Corruption Crisis

rodia_img.jpg

Joran was on the streets of Rodia, waiting around for his 2 other compatriots to arrive. This time, he hadn't been sent to the worst possible location in the galaxy, though it was far from the most luxurious. The taste in buildings some of these Rodians have, ugh. But he was not here for that. Instead, he was here to try and persuade the Rodians to join the Alliance, and bolster its growing number of planets and its manpower. It seemed he had been doing this for ages, whilst everyone else got the better jobs of rampaging through worlds like Corellia, actual civilised worlds, where the population weren't entirely barbaric scum, which Joran didn't actually see as a resource which could be used, but a waste of time and eventually funds. This thought was immediately backed up with his first mission. The law enforcement here apparently found it impossible to go without bribery and corruption, and he had to assist the Rodian government to stamp this out once and for all. Joran's thoughts were that if they couldn't protect their own population properly, how were they supposed to assist the rest of the galaxy. But no, they were apparently of some use, and so he waited around, hoping they would arrive quickly enough. He didn't want to have to charge into Rodia alone and face these corrupt cops all by himself.

Jake walked through the streets appearing as no real threat. His pistol was tucked away and the vibro knife was all so concealed and no one could really see a force user. Still he walked with confidance. This planet was far from the worst Jake had been to.

Though the task of routing out corrupt cops did mean all was not well. Though what planet origination was with out trouble.

Reaching the agreed meeting point Jake looked around. Using the force to sense his surrounding before moving in. The street was not busy still Jake could feel the life in the city. Luckily it was not hard to spot the other member of the Galactic alliance.

Moving up Jake raised a hand in greeting and got closer. "Hi there the name is Jake, I assume we here to meet up? Is there not meant to be a third person?"

Diplomacy. It was the second diplomatic mission Dalo had been sent on, though this one was certainly more high profile. It was one thing to negotiate with smugglers on Attahox and another to speak with the law enforcers of Rodia. Well, hopefully. He'd never spoken to someone that lawfully did things, corrupt or not, and he prayed to the Force that these people were not like Gio. Criminals weren't hard to strike deals with—if you know what they want—but they were extravagant. Dalo didn't want to see some exotic pet or never-before-seen weapon. He just wanted to get home and take a shower.

He walked down the street in brown robes, hood on his shoulders, arms hanging in his pockets. His lightsaber was clipped to his belt, blaster right underneath his armpit in a holster, and armor underneath the cloak. As always, the Jedi was underarmed, though he'd never seen reason to bring a rifle when he had a lightsaber. Even the blaster pistol could be considered overdoing things from some perspectives, but it was certainly an essential. Not that they would be needed today, on a diplomatic mission. Still, it never hurt.

The Padawan could overhear voices from an alley, and felt the somewhat familiar Force presence of his partners standing around. They'd hung out on the same small refueling station above Rodia, though did not interact much then. Still, Dalo had taken note of them for this occasion. It would be hard to recognize them otherwise.

Approaching, he spoke out from behind Jake, walking up the duo with his hands still in his pockets, his stride casual. "There is meant to be," he replied. "Though said person perhaps enjoys their sleep and was slower to rise today." It was true. He'd overslept, but he was only a few seconds late.

Joran first watched Jake walk towards him, and he began thinking. He had seen this person before. In fact, he had been with him in a mission before, but couldn't place where he had been with him. It would come to him sooner or later, and if it didn't he would ask him at the end. But at the moment, he just gave a nod to Jake as he approached. Jake began talking about the third person which was supposed to come to him, and he was about to respond, however the man appeared right after, talking about how people liked to sleep. Which to be honest, he would rather do himself unless there was a fancy piece of technology to study. Now however, there was no time to rest, and so he merely said
"Good enough." and began to go through the mission
"Right, there have been reports of severe cases of police corruption, brutality and overextensions of power. Now the Government has called us in to respond to this. Our orders are to head to the HQ of the police, and demand an end to this from the Police Commissioner. Diplomacy is really wanted here, we don't want to have to massacre the police forces here. Otherwise it'll just invite every gang on Rodia to swarm in. If we are attacked, try and not kill them. However, your own safety is to be quite honest, a little more important. If you are about to be killed, don't be afraid to fire ten shots into them. Any questions?"

