Crossguard Lightsabers

Stupid question (maybe?) What would be the motivation behind a Jedi's decision to craft a crossguard lightsaber and do you think the schematics will be too complicated as a Padawan's first lightsaber?

According to canon, the reason Kylo Ren's lightsaber is a crossguard is because he made a mistake in building his lightsabers and the "crossguads" are exhaust ports to help prevent it from overloading or something like that.

Currently on the Site, at least on the Sith side. The Crossguard Lightsabers are the signature weapon of the Sith Priesthood. Though that might change after the Time Skip.

As Taz said we have a different canon for the Crossguard Saber, they are the weapon of office of the Templar position among the Sith Priesthood.

According to canon (specifically the Darth Maul comics), the crossguard lightsaber was widely used by the Jedi Order (two pages show a massive Jedi Army using nothing but crossguard lightsabers). As far as our site is concerned, on the Sith side, they are used by the Sith Templars.
