Pretty much. I sort of envision the Sith philosophy of the strength of self being part of the Sacred Band's internal culture, while also not being necessarily beholden to the more religious aspects of the Sith, including the philosophies of the Force and reverence of the dead. So the Sacred Band still follow Sith idealogies to a certain extent, but they're much more pragmatic about it as well, which in turn is a source for conflict between them and the more mystical Sith Order, who they're more or less on equal footing with in terms of hierarchy within the larger Sith kingdom. I think that last point is important to note, as well - I don't want people thinking that membership in the Sacred Band is confining yourself to be an underling. You can backchat your peers in the Sith all you like tbh - after all, the old Sith Empire was ruled by the Sith Order, and look how that turned out. You've kind of got justification for looking down your nose at the Sith Order, if you choose to.

The way I would look at a Sacred Band character is to build off of a single question - how does one believe in, and fight for the Sith cause without being a Force user or believing in the mystical elements of Sith culture? You could be a political idealist at heart, or come from a warlike culture that finds more in common with the Sith's policy of rule by force than the diplomacy and trade of the Republic. You could be in it for the excitement, the money and/or the glory. You could be a patriot, seeking to revitalize the Empire of old. Or you could choose to not buy into any of it at all and question your place within the Sacred Band and possibly seek to change the culture from within. There's a lot to play with.

I'm playing a Sith who is very anti-religious and pragmatic, and ultimately wishes for the old, mystical order to be torn down. We have a few RPers playing Sith leaning towards that direction, so maybe we could bro-up against the fusty old , immortality-obsessed wizards?

The faction isn't even a thing yet and we're already hard at work planning to tearing each others throats out.

I'm sure more pragmatic Sith would be welcome to buddy up closer to the SBZ, mutual respect and ideology breeds closer alliances. If enough Sith feel more at home with the SBZ I wonder if a cultural divide would grow to the point of civil war, the followers of the old ways threatened by the increase in new ideology. If the SBZ alongside those more pragmatic less religious Sith wind up being more successful than the Old Order I can definitely see a revolution as a result. It may just be speculation but regardless I'm really excited to see where this new timeline will lead.

Well, I've proposed the idea of a Warrior sect for the Sith Order, which is made up of the more military-oriented, non-religious Sith. They have different goals, unrelated to the preservation of Moraband and are all about tearing down the old ways to make for the new. I thought that would be a good prompt for more inner conflict, aswell give Sith RPers more incentive to partake in battles.

I see the SBZ as the group that does all the work of expanding Sith territory while the Sithies fight Jedi and manipulate the overall battle plan. SBZ versus BA, Sith Versus Jedi, Senate vs Senate vs Indies vs BA.

When it comes to people fighting for the Sith I was toying with a, "Service Guarantees Citizenship," sort of deal. Assuming you are willing to fight for the Sith they allow you to live as a better class of citizen. Your family won't be enslaved, you can own a business, ect. That with a dose of patriotism would be enough for be to believe it. Would also work well with the religious aspects as not everyone will believe it completely but, it'd help.

Tis a good strategy to gain followers and influence, something I can see the pragmatic Sith/SBZ offering people. Given the 'darker' part in Sith history though I see just as many people resorting to more violent or manipulative means though, we'll have to see how they play it out.

After giving the various main factions some consideration, I think that my current character concept would best fit in the SBZ.
I would rather focus on the more delicate part of the expanding of the empire, using opportunities for all those evil manipulations abound, as where already mentioned here. He is going to be a doctor turned warrior of the slightly psychpathic kind.

Working on the above idea, I think that his original intentions to work with the Sith might be the promise of rewards in status and money. Though with this gone along with the collapse of the Sith Empire, he would work to maintain/reclaim, what is remaining of his holdings as a short time goal and than gathering control of "more". I currently see him as a Falleen noble in exil seeking to overthrow his own kind and rule the center of the civilized galaxy (which would obviously be Falleen).

In terms of group dynamics, I see him as a "supporter", using his contacts and ressources to supply the other SBZ with information and materials to actually carry out the frontline, if undercover, business. Therefore acting as sort of a logistics officer.

Has anybody considered the propaganda machine needed to expand Sith territory? The words "Sith" or "Empire" would leave a bad taste in people's mouths when considering their worlds falling under new leadership.

