Overview
The purpose of this workshop is primarily to help organize and guide me on my path to building a new canon based off of my old canon. It will also be a fun way for me to compare the two and see how they continue to grow and evolve. I say new and old, but really they're the same canon, and the same timeline; the new is really just an expansion and continuation of the old. Think of the legend of Hercules and his incredible 12 labors. He slew hydras and giants, dueled with gods, created the Strait of Gibraltar with his strength alone, and ascended to Mt. Olympus as a God, just to name a few. That is old canon. New canon is the truth behind that legend; what was the true story of Hercules, if there even was one?

Background

As I'm sure many of us have done, I've kept my own version of canon throughout the years. For about eight years now, I've built my timeline starting with my very first character and never breaking from that canon... until now. Well, sort-of. Following the same canon and dynasties across multiple sites, each with their own unique canons, has led to contradictions and inconsistencies over time. While my personal canon timeline had been established all the way up to at least 1,000 A.B.Y. with references to eras even beyond that, the question of the alternate timelines remained. How do the characters and stories from those alternate timelines (such as Legacies here on SWRP) fit into my canon? What about certain characters who show up in multiple alternate timelines during the same years, but live a different story in each one? Not to mention the development of my writing ability and style over the years.

Jump backwards eight years to my very first RP. I was taking a GM-like role in a one-on-one RP with my buddy Sean. It was set some time in the Old Republic era, and he was playing the role of Sean Tryor, a young commando for the Republic. He's supposed to interrogate a Trandoshan prisoner on-board some Republic ship over Coruscant. Before I continue, I should point out we were around 10 or 11 years old at the time. So... this interrogation goes down and the Trandoshan is supposed to be escorted by Tryor down to Coruscant to face execution. Before they make it to the hangar... A ******* invasion fleet enters orbit through like a wormhole or something, rips the Republic ships to pieces, and sacks the planet. I know. Keep reading.

Tryor and the prisoner barely escape, diving into an escape pod while the ship is torn in half behind them. The pod crashes into Coruscant below, where the two agree to work together to survive. It ends up turning into a quest to make their way to the Jedi Temple. Now, along the way, we learn that the invaders are led by Darth Revan, who had used some artifact to travel through time and build a massive armada from the past and future. Yeah... also there were zombies I think. In retrospect it's all pretty silly, but back then it all made sense, and it was the most epic, badass Star Wars fantasy that began the greatest saga my childhood would ever see.

That's right, the story became a saga of grand RP's and storytelling based around a single character: The nameless Trandoshan npc that I had intended to kill off and throw away in the first scene. He became Jandar Mallidon. My entire Star Wars canon has been based around this one character. To this day, my best friend Andrew and I still worship this guy. For years now, I've wanted to go back and rework my canon, but there's so much I never even knew where to start.

This shift in Star Wars canon and the idea of "Star Wars: Legends" is perfect for me; this idea that everything's like a sort-of mythology now. Who knows what really happened? So now I want to go back and, using my old canon as a guide, re-visit some of these old stories and find out what really happened. So I don't have to throw out all my stories about Jandar or some of his equally absurd descendants; they're all just legends, myths. I'm really excited to build a new canon starting with Dawn of the Republic, and explore the truth behind the legends of some of my favorite old canon characters.
