be able to join any of the main factions right?
Correct, as long as you don't have any other characters in the Jedi.

I will be honest though - there's a contradiction in some people's "no death" desires that will have to be addressed. Namely, wanting to avoid danger at every turn while still having some sort of influence in the faction. If you want to have influence, you're going to have to accept risks, especially in the Sith. Say you're a high ranking Sith, and someone else wants to take your place. It would be supremely unfair to other players to have a high ranking Sith become untouchable and unkillable because they are hiding behind "no death" threads all the time.

Which is a big reason why the top ranks in the factions are going to be dependent on combat and risk taking.

Sorry Brandon I deleted my post, didn't think it was necessary.

Oh no, I'm fine with that. I was more referring to individual or personal threads that aren't related to the faction or wider timeline, for which the no-death option should be available. For threads revolving around factional matters or the galactic conflict, I fully accept why they shouldn't be death-disabled all the time. I'm alright with entering risk-oriented threads on occasion, and have done so before, it's just not something I can do often, as it is simply too stress-inducing.

That aside, I'm not looking to gain influence in my faction for a long while at least anyway. I'm looking forward to RPing low-ranking characters and just exploring with them.

For sure. Though it is still important to note that even that can be abused. Someone could get to a high rank and then just stick to their own threads, and ignore threads that are, as you described them, related to factional matters or galactic conflict. What then? What if suddenly some high ranked Sith is always in Closed threads and always hiding behind a "no death" rule? It's an edge case, but it's certainly possible, and that's why we have to encourage people to be more open and not be afraid of danger all the time. Part of that is making sure that advancement within the faction favors people who take those risks.

I think it is a matter of understanding time and place, and using things in moderation. Believe it or not, but I actually enjoy the odd PvP once in a while, as I mentioned in the other thread, and I even enjoy it more when there is some risk is present. That's the reason I enjoy having two Sith, one who is more of a scholar or artisan who doesn't fight, and another who is very battle-oriented, so I can choose depending on the situation or thread, or what I simply feel like writing. I do intend, and look forward to partaking in the galactic conflict with Andromeda, even if only on off-shoot battles ;)

Had some time to peruse the new timeline announcements, and I'm just going to throw what few comments I have about it here because of time constraints.

The timeline itself looks awesome. For lack of any lengthier comments on the matter, I like how everything is laying out. 1,000 years before the Clone Wars, or even Bane for that matter. Plenty of room for some epic stuff there. And the factions look interesting as well. I like the idea of the Knight-Crusaders for the Jedi. In addition to just plain sounding cool, giving the Jedi faction a focus more towards the combat/enforcer role and relegating the Council and all it's bureaucracy to NPC status is a wise move that should definitely help to alleviate much of the "sit and train" mentality that has plagued the Jedi so.

The Sith look promising as well, though the Sacred Band of Ziost is... a little awkward in my opinion. I would have preferred to see an established military organization rather than a loose collection of mercenary cultists. But I guess that just means there's something for all those interested in playing that side [like myself] to work towards in taking the Sacred Band from the shadow of its former self and restoring it to its full glory.

The Republic is, well... it's the Republic. Though the idea of it being essentially "segregated" between the Border Alliance who sees the oncoming Sith threat and is willing to strike out against it, and everyone else who would prefer to have their head in the sand is a nice touch that could keep things fresh and interesting.

Aside from that, my only concern is this idea of having to choose between having a Jedi or having a Sith and not being permitted to have both. I may just be missing it, but I don't exactly see how that is going to inspire any more faction loyalty when people are still permitted to switch sides. Unless this really boils down an attempt at controlling any potential conflicts of interest by allowing players to have a Jedi and a Sith character simultaneously.

For sure - it's a good goal for the Sith to have. If they just start as an empire, it's no different from what we have now and the faction has less to work towards. Plus we've deliberately limited the size and scope of all the factions, as well as the size and scope of the war. It's now much more of a regional conflict, rather than a galactic one like this timeline. Can it evolve into a bigger conflict? Absolutely, but starting out it will be smaller.

Aside from that, my only concern is this idea of having to choose between having a Jedi or having a Sith and not being permitted to have both. Well, switching sides doesn't happen on a whim. It comes through natural character progression, and is something someone would really have to work towards. So if someone switches sides, it has very likely been earned. The change in loyalty has been earned. That's a far cry from having characters in both factions and not really being all that loyal to either one.

Plus, if you have two Jedi, for example, that makes it more difficult to switch sides. If one of your Jedi turns to the dark side and the other doesn't, and you want your fallen Jedi to become a Sith, then your other Jedi either has to leave the Order for some reason or you have to archive that character. That means you really have to put a lot of thought into switching sides. Because not only will it have consequences for the factions, it will have personal consequences for you as well by having to make those tough decisions. And by making those tough decisions, your fall to the dark side becomes more important and more impactful. It shows you were willing to make a sacrifice in order to make a change to your character and change your loyalties.

The last thing you said is exactly the point. If you make a character in any main faction, it will make for better RP if you don't have any conflicts of interest such as conflicting character goals or other things. At least that's what I think.

That too, yeah. If you don't have those split loyalties then you can be more dedicated to the faction you've chosen to join. And if you do choose to fall to the dark side, or be redeemed if you're a Sith, then your change in loyalties makes sense and is fitting in-universe.

You only mentioned that we can have 2/3 characters as part of a single MAIN faction. Would we be able to have all 3 of our PCs as part of any 1 independent faction?

Also, how do independent factions play further into this, if at all?

I'm not sure if this was asked, but what if your in a main faction and an indie and that indie then allied with another main faction?

For instance, I'm planning to be in the Border Alliance I'm also joining an indie faction that is a Pirate fleet. What happens if the pirates then ally with the Sith essentially putting me on both sides.

Not sure if this has been answered, but if you are the FL of a minor faction, does that affect your ability to be in the 'big three' factions at all?

Also, I'm assuming the 'you can only run one indie at a time' rule still applies?

Naaaah, you just crushed all the newbie dreams of starting an Indie Faction.

I was a newbie once. With a dream...

Am I missing something? My question directly asked about that sort of thing and I don't have time to scour this whole thread to search for a previous answer. I'm sorry for my abrasiveness, but if possible, an answer from anyone would be appreciated (or even an stare decisis answer via quote)
