Cotan Sar'andor

latest

A Warrior-Marshal of the Paladins of Mortis, Cotan Sar'andor has been a devoted servant of the Paladins and of the Force for decades. Previously having served in the last war against the Blackguard when first a squire, and then a full Knight, his actions during that time won him regard, although amongst some of the older and more conservative nobles, his refusal to take the mantle of Grand Master for himself was a mark of shame, rather than humility. However, his service has still been greatly noted through the years, with his rightfully-earned advancement to that of Warrior-Marshal, also earning himself the societal place of Lord Sar'andor.

Though he is still strong of body, Cotan Sar'andor's growing age is obviously evident in his featurers. His face is lined and wrinkled, showing how it has weathered the deterioration of years of service in battle. His hair has long since grown white, and every year he finds he has less of it remaining on his head. His eyes are still as bright and perceptive as ever, however, the one part of him that still seems moderately youthful as his age continues to advance.

Physical
[/beebox3]

Devoted to the ideals of warriorship within the Paladins, Cotan's body has been hardened through years of training and service both, remaining healthy and powerful even in old age. His strength and dexterity are nothing to scoff at, with Cotan still able to hold his own against men half his age and younger; he has the strength to batter down a wall, if necessary, or to move comfortably while ensconced in his armour, and he has the dexterity to accurately guide his blade in any battle. However, even with the sustaining capabilities of the Force, his constitution is suffering as he gets older, as he finds that he doesn't have the endurance of a younger man, compared to his strength, speed, and flexibility.

[beebox3=75%]
Mental
[/beebox3]

Cotan is an intelligent man, who is well-read in all that the Mortisite's libraries had to offer him; owing to his martial bent, much of that knowledge is in the realm of battle, though not all. He is also a wise scholar of the Paladin's ways, well schooled in his beliefs and with the understanding of all of it and how it relates to the wider Force to match. He is moderately charismatic, in the sense that he neither draws people to him nor drives them away...and those who know him best are more likely to find his actions and speeches rousing than those who don't know him at all.

[beebox3=100%]Personality[/beebox3]

First and foremost, Cotan is a task-oriented man, a trait that served him well in the last war the Paladins found themselves in; he has little patience for anything he views as a waste of time, and indeed for those actions and people he sees as wasting his time. Since the Mortisites had to return to the larger galaxy, he has been at the forefront of their movements to try and find a new home, as well as one of their staunchest protectors. His view of his role is not that of a man who lords himself over others or should command them, but as a guardian of everybody around him, and he conducts himself as such - unlike some other Paladins or Lords, he is neither haughty nor arrogant, but is a humble man who tries to remain in touch with the commoners and all others beneath him.

His demeanour towards most of those who serve under him - or who are even simply younger than him, even if they are at the same station or higher - is fatherly, although still possessing of all the stern seriousness that underlies most of his actions and interactions. He is also outspoken, entirely willing to voice his opinion to his superiors if he feels it necessary, regardless of whether or not they ask for it; as well, he does not (nor has he ever) feel any trepidation towards cowing the nobility of the Mortisites, given that he knows full well just how conniving and duplicitous they can be, even if at heart he still thinks most of them are good people; while this earned him ire as a younger Knight, now that he is both a Warrior-Marshal and counted as a Lord amongst them he garners respect, rather than anger.

The Force
[/beebox3]

While he is sensitive to the Force, Cotan's training with it has never gone beyond ensuring he had a masterful grasp of the core basics. Using the Force, he can augment his reflexes, strength, and speed to levels beyond that of any base human, and can also rely on it to supplement some of his decreasing physical endurance; his senses are advanced, he rarely needs to ever fully sleep, simple meditation sufficing; his offensive abilities are entirely limited to telekinetics, able to lift and throw large objects (or people), as well as pushing and yanking his enemies about with an invisible, and yet all-too-tangible manifestation of his will.

The Lightsaber
[/beebox3]

Given his prominent service on the front lines of the last conflict against the Blackguard, Cotan saw fit to cultivate his skills most with what he feels are the most perfectly offensive and perfectly defensive forms, those being Makashi and Soresu. Makashi's elegant approach to combat, as well as its focus on blade vs. blade, Forceful vs. Forceful, appealed to him greatly as a squire, as did the almost impenetrable defense of Soresu. He focused on training in the both of them, supplemented by his master where it was possible; now, in his advancing age, he is one of the Paladins' premier masters of both forms, having devoted his entire life to their study.

Cotan is also skilled in more basic, non-Force reliant sword combat, receiving training in the useage of a longsword after he received his songsteel weapon; he often blends this, somewhat, into his lightsaber combat as well. He is an able pilot, although he generally prefers being on the ground over being in a ship, and he has wholly given up on ever being an able user of computers, although he gets by passably well on his datapad - in general, he thinks that technology isn't really his thing. In his youth, he was considered to be a smooth talker with women...and in his older age, he still is, although he rarely has the free time to practice that skill.