Well, we can't call it the "First" Order

As a plug, I workshopped a character for the SBZ.

Two words:

Indie. Space.

Trying to conquer Republic aligned worlds right off is just asking for trouble. Look to those unaffiliated with the Republic, of which there will be many, and coerce them into siding with the Sith. Appeal to local anti-Republic sentiments [if any], offer protection from local/regional threats [if any], grease the palms of greedy politicians and/or corporate moguls in the sector to direct popular opinion along lines that would be sympathetic to the Sith agenda. The possibilities are endless, and I feel that our initial focus as a group should be to size the initiative to foster stronger sentiments of loyalty to the SBZ, all while continuing to serve under the auspices of the Sith.

They way the timeline is set up, the Republic is more like the European Union than the United States. There is no unifying military apparatus, each individual world has their own military. The Border Alliance is a regional defense alliance designed to counter the Sith, but it's not Galaxy wide (or even Rim wide, I imagine) so the Sith could take a few worlds. The problem they'd have is that then the Senate has to respond, and bam, you have a Republic military forming. So, destabilizing Border Alliance worlds and creating havoc is probably the best way to handle the Republic at first. Weaken confidence in it by having legitimate militaries busy putting down revolts by rag-tag groups who are covertly supported by the Sith. A la Donbass in the Ukraine.

Probalbly the most determined, military thread we are facing in the beginning will be the BA, suported by the more war-like Jedi. That being said, starting any open conflict with them, where we show the hint of winning will unite the senate more sooner than later and thus give way to a centralized military force. Therefore, instead of waking the sleeping dogs, I agree that we should instead destabilize the Senate and distance them from the Border Alliance, so they will have to relay on their own.

Story-wise speaking, I see our characters operating more like the Rebellion or crime syndicates in other scenarios, albeit with a fortified base (Sith space). Striking covertly to weaking the regime, albeir for not so honorary means, though we could surely put this causes on the forefront of our propaganda machine. Like freeing them from the oppression of the Republic or something. At the same time gaining influence through pawns and proxies.

Well, that's the thing about the Jedi: they aren't explicitly aligned with the Republic or the BA. They are a faction unto themselves who - in good theory following what we know of the Jedi from experience at least - won't be so quick to take up arms against a Sith threat that hasn't even made itself overtly known yet. We know that the BA is a loose organization of worlds united under the shared experience of past wars with the Sith, suggesting that the galaxy will start in a relative state of calm with no major conflict brewing on the horizon.

With no obvious Sith threat to act against, the Jedi will have little to do but act as mediators for planetary disputes [a la Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan with the TF in TPM]. So long as the Sith keep quiet and don't come creeping out of their modly old tombs to swing their red glowsticks at everyone while muttering useless tripe about "destiny", the Jedi have absolutely no reason to respond in kind.

In a sense, the Republic, BA and Jedi are all part of a fractured force that could be, more concerned with their own matters to begin with. Whereas the SBZ and the Sith have the unique opportunity to collaborate and get in a few early wins against an enemy who still has their collective heads in the sand.

The way the Jedi are written, they are a subset of the Order which is zealously pursuing the Sith. Sure, the full Jedi Order won't be hunting the Sith, yet, but the PC Jedi Order probably will be trying to discover if the Sith are really back yet or not. Which means, ideally, the SBZ are the vanguard designed to help keep the Sith hidden.

Figured I'd show off my character draft for my Sacred Band of Ziost character in case any others need inspiration or want to get an idea of where to go, etc. I went for an exiled Mandalorian, turned pirate, then turned zealot of the Sith way. He religiously believes in the Sith message, the way of the Force, and what not because, afterall, faith isn't founded in evidence or proof. Still, he retains a strong martial background and is a capable warrior in his own right.

Disclaimer: ex-Mandalorian is backstory, I know nothing of and care little for Mandalorian culture, and the views expressed about it within the biography are the narrow-minded views of a fictional rebellious young adult - they don't need to be logical or 'true.'