It was a simply enough mission. Go talk to the local big shot cop and stop him being a corrupt thieve. Though it would not be so easy.

There third member to this party was all so here and brought up sleep, some thing Jake would love to be doing to. Who did not like sleeping.

"understood, try not to have this become a fight, if there is a fight try to not kill people but rule one don't die. Seems easy enough though how do you plan on convincing the cops to stop being corrupt thieves and bullies. They will loose a lot of money and sense of power."

Though Jake was young he grew up with in a system that operated a lot like these cops and did not see how a simple talk could change there mind. Though with the force as ones freind anything could be achieved.

The trio set off, walking down the street as a group, though they were doing a pretty good job at blending in, cloaks aside. Dalo glanced around at the Rodian passerbys, their bulky eyes staring them down occasionally, not paying much attention to the group of robed individuals heading down the road. It was clear no one wanted to mess with them, and the Padawan didn't blame them. The average Galactic citizen could hardly discern the difference between Jedi and Sith, and these xenos were likely assuming the Empire had finally come knocking to absorb them too.

Dalo tried to shoot them reassuring looks as they glared at him, though all he managed to do was confuse them. Shrugging it off, he turned and entered the police station first, heading to the front desk and looking at the lady behind it. A protocol droid came to assist them, since none of the Jedi actually spoke Rodian. Dalo turned and spoke to the droid first, who then turned and translated to the lady.

"«These gentlemen are here representing the Galactic Alliance,»" it drawled on in the local language. "«They are requesting an audience with the Commissioner, to discuss some confidential matters.»" Finished, the droid leaned back and awaited a response so that he may translate. Instead, the lady just batted her eyelashes and picked up the phone on her desk. After a short conversation in Rodian, she lifted her right arm over the counter and motioned to the arm chairs behind the Jedi. Great. They would have to wait like it was a doctor's appointment.

The droid followed them to their seats, though it simply stood there. Dalo wasn't sure whether to make conversation with it, especially since it was staring at him so expectantly. He raked his brain for topics to discuss with a protocol droid, but came short, and instead turned to his companions. "At least they gave us a droid to translate for us," he remarked.

Joran nodded at the droid and walked over to the seats which the droid had pointed out. Now, he'd never really done this before, waited in a police station for something. Usually, he would call the police and they would come to him, lightsabers or guns drawn and start blasting at the nearest possible things. But hey ho, you do something new every day. The wait however was definitely protracted. Longer than anything else which they had waited at a police station for and not been behind bars. Suddenly a scream came from the outside of the station, and he instinctively grabbed his weapons. He told the droid to
"Wait for a few minutes for them." and gestured for the 2 companions he had to follow him. Dashing outside, he saw 2 officers hold a woman, beating her with batons. He raised his weapon and shouted
"Officers, hold this senseless beating", and hoped his companions were doing the same thing.

The police station seemed clean enough but there where signs something was wrong. Being to to wait was fine, some worlds where busy and full of crime. The problem was that no one was waiting with them at a police HQ. Where people to scared to go to the police for help, did they know they would not bother to help or was it a mix brutality and corruption. Jake assumed it was the last.

Jake followed Joran as he rushed out side. The two cops towering over their prey. No one moved to aid her, no one would and when they did it would get vilonet. Jake all so knew these types of cops, they where no difrent to those on imperial worlds and would not stop at simply being asked nicely, no mater the firmness of the tone.

Jake moved fast, fast than most eyes could track as he channeled the force. Next second he stood before the cops and there prey as the two batons slammed in to him. But Jake was able to block them some what with his arms as they impacted with his forarm braces. The cops seemed taken by surprise that some would defy them like this, even so Jake knew the mission meant to hope fully hurt no one. They would be hypocrites if they used force and vilonce with fear and threats to stop the police.

