NAME: Codaeseus Birov – ‘Cod’ for short
FACTION: Independent Mandalorian
RANK: Former Shipyard Supervisor for MandalMotors
SPECIES: Mon Calamari
AGE: 39
GENDER: Male
HEIGHT: 5 feet 11 inches
WEIGHT: 178 lbs
EYES: A nice, bulbous yellow
HAIR: Hair? Don’t be silly
SKIN: Reddish Brown
CREDITS: 1,000.
DISTINGUISHING MARKS: None in particular
FORCE SENSITIVE: Thankfully, not. Or the things he’d have felt…

STRENGTH: Whilst starting to get on a bit in age, Codaeseus is still in pretty decent shape for someone his age. Not every Mandalorian is a fighter, but most of them know the value of a healthy body.
DEXTERITY: Codaeseus would never really claim to be the ‘flexible’ type, but you’d be surprised just what he can squeeze into, and how well he keeps his balance. His explanation for it would be a sort of acclimation – the best way to build a starship is in space, and in so doing you also have to make a lot of tight squeezes. Suppose it’s one of the practical skills that hasn’t slipped so much since.
CONSTITUTION: Codaeseus isn’t the sort of person who can endure the biggest beating, or take on the biggest and baddest illnesses of the galaxy with barely a flicker to his health, but he is generally healthy. Really, the most enduring thing about him is, when he gets ‘in that special place’, his dedication and interest in the work at hand can leave him working straight over 24 standard hours and feel just fine after. But that’s a bit of a rarity.
INTELLIGENCE: As both a Mandalorian and a Mon Calamari, its… not entirely surprising that Codaeseus is something of an expert at ship craft. A genius, one – like himself – might argue, able to identify and recollect a ship’s infrastructure if it’s something he’s had prior experience with, and it’s not exactly difficult for him to deduce facts about an unknown ship so long as it follows design logic with which he is familiar. And whilst ships are his true expertise, the basic qualifications required for such this day and age – physics, engineering, mathematics, so forth – make Codaeseus fairly well versed in many a field.
WISDOM: On the other hand, the application of that knowledge is another matter entirely. Yes, when it comes to ships, Codaeseus is pretty much a master, but much of that lies in the theory of design, his days of hands on work having been left behind YEARS ago. And whilst immensely capable once he gets ‘in that special place’, as he calls it, outside of it, he is a man prone to missteps and mistakes, just like any other, which can serve to more than bring him down a peg.
CHARISMA: Really, it depends on what Codaeseus is talking about. See, someone as smart as he is, is also smart enough to know when he isn’t necessarily the finest authority on a matter, and so things on say… biology, or chiss politics – those kinds of things will never be said with certainty unless he earnestly knows them to be true. But if you’re asking for the specifics on say, a Crusader-class Gunship? Don’t even try to tell him he’s wrong. He might well be, but he’ll be damned if it won’t seem a convincing mistake.

FORCE POWERS:
None whatsoever

SKILLS:
A little rusty, but Codaeseus makes a pretty decent mechanic, and is certainly a remarkable engineer in general, if able to sit and think on a design. When a plan relies on understanding a given structure, he makes for a fairly decent strategist, able to identify weakpoints and potential structural advantages. With the basic training that many Mandalorians receive, he is also capable with a blaster, but not really so much as others who normally dedicate their lives to knowing when and where to pull the trigger.

LIGHTSABER/SWORD FORMS:
Seriously?

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES:
A fairly bright thinker, and a man who understands architecture like, well, an art. So for fixing up a ship or bringing down a building with a few well-placed shots, Codaeseus is the guy to ask.
Just, don’t bring up the fact he left behind his family in running away from his job. It’s a severe sore spot that can throw him off from anywhere between a few brief moments, to days on end. Plus some time away from the handiwork means he might slip up at times...

GEAR:
  • Toolkit – His oldest belonging, with a plasma torch, wire cutter, and all sorts of other bits and bobs that he uses to make things go. Or make them go boom.
  • Taskmaster Pistol – A perk that came with several years of loyal employment with MandalMotors, its somewhat ironic that its only seen primary usage by Codaeseus since he left.
  • The clothes on his back, of course.
  • His old MandalMotors IFF scanner. Neat little thing to remind workers which ships they’re looking at and whether or not they’re working on it – though Codaeseus has less conventional uses for it since.

SHIP:
None personally, he’s the passenger type

DROIDS:
None

PETS:
None

PERSONALITY:
As a caricature, it would be pretty easy, and not entirely inaccurate, to say that Codaeseus is a grumpy old man who likes to reminisce about the old days a bit much. The kind who’ll tell you he used to do all this stuff once, so clearly, he’s still gotta be entirely capable of it now.
Well, that caricature stems more from Codaeseus’ pride more than anything else, natural born Mon Calamari stubbornness having been honed by Mandalorian clan values. When he gives himself something to do, he gets it done. If he says he can do the job, he can damn well do the job. And clan Birov was great, because it was. These are his beliefs and he will stick by them.