Arkon Rall
[fancybox4="https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/0a/e3/46/0ae34638791c5a0bd5299d4ff217a0f3.jpg"]FULL NAME: Arkon Rall
AGE: 34
SPECIES: Mandalorian
HOMEWORLD: Concord Dawn

HEIGHT: 183 cm
WEIGHT: 78 kg

EYE COLOR: Amber
HAIR COLOR: Dirty Blond
SKIN COLOR: Tan
MARKINGS: Scar over right eye

FACTION: Sacred Band of Ziost
RANK: TBD

Veteran to a dozen battlefields, exiled by his clan and his people, hunted and wanted, Rall has scourged the stars for purpose. That purpose, he found, was within himself. It is his own rage, rage against the way of things, that gave him purpose. It drove him to the Dark Lords, where on Ziost he proved his worth in deadly melee and contests of skill, wherein he saw the brutal machine that was the Sith illuminate within him a new sense of belief. Dedicated to the Dark Lords, his is the will to deliver the Galaxy from the weak and to the wise, the mighty, and the just.
[/fancybox4]

Personality
[fancybox2]
2h5pq0x.png
Rall is, first and foremost, a warrior and a commander. Instilled with the knowledge to fight wars, the grace to kill, and the concern and patience to lead the best, he has left behind his connections to a life best forgotten. Instead, he has replaced this lost fragment of himself with newfound zeal and conviction to the Sith. He has witnessed dark miracles, undeniable skill, and brutal intellect at the spearhead of a group which he knows are the fittest to lead the Galaxy forward to enlightenment.

He despises hesitation, weakness, and un-reciprocated compassion. He acts on his hatred slowly and patiently, but in the end, severely and deadly. His driving purpose in life has become the Sith Order, and he has found his own power through their teachings. Freedom through strength, security and justice through power, embracing ones true self. He is no longer beholden, as his kin are, to others perceptions of him; of his honor or integrity, his skill, or his future. He is his own man, and has internalized redefined these terms at a personal level, caring only what others think of him when it could impact his own survival. He is, for lack of a better word, a zealot of the Sith, dedicated thoroughly to serving and empowering them. Through that power he will find strength for himself, knowing he will never be fit to replace them, but that they will always find purpose and meaning in him so long as he stays sharp, and most importantly, loyal to the cause.

[/fancybox2]

BIOGRAPHY
[fancybox4="http://i63.tinypic.com/r1jwcm.png"]Born a Mandalorian on the world of Concord Dawn, Arkon Rall was always expected to maintain a level of integrity and stability by his community. Taught all the essentials of Mandalorian culture - language, culture, combat - it never sat well with Arkon to blindly believe in others beliefs of ones self. He rebelled against his family and their expectations, set far too high he believed, and sought solace in his adolescence with his friend, his comrade - his love - Olix Ordo. Olix comforted him, always trying to guide him back to the straight and narrow path of the Mandalorian, but always there to listen and accept Rall's frustrations. Through the years the two would grow even closer, sparring with each other on the field of battle in friendly tournaments of skill on air, land, sea and eventually even space.

Olix was his superior in many aspects, but Rall was always driven to learn from him; his drive to be like his lover helped to mask his own rebellious nature from his clan. But this was not to last; the two would be deployed to take action against pirates raiding trade routes near their world, an action which would turned out far bloodier than necessary. He felt it was because of his own people's intransigence, their incapacity to see beyond their own noses, and when Olix's body drifted lifelessly through space, Rall had nothing holding him back. The negotiations with the pirates turned sour and Rall drew his blaster on his squad leader in the midst of it all, gunning him down before surrendering to the corsairs. He had done so for the mans suicidal folly which saw the deaths of more than half of his men, he had taken revenge for his love, but everything he knew was stripped from him.

The corsairs had witnessed Rall's betrayal and debated between recruiting him or ransoming him back to the Mandalorians. "Having a Mandalorian by our side, that could count for something," one of them had said. The corsair commander had thought on it for several days, then interrogated Rall, learning of the man's own disloyalty to his own culture. The lopsided grin that he gave would eventually rub off on Rall and he gave him the freedom to rule his own life. Rall fought alongside the corsairs for years to come, but eventually a crackdown by local law enforcement led to the group disbanding. Like several others, Rall followed the corsair leader along to a mercenary company, and for several more years they put down revolts, were paid well and spent that well on brothels, bars and drugs. Through it all, many of the corsairs that had followed the commander now looked more to Rall for his skill, leadership, and more importantly, his loyalty to his friends. When the mercenary company was disbanded by law, many of the veteran corsairs that had served alongside Rall for the better part of a decade looked to him for a new path in life.