"Gentlemen, please wait!" the droid called out after them, but the trio had already walked out. Dalo spotted the two officers, and it seemed Jake was thinking the same thing. The only difference, however, was the other Padawan's reluctance toward broadcasting their status as Jedi. Dalo reached out, extending his right arm forward, and wrapped the Force around the baton of one of the officers, which had hit Jake's gauntlet. The Padawan tore the weapon out of the man's grip, then slammed it into the other baton hard enough to disarm the second enforcer. Noting a crowd had gathered, he nodded to a few fearful Rodians, then murmured something to the protocol droid, who had just exited the police station.

"«These gentlemen are Jedi,»" it said in Rodian, earning a gasp from the crowd, some recoiling in fear. "«They are here to address the corruption problem and force the Rodian police force to purge itself,»" it added, and the people seemed to feel more at ease now. The officers, who had previously been standing around, were suddenly met with leering and shouting from the crowd, who discovered that they had no more reason to fear the police. They left their batons there and ran into the building, likely somewhere to inform their superior of what had happened. As more and more Rodians gathered, they grew increasingly more agitated. The secretary stepped outside to inform the Jedi that their audience with the commissioner would begin shortly, then quickly walked back in when someone threw a rock at her, missing her head but cracking the glass of the police station's lobby. As the Jedi stepped in, the Rodians pressed up against the glass and started banging on it with their fists. Several officers tried to step outside and calm them, only to be met with violence. As Dalo entered the elevator, he spotted the enforcers barricading the door of the police station.

It would be an interesting audience, surely. The growing riot was a good bargaining chip, and would force the commissioner in either making a strong decision, or facing days, if not weeks, of protesting. As the elevator doors opened into his penthouse office at the top of the police station, Dalo noted the man was sitting with his back turned to them, staring out the glass floor-to-ceiling windows, his gaze set on the Rodians outside. He turned in his seat, a man of no more than 50 years, a few wrinkles adorning his green face, a mean look hard set as his expression. His eyes were blue and bulbous, and fixed to the Jedi, the commissioner glaring at them before they even stepped out of the elevator. His office was a normal office, with filing cabinets and the like, as well as a trophy case in the corner of the room, and various awards adorning the walls.

Without even asking them to take a seat, he launched into an angry rant, though he seemed to be stuttering, not that Dalo spoke Rodian. After he was done, the droid translated. "The commissioner would like to know why you did that." The Jedi furrowed his brows. "Did what?" he asked innocently. After translating, the droid told them what the commissioner had replied. "He is accusing you of having started the riots outside." Dalo said something to the protocol droid, who then turned to the commissioner and translated.

"«The Jedi stated that the riots are merely a result of years of suffering caused by the police force, ignited by an act that showed the people that they have nothing to fear. Now, you have to choose between listening to their complaints or facing protests, or a possible revolution.»" The commissioner scoffed, though he looked much more worried than he let on. Dalo let his companions speak now, instead opting to look at the several trinkets adorning the man's desk.

Joran watched with... Perhaps bemusement as his 2 Jedi friends raced forward and intervened. Jake decided to become the new Great Rodian Wall, as he deflected the impact of the 2 strikes from the officers. He thought that Jake would be knocked to the ground, but to his credit, he remained on his feet. The other Jedi began to use the Force to take the batons out of the officers' hands. He admired the skill which he used, and wished that he could have powers like that without intervening in the whole religion of the Force. However, when he looked around, he saw a crowd begin to gather, and begin to spread their discontent with the actions of the police. The droid telling everyone who they were, especially the fact that 2 of them were Jedi, really didn't help either. Despite their struggles, Joran and the others were not sent to incite a rebellion, despite the fact they were Rebels. This was a neutral world, and they were not to interfere with the internal attitudes of the public or help bring down law enforcement. Otherwise, they were just dictators, no different than the Empire. And so when they reached the elevator, he said
"Try not to incite a riot the next time will you?" He said with a little exasperation. As they went down, he grew quite fearful of what the reception was going to be. Screwed probably. Completely and utterly screwed. However, Dalo decided to explain why the Jedi had acted first, which had given Joran a little reprieve. When she stopped, he spoke up
"The Rodian police has quite clearly been brutalising the people, attacking the people. Why? What's the point? What do you gain for this?"