Well, mostly stick by them, because as we all know, things can get a bit complicated in life. Much of Codaeseus’ longing for the days of his clan’s greatness comes from the fact that those days are long gone, and likely impossible to achieve ever again – simply too few remain. And without his particular set of skills to reinforce his way of living, then what good is he? He clings to the best aspects of his past for without it, he has little to define himself, even if he must ignore the distressing or unsavoury aspects, including his own actions. The only part of his past that he regularly spits upon is the work that MandalMotors did with the Imperium in general, something he was wary of from the start. To probe any deeper than that can turn general grumpiness into genuine aggression, and potentially violence from the Mon Calamari if the wrong buttons – his family, his job, his arguable involvement in his clan’s destruction – are pushed.

Given how he defines himself, it’s not surprising that Codaeseus never really has long term plans beyond that which currently has his attention, and he has the cynical edge to cut into those with lofty dreams that seem unfounded. At the same time however, he has an honest appreciation for hard work and dedication – whatever its moral allegiances and intent – and will give fair praise where its earned. And despite his general penchant to do whatever needed for himself to survive, in personal interactions, he has fairly notable streaks of morality, again, old clan notions kicking in – and family, however related by blood or not, is a big deal. Refer back to above when in consideration, but remember: Grumpy Man or not, Codaeseus believes what he believes.

BIOGRAPHY:
Birov – the word means ‘many’. Sad that fate has seen it to now be carried as name to but a few.

Its usage beyond a numeric indicator arose in the years after the genocide on Dac, with the foundation of a clan by Mon Calamari who had been inducted into the Mandalorian culture. Offering refuge and promising prosperity to those whose home had been made a pool of poison, they took up their name as an oath to spite the Sith Empire for its crime. They would be ‘Birov’ – they would be many. They would survive and grow; restore both their population and pride as a people. And, for many of the centuries that passed after that, they did. Whilst far from fully representative of the Mon Calamari, clan Birov became a name that any son or daughter of Dac could proudly connect themselves to if they so chose. Whether on the battlefield or as parts of the industrial machine that was MandalMotors, those of Birov found glory and honour.

Codaeseus was born into a family of the latter kind, ship builders who had long brought the curious but well-honed instincts of the Mon Calamari to the architecture of Mandalorian craftsmanship. The young Codaeseus’ education and upbringing reflected this fact – rather than blaster and saber, his tools were the scanner and stylus, to measure the proper dimensions for a craft. He obtained qualifications in architecture and engineering, and set to work alongside both mother and father, before growing into and leading his own projects. He enjoyed the work and the challenges it presented, and would have been than keen to lead such a life right up to his dying days.
…Things did not go quite according to plan.

If anything can be pinned down as where things particularly went wrong, in Codaeseus’ humble opinion, it was the Mandalorians throwing in their lot with the newly resurgent Sith. The Empire – now Imperium – had been tolerable, for though in part descended from Krayt’s diabolical machinations, it was ultimately a different entity both politically and culturally. Yet a truly resurgent Sith political entity? Codaeseus didn’t need the force to have a bad feeling about that. But, Mandalore said it was to be so, so it was, and for a time, Codaeseus left the issue at that. His parents now aging into retirement, and with wife and children of his own, he had a family to feed. So, construction work on, ships were made, and then sent out to fight in the name of a join Imperium-Mandalorian alliance.

Then the Galactic Alliance fell, and things just got a whole lot worse.

The newly risen Mandalore, to later be known as Mandalore the Foolish, unravelled the united clans like a clothes maker that pulled loose three threads for every one he tried to add. Rumours of dissent turned into claimants against the title of Mandalore. Claimants became warlords, masters of their own fleets and sectors of space. And calls to battle turned into bloodshed the likes of which the Mandalorians had not seen for many an age. Clan Birov was, to put it quite simply, one of the worst hit.
The massacre was accentuated by many factors. First was that, rather than maintain a single, concentrated military force, Birov utilised its vast numbers in order to supplement and gain sway with many other Clans at once – this meant that when the Clans began to turn on each other, it was possible for them to be attacked across almost all of Mandalorian space. Second was that, by the time what remained was able to band together in order to survive, it had none of the personal holdings to support the kind of fleet and forces necessary to hold off their closest neighbours.

Then the Imperium turned on them, and Clan Birov shattered in the wake of the initial battles. Falling apart entirely, the clan scattered back across the reaches of Mandalorian space, which merely threw them into an even less favourable version of the first factor to bring about their downfall. Month by month, year on year, tallies were made of those of Clan Birov who fell in battle. Sometimes, the numbers came from the survivors. Sometimes, they came from their killers, seeking any victory to praise, whether they massacred ten thousand men, or merely ten.
Codaeseus spent every day counting them from outside the blockade that had formed around his people, gaining some understanding of what it must have felt for his ancestors when Dac was subject to genocide. In time, the realisation that some of his own ships may have killed off his clan, and that he served the Imperium that had ensured they could not escape their destruction, would finally break him.

Disregarding duties to both family and company, Codaeseus left the life he had spent the better part of two decades building up behind him, and largely disappeared off the grid. Occasionally, when desperate for funds, he would lend out his talents and services to those who needed them, noble or nefarious. He’s led criminals to MandalMotors’ supply lines, helped coordinate strikes on minor cartel hideouts, and sometimes just shown someone how to make things blow up a particular way. No motive, no goals, no allies, just survival.

And then… he came across a ship.