But Rall lacked purpose. He had tired of killing for money, with no end in sight, no greater impact on the shape of the galaxy. There was so much that needed changing. Rumors stirred beyond the far reaches of the Outer Rim, in the dark stars that barely clung to the gravitic field of the galaxy, that the Sith had returned. He had learned of the Sith as myths and rumors, almost legendary figures who sought to unite the galaxy through power. He had live in the Republic long enough to despise it, and so he made the journey, along with his comrades, to where the Sith were. As criminals, they had the connections necessarily to find them, although even then doing so was difficult. At times, Rall felt he only discovered the Sith because they chose to allow it.

His first meeting with the Sith changed his life. Enraged, a Dark Lord slaughtered assassins sent to hunt him, and sought to unleash his rage on Rall and his meager company, but stopped when Rall did not flinch. Standing before the Dark Lord and his humming saber, Arkon Rall bowed his head ever so slightly and introduced himself and his men. Though he was no Force user, he explained, he sought a different path in life. A path with greater meaning and purpose. This path would first lead him to Morraband, where in the tombs of dead Darth's he felt real power, a real future, even as he escorted one he knew to be powerful. He knew then what future lay before him, and that the trials on Ziost would be just a stepping stone.

I agree to the impression that the Jedi Knights are more like witch hunters in this setting, some possibly even obsessively so. Therefore, they might pro-actively search for the Sith and their influence in order to rouse that larger Republic (as well as their more reserved kin) to action. Therefore I assume even for us as a band of warriors, the battlefield would be a lot more in the political field to begin with, using the acquiring the independant worlds as (unknowing) allies to mount a war against the fledgling Republic as well as stalling the Zealots.

Meanwhile, I have gone so far as to be able to present my first draft of my character for the SBZ. Being a a new player, I sticked to a simple design template (thanks for that), without any fancy boxes as for now. While I have certain events of his history already in mind, I will wait for more of the timeline becoming available, before I will type it down in full text. I think it would be very interesting to have some connections between the SBZ members, seeing as they are all part of the same, once-glorious legion. I even left space for someone write on my yearbook biography. Any feedback would be much appreciated, though please leave more detailed input in the Workshop thread in order to avoid spamming this topic Link.

Dalrel Anater'zin

2nn400.jpg

NAME: Dalrel Anater'zin
ALIAS(ES): (None decided yet)
FACTION: The Sith Order (Sacred Band of Ziost)
RANK: (Member)
SPECIES: Falleen
HOMEWORLD: Falleen

AGE: 63
GENDER: Male
HEIGHT: 1,58 Meters
WEIGHT: 79 kg
EYES: The iris of his eyes is entracingly yellow, complete with green, reptilian slits.
HAIR: His dark green hair has an almost blackish coloring to them. He grows it along the center of his head, moving down in a short, but clear line towards his spine. As with many other Falleen warriors, he usually wears it tightly bound into an orderly plait that goes down until the middle of his shoulders.
SKIN: He has a leathery, almost scally green tone to his skin. Like other Falleen, he is able to change the tone of his skin to other shades of green and even into a reddish hue.
DISTINGUISHING MARKS: At the first glance, one might notice a few scars every here and there on the body of the Falleen. Though most of them add to the image of the warrior he is putting on and augment his rough charm. More distinctively is that most of his left leg have been replaced by cybernetics in an attempt to replenish what no longer could been saved. A layer of skin has been applied to cover the cybernetic leg, though the appearance is imperfect.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: (Compliation of Dalrel's physicial appearance)

STRENGTH: 4/10
While being part of probably the worst band of warriors across the Outer Rim, Dalrel is not exactly the strongest of them. While originally not past his prime in terms of physical abilites, past events have dimished them somewhat early on.
DEXTERITY: 5/10
Due to some of his injuries and the state of current technological replacements, his overall mobility, balance and speed is somewhat limited. Really you won't see him swinging around vines anytime soon. However, his eye-to-hand coordination has not suffered, making him very talented at fine manipulation.
CONSTITUTION: 6/10
Dalrel's numerous scars and wounds, as well as the fact that he is still standing, are proof of his endurance. However, the same scars and wounds are the ones that weaken his toughness now, not that he would let anyone know.
INTELLIGENCE: 8/10
Dalrel has been a genius ever since, that's at least what he boasts. The truth is, he is not entirely wrong. He is a fast learner and just as quick to adapt to new situation as he is to find creative, if not always efficient, methods of dealing issues that arise.
WISDOM: 7/10
Insightfulness and quickness of mind are two of the major attributes required for someone working alongside the Sith, if you don't want to be caught in the schemes and strange powers. Add a nice portion of stubborness and you have Dalrel. However, his little superior complex sometimes make him overlook things he should not have missed.
CHARISMA: 8/10
Some may call it arrogance, but his latent aura of superiority seems to have a habit of winning people over. Though not as overt as the powers of Force users, he has a habit of shoving people in the right direction to make them do the things, he wants them to do. That the Falleen in general are both biologically and psychologically inclined towards social manipulation only adds to it.