Jake was glad Dalo had stepped in when he did since the cops where regaining there composure and would probably have attacked again. Though disarmed and with a angry crowd growing around them thought better of it. Still a angry crowd as bad and the thrown rock was worse. They did not have long till a riot started and would need to move fast.

Jake was shocked the world had not had a revolt yet. it was only a mater of time so to Jake they did nothing wrong. "Simply put we have not done any thing that would not of happed. It was only a mater of time till some one in the police force did some thing stupid and then for it to get nasty. We are not here to tell you hat to do but i can tell you what will happen if you do not listen to use very carefully." Jake stopped and looked out the window. He had joined to rescue the people of the Sith empire from their oppression. He would be a hypocrite not to help these people. "When injustice becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. Do you under stand that saying. We can stop this gathering of people that feel unjustly treated. But we will not lie, so we will talk and while you must not make us happy but the people of your world, the people you where sworn to protect and defend the people you have let down"

Jake knew it was harsh, so what this man need to hear the truth and the truth hurt.

The commissioner listened in angry silence as the Jedi spoke, rubbing his temples with his hands, elbows set down on the desk. He sighed, and when he stood back up, he seemed to have aged 10 years. Dalo looked at the man, gauging his feelings, just gently taking a peek at what was going on through the Rodian's head. All he could discern were emotions, and he was surprised to see that beneath the wrath, the commissioner was panicking. He knew something like this would happen eventually, but arrogance and greed prevented him from taking the necessary precautions to stop it—or to stop the corruption completely. He was the worst apple out of them, and harvest time was nigh.

"Tir hah ch'at ch'a bunch bah rebels ch'at tsabevah csenatu'ib," he murmured in Rodese, his eyes set down, staring at his desk. The robot began to translate, but he waved it away. Then, the commissioner stood up straight, looking at them with what seemed to be exasperation. When he spoke, his tone was certainly exasperated. Raising his hands, he replied to them in basic, his accent heavy. "End so what do yew want me to deweeng?" he asked, struggling to speak the universal language. "Canceleeng eet all? Putteeng een jail all mai men?" He was damn near pleading, but Dalo maintainted his composure.

"Yes," came the simple reply from the Padawan, who looked on the man with a neutral face, not a hint of pity in his voice or expression. He had no empathy for corrupt cops. They reminded him of Sith, greedy and opportunistic. The Jedi watched the Rodian have an inner debate before he blinked and glanced directly at him. "Leeaveeng me be. Ai weell see what Ai can deweengs." He waved them away with one hand, resting his face in the other, and the three Jedi stepped out of the room. An officer was there to escort them out, and they followed until they reached the lobby. The intercom came on, a few speakers broadcasting the announcement outside as well. The commissioner's voice spoke in Rodese, and when he finished, the protesters outside cheered, their angry chants turning to happiness.

The protocol droid translated for the Jedi. "The commissioner has just announced his immediate resignation, as well as a complete purge of any officer in the police force known to be corrupt."

Joran nodded at the Comissioner's response to their pressure which they had ladled on him. Good. It was an easy mission then. No real threat, and peace and prosperity to the people of Rodia. Whether the Comissioner was going to get a very peaceful retirement or not was to be questioned. Knowing these types of worlds, he probably was going to be murdered horribly. Lynched perhaps. But that was not their concern. When they reached the lobby, the announcement was made and cheers rose. A few seconds later, the droid spoke to him.
"You're needed by senior police officials. Some final talks" it said
"Very good. Lead the way" he said, and gesturing to the others, he followed the droid down. They came to a very empty corridor, and when a door was opened, he entered. It was then he realised that it was a trap. 2 gang members set upon him, grabbing Joran's arms and throwing him across a table. Great. They would die in an interrogation room. Outside, 2 officers each came from both ends of the corridor with batons, and began attacking his 2 companions.

