There is a tooka-cat wandering just beyond the entrance of the Temple, and he can't help but smile at the sight of it. There is something endearing, something quite relatable, about stray animals that draw Roanoke to them in ways that make his heart clench. Perhaps it's their search for a place of acceptance, somewhere to belong to, that makes him sympathetic to the lost and abandoned.

Navigating past the regulars - all the Padawans and the Knights eyeing him with barely concealed suspicion - is quite difficult given his physique and appearance. Broad shoulders and chest, scars on his forearms and the unnerving cicatrix that ran over his right cheekbone from his ear and over to his sharp nose. Buzz cut, mohawk, a few ear piercings here and there, the thin, black coat over a white band tee and baggy pants with the hems tucked in combat boots... he practically looks like a delinquent straight out of the streets of the lower levels of Coruscant. He doesn't hide who he is, not out of some arrogant sense of pride for whence he came from, but out of a sincere honesty that naturally comes to him. And besides, there is simply no hiding that he is- was once a Sith acolyte. It's as if he had asked, had wanted, to be one in the first place, anyway.

He's new to the Jedi Order. An initiate. Of course he would stand out.

And it's another thing unasked, if he's being honest.
But he endures the stares, the whispers, the wariness. Other people's perception of him is something he currently has no control over, so he lets them be.

His target sits there patiently, as if waiting for him to approach, and even if he isn't carrying a morsel of food with him the tooka-cat simply stares. Tail flicking languidly, sharp teeth flashing in the feline equivalent of a smile.

Roanoke takes great care not to block the path of a gaggle of kids - younglings - and presses himself flat against the wall as they pass by. Diffidently he pushes the facemask he is wearing snugly up his nose to cover the ugly scar marring his face when a little Trandoshan points up at it and none too subtly chats with his fellow kids about it.

Please don't point. It's rude...

He swallows the words, not wanting to appear snobbish. He presses on as soon as the children pass by, dark brown eyes alighting upon the tooka-cat once more. Roanoke crouches in front of the feline as soon as he reaches the Temple's entrance, reaching one large hand for the adorable creature to sniff.

"Lookin' for somewhere to belong to, aren't you?" he politely asks the cat, his voice surprisingly soft and gentle that contrasts against his rugged appearance. And as the tooka-cat begins to nuzzle against his rough, calloused palm, he hopes that the Order isn't against looking after strays. Roanoke is new here, and he doesn't want to be causing problems this early on in his jaunt as a Jedi intitate.

"INTERROGATION: What are you doing here Initiate?" Knight-Bot asked Roanoke inquisitively. The lightsaber training droid had just finished getting his joints back in working order. The oil bath had felt good but it was a painful reminder to Knight-Bot just how fragile his shell truly was. A relic from a war long ago fought, his hardware required constant maintenance, lest he fall by the wayside like so many of his fellow droids had.

The DT droid scanned his databanks, trying to see if he'd ever recorded any sparring sessions with this scarred Initatiate. Of course, he knew his name - the entire Jedi Order roster had been updated to his databanks - but the name was just about all he had.

OOC: Is this on Serndipal? Wasn't sure if the Jedi had a Temple there or not.

The tooka-cat hisses, and it's the only warning Roanoke gets. At least the feline didn't just take off at the sound of the robotic voice from behind the ex-Sith. The cat downright snuggles against him, as if seeking protection from the droid that hopefully means no harm.

He cradles the tooka-cat close to his chest in an attempt to conceal it from the droid, but it's no use as the tiny creature peeks from his shoulder to stare inquisitively up at the inorganic.

"J-Just... uh..." he stammers, soft-spoken voice growing increasingly quiet as he tries his damnedest not to wilt under the DT's 'gaze'. "Just ha-hanging around, I-I guess..."

Roanoke coaxes the tooka-cat back to his chest, trying to keep the wriggling creature from jumping at the droid.

OOC: I scanned the threads with the Sernpidal tag and some were set in a Temple setting, so I just assumed that there's a Jedi base there. I'd adjust my opening post if there's none, though.

"STATEMENT: Taking inventory. I do not believe the most esteemed Jedi Order has a tooka-cat. Such creatures are usually used to catch vermin but our ratcatcher droids and laser traps are more than up for the task." Knight-Bot said, his cold tone and large stature perhaps coming across as more intimidating than he intended.

"INTERROGATION: What is this tooka-cat doing in your possesion, Initaite?"

OOC: All good

Squirming against Roanoke's hold, the tooka-cat mews rather cutely up at the ex-Sith, most likely to reinforce its desire to be let go so it could jump up at the droid. But he never lets go, his grip firm but gentle, clearly afraid to hurt the small creature even in the slightest. Roanoke rises to his feet, turning to face the droid because trying to hide the tooka-cat is clearly moot by now.

"Y-Yeah, I don't think this little guy-" Roanoke checks the feline and corrects himself, "girl belongs here. Think she's a stray..."

When asked why the tooka-cat is in his possession, the Initiate wilts under the droid's question. He feels like he's being interrogated—the droid did state interrogation—for possibly wanting to do something that isn't allowed. Roanoke pauses for thought. Maybe pets aren't allowed in the Temple? Don't Jedi like taking care of those who need their help? He frowns lightly and shakes his head for thinking something so stereotypical.

"I... saw her ha-hanging by the entrance," he replies after a beat. "She's- She ain't mine, but, uh..."

I want to take care of her if she doesn't have anyone. But he doesn't say it out loud, wanting to make something clear first.

"Are pets not allowed here?" he asks the droid softly, a concerned frown on his face. "I'm R-Roanoke, by the way. Got, uh... g-got a name, friend?"

"CLARIFICATION: Pets are permitted, although Order resources are fairly stretched thin at the moment. This unit recommends that if you have a vested interest in this organism, you take personal responsibility for its welfare. The odds are no one else will care about it like you do."