FORCE SENSITIVE: No

PERSONALITY:
Calling Dalrel an arrogant prick would be an understatement. Over the years he has developed a distinct superiority complex, even after being rebuffed a few times from the claims of his skill. Add to this the ambition to shape not only his homeworld, but also the galaxy in total to his liking, one is save to say that he has lost it. That said, he is not the one to be to obvious about his megalomania. In fact, he does a very good job at hiding it from everyone just barely close to him, which are not that many. True to his heritage as a Falleen he prefers to keep a certain mysterious allure, a habit that more often than not wins people over with his smile and antics. He is no stranger to overing loyalty to others, though its more like an agreement or alliance than real friendship.

He comes off as cold and calculating, which is true in most of the cases. He takes his time to think problems though, applying possible solutions and scenarios in his own mind before acting. He is not one to act rashly, though he once was different and some of his comrades know that these changes happened recently with his partaking in one of the most infamous organizations in Sith Space. Sometimes he is the voice of reason amongst his more warlike peers, though more often he is also amongst the driving force for seeking a more radical - if long-termed - solution. He seems more jaded to gore and the horrors of the dark side of the force than most, if only by what he has seen and survived.

People know, he is in it for the boons of being part in the reforming of an Empire. Wealth, fame, status and all the luxuries that live have to offer. While he certainly likes the advantages the victory of the Sith Order would bring, there are also other reasons for him working alongside them. Deep within him burns the bonfire of fanatism to the ideals of the Sith, the rule of the mighty through the slavery of the weak. It's a vision he is sharing, one that is the pinpoint of his loyality to the Sith as a whole. Yet he certainly sees himself as equal if not better suited to represent those ideals as some of the Sith themselves.

SKILLS:
Dalrel has the advantage of a longer lifetime than most humanoids, thereby the chance to pick up a multitude of skills and some handy knowledge. However, while certainly holding the knowledge for some, he might be limited in his capabilities to actually perform the level of physical feats.

STRENGTHS...
+His main strength and possible the only reason for his continued survival in such a warlike culture is improvisation and adaption. Being the quick study that he is, he found a way to make use of what he has and expand on it in short time, no matter what destiny has thrown at him.
+Being a Falleen, he is naturally resistant to mind tricks. Something he has tried to expand further by training and pure willpower with quite some success.
+ Another positive effect of the Falleen physiology is the ability to produce pheromones at will that attracts others to them. A handy ability which Dalrel has used to his advantage in the past.
+ While no longer the mighty, brilliant warrior on the battlefield, he has retained his brilliant mind and understanding for the tactics of the Sith and other Force users, giving him a bit of an edge in combat against them.
...AND WEAKNESSES
- He is physically crippled since his Trial and faithful encounter with his (currently unnamed) rival. It has much dimished his physical abilities, even if him being fully crippled has been sustained by cybernetic replacements.
- While he was once a good, or at least passable fighter, he now suffers from his body not being able to keep up with his training and knowledge, both physically and mentally. While he would be good instructor for young recruits, he is simply to proud to lower himself to such levels.
- He has a superiority complex (actually megalomania disorder), which tends to cloud his perspective in the least opportune moments and also sometimes hassles him with delusions. Not to mentioned that this is also one of the things that will quickly help you get into his favor, if you press the right buttons.
- Although ambitions and outwardly cold, he is a hedonist at heart, often prone to enjoying the finer things in life, once he attained them. At the same time, he is greedy enough that he wants to possess as much of these finer things as possible.

That's a good idea Pilgrim. Anybody who hasn't posted a link to their SBZ character for the new timeline should do so.
@Necris could you compile that and put it on the original post? The link to my character is in my sig.
