DESCRIPTION
The Cronese Battlebird is a pattern of warship which was first developed in the Tion Cluster by starshipwrights of the ancient Kingdom of Cron. Possibly the oldest combat spacecraft still in regular use, even longer than the venerable Sphyrna-class corvette, these sturdy, crescent-shaped vessels - classified as corvettes under the modern Anaxes War College system - have served in Outer Rim navies since before the time of Xim, and were once considered among the mightiest warships in space, although this renown was long ago.

In ages past, Battlebirds appeared much different than most do in the present. Equipped with primitive beam-tube artillery, driven by blazing fuel slug rockets and festooned with spaced armor segments of glittering kiirium, they served as skirmishers for ancient battle-fleets, using tactics which would be recognized by any modern-day starfighter pilot, albeit on a much larger scale. In millennia since, the details have been updated - lasers and proton torpedoes replacing archaic beam-tubes, durasteel and ion drives replacing kiirium and fuel slugs - but the basic hull shape has remained unchanged.

In the present day, Cronese Battlebirds are typically fitted with a single fixed heavy turbolaser situated above the bridge, with a pair of fixed heavy laser cannons situated in the lower mandible. The vessel has a vertical layout, and has two large docking ports, one on each side. The ship has a long-range scanner rectenna in a dorsal mount, plus a long-range comm system. It has a crew of 30, plus 10 passengers, with additional space for 500 tons of cargo and 2 months worth of consumables.

Even modernized Cronese Battlebirds are considered highly obsolete by modern standards, retaining their fixed armament layout which gives them only limited flexibility in combat. This being said, the frontal firepower of a Battlebird is still impressive for a craft its size, and its maneuverability is actually quite good by corvette standards, allowing it to get the drop on unwary or doubting opponents.

Though still in use, Cronese Battlebirds are rightly regarded as antiques by most of the Galaxy. They are most commonly seen in the Cronese Mandate and other parts of the Tion Cluster, where they are still used by various Sector and System navies, primarily as low-priority patrol ships.