A beat. Knight-Bot was never known for his emotional range but there were moments where even he could tell when his words might have come off as a bit too cold.

"CLARIFICATION: I could perhaps be counted upon to watch the tooka-cat when missions take you offworld. However, my programming is for lightsaber combat and taunting. Although, if the tasks were basic enough or if you happened to have a learning chip based on pet care knowlege, my memory banks have extra storage space." Knight-Bot offered

Roanoke lets out an audible sigh of relief when the droid clarifies that pets are permitted. He nods in response at the further advice, dark brown gaze falling upon the tooka-cat. She nuzzles against him, butting her head on his cheek as if she understands the droid's words.

"I-I'll take care o-of her," he tells the droid with a soft smile, not the least bothered that the inorganic's words comes off as a bit cold at the moment. Roanoke's smile widens when the droid adds another clarification, eyes shining with gratitude as he gently rubs the tooka-cat's chin. "T-Thank you... for your offer. I'd be happy to have s-someone lookin' after her while I'm gone."

The ex-Sith tilts his head to the side when the droid mentions learning chips. He doesn't have a droid of his own, at least not yet, but he does have a few chips hidden in his room just in case. None of them is based on pet care knowledge, however.

"I... d-don't have that kind of learning chip," he responds after a moment's pause. Roanoke looks back at the Temple. He then suggests, "Maybe t-there's one in the archives...?"

"Sadly, no. I've made an inventory of the learning chips that the archive contains and most of them are either redundant to my current programming or being put to use servicing the Order's many other droids." Knight-Bot explained, with a touch of sadness creeping through his automated voice. The lightsaber training bot may love proving its mettle against young Jedi but he did also have quite the appetite for learning. Or as close to "learning" as a droid could get.

"INTERROGATION: You seemed to allude to the fact that you have some learning chips of your own? I am always looking to improve my functionality and expand my skill set to better service the Order. If you can spare a learning chip, I could offer you something that might COLLOQUIALISM: make it worth your while."

"Oh, I see," Roanoke comments with a light, contemplative frown on his brow. At the droid's question, however, the Initiate visibly perks up. Holding the tooka-cat close, he gives the inorganic a shy smile. "Uh, yes, actually, um..."

Taking a step back towards the Temple, Roanoke glances at the droid over his shoulder. "I got some in my dorm room..."

Trusting that the droid would follow, the former acolyte begins to lead the way. Passing by the usual hustle and bustle within the enclave, Roanoke makes sure to keep his pace even, as well as for the tooka-cat contained in his arms. The little creature is beginning to squirm again, and even letting out a rather loud meow when a delicious aroma wafting from the kitchens drift towards the trio. He shushes her, making a promise of food later, before he takes a left down the hall towards the Padawan dormitories.

Roanoke's assigned room is positioned on the far end of the hall. He has no roommate simply because the other Padawans doesn't want to bunk with an ex-Sith, but he doesn't let it discourage him. At least not yet. He's still new to the Order; maybe perceptions about him might change with time?

The door slides open, and Roanoke steps inside to invite Knight-Bot to the room. It's a study in contrast to the former acolyte's appearance: while Roanoke looks rugged due to his broad frame, mohawk, and scars, the room is practically spotless and neatly organized. A bunk bed is situated on the corner of the room, the bottom one clearly occupied, with the sheets straightened and blankets neatly folded. Positioned by the window is a desk, and on top of it lay various knitting materials inside a tray. A jacket is haphazardly draped over the back of a chair, and Roanoke straightens it out of habit.

He then begins digging through the drawer under the desk for said learning chips after setting the tooka-cat on the floor. The feline, given freedom for a moment, trots over Knight-Bot before making an attempt to scale the droid to settle on its shoulder.

"Please, come in!" he invites the droid, more confident in his bearing this time as he retrieves three learning chips while searching for others. "I have learning chips for, uh, let's see..." Roanoke glances at the labels with a narrowed gaze. "...cooking, freighter maintenance, and, um, wait- this third one says knitting, might be a mislabel though..."

Knight-Bot did indeed follow the young Padawan to his dorm room, ducking past a pair of dueling younglings and a Jedi Temple Security Guardsman lugging a crate down the hallway. Once they entered the room, Roanoke began reading off the list of learning chips he had on his person. Knight-Bot's logic processors began heating as they decided the best course of action.

Freighter maintenance? It had promise. It would certainly help Knight-Bot's value when it came to space combat and he could provide a hand to the Order's beleaguered and understaffed mechanic's pool. However, freighters were hardly common ships to own for Jedi and Knight-Bot doubted very much that it was a skill he'd be using frequently enough to justify takin up valuable memory space.

Knitting? His mechanical hands, adept enough for combat were hardly dexterous enough to make knitting a viable path for him. Plus, scarves and sweaters were nice enough but given that most Jedi either wore the traditional robes of the Order or their own clothes, Knight-Bot again doubted his skills would be in much demand with that chip.

That left cooking. Food was certainly always in high demand in the order, even amongst the most hermetic of Jedi. At night, Knight-Bot often was bored, given how most Jedi slept and didn't want to duel. But with cooking, he could be social and join the night crew of the kitchens. Plus there may even be combat applications. He could now add vibrocleavers and skewers to his repertoire of weaponry and knowing where to precisely cut an organism for maximum damage would be nice to know on a proper battlefield.

"STATEMENT: I thank you for your generosity and have surmised the cooking chip would be most useful to me. INTERROGATION: If I may ask, however, how is it that you came to posess so many of these? I don't mean to pry but learning chips are not inexpensive and most Jedi don't have the means to afford one, let alone three to hold in reserve." Knight-Bot asked Roanoke.