It seemed easy, to easy. No way a corrupt force like this would take having there power striped with out a fight but for now Jake had to go with it. All they could do is sit and wait for some thing to happen. At least the droids message was able to calm the crowd down. The loss of life from a city wide riot would of been high.

When the droid lend them away Jake felt uneasy and patted his blaster though he hopped it was really just more talks. The sudden attack on Joran caught Jake off guard but with surprise blown Jake spotted the other four attackers and got ready. Jake was not has kind any more, they had made a deal and know it was to be broken. If there was to be violence Jake agreed to try and not kill people but with these odds it would be hard.

"Fighting now will not save you" Though Jake knew this was probably revenge more than any thing. Drawing his blaster Jake fired of three rapid shots aimed low. Killing was still to be avoided but when 6 bolts left the quick draw pistol Jake watched as the two cops all though by now they wheres thugs stop. One was hit in the leg and fell down in pain and the other stepped back shocked by the sudden and furry of Jakes barrage of fire. "We are not here to fight but if we must fight we will finish the fight. go home or you will be hurt"

"Final talks" sounded fishy enough, but as they were lead down a dim corridor in the bowels of the station, it wasn't hard to realize what would happen next. Dalo had the hilt of his lightsaber in his hand as they stopped outside the door. "Mister Claxus, I suppose there is hardly any need for wea—" The door swung open, and the droid began bumbling as two officers grabbed hold of Joran, throwing him over a table. "Oh! Oh, dear, my apologies, sirs! I had no idea this would happ—" As the two new challengers appeared, running in from opposite directions of the hallway, Dalo's already-ignited lightsaber raised to meet the baton of the one nearest to him, a green Rodian who'd come up from behind. The cop swung his baton down, but found that the Jedi would not go out so easily. Dalo parried and ducked to the right, slashing his lightsaber at the man's right thigh. It bit in, cutting until the halfway point, sending the Rodian crumpling down, howling in pain. That would likely need to be amputated if he didn't get any medical attention soon.

The two officers on the hallway dealt with (Jake had downed the other), Dalo rushed into the room, where one of the cops had stopped to listen to the other Padawan. Ignoring him, and focusing on the other—who was in the process of lifting his baton up to hit Joran—he raised his foot and slammed his heel into the man's right knee from the side, inverting it. He fell, dropping his baton and struggling to find something to grab a hold of to prevent himself from collapsing. The man was a fighter though, and pulled out a stun blaster from a holster, getting a shot off before Dalo stepped in and sliced the barrel of the gun in half. The bolt hit him in the upper left arm, dissipating against his armor but bleeding through, making it feel numb. He shook it around a bit to get the blood flowing, and slammed his fist into the Rodian's face with Force-augmented speed, the man's jaw breaking from the power of the attack. His enemy unconscious, Dalo reached a hand to Joran and offered to help him up.

"Aggressive che do jedai!" the Rodian shouted at Jake, his hands in fists at his side. He reached to the holster of his gun and pulled out a blaster pistol, though this one did not seem to be set to stun. Dalo recognized the language, though he didn't understand it—Huttese, the universal language of mercenaries and other criminals. This was no cop. The Padawan was focused on helping his fallen companion, so it was up to Jake how he would deal with the Rodian.

As Joran groaned from the pain of being lobbed across the table, the pain meant that he had a little trouble seeing, but from the noises, it seemed like his 2 Jedi friends were doing just fine against the enemy. Why didn't he ensure it wasn't a trap. Just why. However, the blunder would not result in too many casualties it seemed as one of the Jedi began helping him up. He got Dalo's hand and allowed himself to be helped up, when he saw a Rodian take out a blaster pistol. His eyes widened and shouted
"Behind you Jalo!", attempting to warn him about the person trying to attack from behind

Jake heard the cry of alarm and spotted the cop drawing his blaster. With clear intent of lethal force Jake responded in kind and fired. Since Jake had his blaster all ready drawn he was able to get the drop on the cop and two blaster bolts hit him in the chest right after one another. The Rodian fell back with a thud.