[beebox3=100%]Inventory[/beebox3]

Fitting his role as a warrior-monk of sorts in the Paladins of Mortis, Cotan has few worldly possessions. He has a simple set of heavy armour, moderately similar to the CCT armour worn by many Mandalorians in functionality, though without any semblance of a HUD and looking far different; he has a songsteel vibro-longsword, first given to him when he was Knighted, and that he used to great effect in the war against the Blackguard; he has his clothes and robes, as well as a few sets of finery for when they are needed. He also has a functional datapad, which is one of the few articles of technology he is good at using.

His prized possession, however, is his lightsaber, granted to him when he reached the rank of Marshal; this weapon was the weapon of his former master, who had been a well-respected Warrior-Marshal in his own right until his death in the war against the Blackguard. Its design is somewhat different from the crossguard sabers used by the rest of the order, with only a single quillon at 45 degrees off from the main blade, and a curved hilt; the emitter casing, in a secret modification done years ago that Cotan only recently noticed, is made of songsteel itself, giving a lightsaber-resistant construction and allowing the quillon to actually be used as such. While it is somewhat different from the lightsabers common to the rest of the Paladins, it is, however, perfectly suited to Cotan's useage.

[beebox3=100%]Biography[/beebox3]

Born as a commoner among the Mortisites, some of Cotan's earliest memories were of helping his family on their farm; the noble who owned the land they lived on was a strict, but kindly man, who got along well with his servants, and generally always treated Cotan well - when he noticed the first stirrings of Cotan's Force Sensitivity, then, he immediately contacted the Paladins, informing them of the boy. They quickly came, and Cotan's family willingly surrendered him to the Paladins, who began training him as a warrior of the Force, the Knight he was squired to being a master of the blade first and foremost. In fact, it didn't take Cotan long at all to grasp the basics of being a Paladin, nor to go and study the writings on his own to better understand the order's views (or formulate his own).

In due time, his period as a squire was completed, Cotan taking on the arms and armour of a full knight of the Paladins, being granted a songsteel vibro-longsword for his use. His master, meanwhile, having already trained numerous squires to Knighthood, was advanced to the rank of Marshal, receiving the same lightsaber that Cotan uses now. After that point, Cotan took to his duties as a Knight, which normally involved settling the squabbles between some of the Lords of the Mortisites; during this time, he gained his reputation for taking a very no-nonsense attitude towards the nobility, though (as a Knight) he was granted only the title of Knight and the social rank of a Baronetcy.

In his later years of being a Knight - after having never taken a Squire, considering himself not much of a teacher - Cotan was presented with a different way in which to prove his worth to the Paladins, when the Blackguard rose again. While he did not entirely villify the Son - unlike the other members of the modern Paladins - he also knew that the Blackguard was a threat that couldn't be allowed to stand, so he placed himself at the forefront of the actions against them. While overall the war went badly, Cotan was one of the leaders of the Knights to be met with success, including the reclamation of his home planet from the Blackguard - after the original Lord of the area died, his son, who was secretly a member of the Blackguard cult, took control of the planet, and was one of many to openly declare their allegiance when the Blackguard's resurgence was full. Cotan had been one of the ground leaders of the conflict, personally directing the Paladins to victory against the rogue Lord's forces and executing the man himself.

Not long afterwards, shortly before the Battle of Nihir, Cotan executed a daring personal raid into the heart of Blackguard territory, reclaiming a valuable cache of kyber crystals and fully-constructed lightsabers that had been taken by the Blackguard; it was an action that earned him renown amongst the remaining Lords and Paladins both, as he had managed to do so before the Blackguard had any opportunity to corrupt the crystals or the weapons to their purposes, and it ensured that future members of the Paladins would be able to carry the highest symbol of rank in their order. He participated at the Battle of Nihir after that, losing his former master during the battle; upon seeing the man cut down Cotan retrieved his lightsaber, using it in the remainder of the ground battle against the Blackguard, and coming to learn of the hidden modification to the emitter structure when it narrowly saved his life after a poor parry.

After the battle was won - and in recognition for his contributions during the war - Cotan was elevated to the rank of Warrior-Marshal of the Paladins; the few remaining Lords also recognized him, conferring upon him the title that had belonged to the man in control of his home planet, making him Lord Sar'andor amongst them and garnering him newfound respect in their eyes. Some few of them wished for him to take on the position of Grand Master, owing to his experience, but he refused as a mark of humility - as he would put it, "The position of Grand Master is not one for a simple warrior such as myself." Instead, he served the woman who took on the position faithfully, in the goal of finding a new home for the Paladins and what few of the Mortisites survived the fighting.