Looking around to see if there where any more Rodian willing to still fight Jake reloaded his blaster. "I did not expect the cops to accept the deal but attacking us seems rather foolish. We should be on the look out, desperate people are prone to do stupid things." Jake could only hope that no one decided to do some thing that would start a riot. The loose of life from that could be high.

Well, that was that. The opposition quelled, Dalo nodded to Jake, then lead the way out of the room, almost smacking into the protocol droid, who had chosen that moment to try and enter. "Oh! My apologies!" he stuttered out before stepping back. "I was not expecting to be leading you to an ambush. Allow me to make it up by showing you to the exit." Looking at the Jedi to see if anyone followed him, the droid began walking, making his way to the exit as fast as his jerky droid legs could carry him. Dalo followed, hopefully trailed by Jake and Joran. He was growing tired of putting up with the Rodian police force's shit. If anyone else chose to accost them, they would find some very un-Jedi-like opposition.

They reached the lobby with no further problems, though everyone they passed gave them a look, whether it was of rage or something more neutral. As they reached for the door, a police officer stopped them, grabbing Dalo's arm before he could open it. The Jedi's free hand instinctively flew up to defend himself, but the man made no further movement. Instead, he launched into a long rant in Rodese, his bulbous eyes grateful. The droid translated word for word, so that the Jedi were able to hear exactly what the man had to say.

"«They had me pinned down. I started as a rookie a year ago, fresh out of the academy, and they preyed on me. They threatened to take my wife and my children if I didn't comply and did what they said, and because of you, I'm finally free. I don't need to put innocent men in jail or commit crimes anymore. I'm finally safe.»" The man burst into tears and fell into an awkward bear hug, trapping Dalo, who seemed uncomfortable with the display of affection but tried not to show it. "Tell him it's okay," he ordered the droid. "It's our job."

Once extracted from the hug, Dalo would finally exit. If the other two men were done, they would walk back to the ship together, their mission complete.

Joran watched the final police officer which had attacked them fall with a thud, and the sight managed to bring him some satisfaction. Opposition crushed. Done. However, there was something niggling him at the back of his head. The head of police here. Gang members running rampant, used almost as a secret police. They would have to find out the answers from somewhere, and he was probably the best bet of answering their questions. However, he hadn't been planning of running through with his idea until a police officer came up and attacked them. Now the pathetic assault was dealt with quickly and decisively, he decided this was how they would find him. Kneeling next to him, as they broke up from their hug, he would ask
"Do you know where the Commisioner is?" He asked
Looking up, the officer nodded sadly, still recovering from his tears
"Could you show us where he is? As a way of thanking us even more."
Nodding, the officer stood up and made his way to the lift. Joran gestured for his 2 companions to follow him once more down below.
The officer made his way through the hallways to the office of the Commisioner
"Stand back, draw your weapons." He ordered to the officer and the 2 Jedi. Trying to open it, he found it locked. He gestured to one of the Jedi
"Break through"

Jake was sad that the need for force had arrived but there attackers had brought it on to them selfs. The droid though seemed as angry as a protocall droid could be. It Shuffled along to the exit where cops stared at them before one grabbed Dalo. Jake drew his blaster but quickly lowered it once it seemed more like friendly hug than another attack.

Dalo seemed ready to leave But Joran seemed like finishing the fight. A wise move since there was no telling what the ex head of the police could get up to. if not stopped now.

As Joran moved to open Jake reminded them all who they where "We not cold bloody killers. We should not kill any one unless forced to." The door was locked it seemed a great time for some with a lightsaber. Pity Jake even though he was a jedi did not have one. "Think he is talking to you Dalo. Maybe you know, you can cut the door down"
