Rafe was acting weird ever since Mae called Maddie in. Did he not like humans, or just frightened girls from a past failed union or whatever Dogs have. She caught him giving both of them quick glances every few minutes. This is the first time Mae saw the paranoid side of him. But everyone in this line of work has been backstabbed in one way or another and maybe Rafe just has not had anyone he could trust before and it was hard for him to do so, with Mae.
She herself got burned by her second master. He had kept his hands to himself until she turned legal age and then he proposed to her and when she declined he made her life hell, and thus backstabbed her. Mae then was rescued by Rex and befriended Maddie and has trusted them ever since, and never had to trust anyone else until now.
She took all of this under advisement as she approached Rafe as he rested in a sitting position a moment. She was almost his height at this level but still just under a foot shorter. She had the sudden urge to reach out and scratch him behind the ear of the helmet piece, but quickly stopped herself. He does not know her enough to trust her yet. As he was taking a few deep breaths and catching his wind, Mae leaned down and looked up at him. "Hey there big guy" She cewd, (not sure if that is the right word but it was a "calming whisper"). "What gotten into you?" She asked as she catches him looking over at Maddie but not saying anything. Mae reads his body langue bright and clear. "Awe, so its my friend I brought in?" She giggles. "She does not bite, go introduce yourself." She said. He just continued to sit there and did not budge. "Okay...... right.... well if your not scared of her bite, is it because I brought her in on the score without letting you know ahead of time?" She asked. This time Rafe looked back at her in a confirming response.
"Awe okay, fair enough. Well, this thing we got started here, which I am going to be bold enough to call a friendship, is brand new and needs trust from both sides if it's going to work right? And you are right, I did not trust you enough to let you know I had backup lined up in advance. But, before you judge me too harshly, lets just mention the fact that you too had a ship in backup in case I failed and you did not inform me of this. So too me, this looks like you giving me a test which I happily accepted, but had a crutch close by as if I had already failed.... sounding about right?" She asked. "So we clearly, both have some trust issues and in our line of work you cant be too careful. I am willing to say that I had a small lapse in judgement and not showing all of my cards on the table, if can admit that you too, had a small lapse in judgement on expecting me to fail before I even tried, right?" she finished.
She let him ponder this all for a min before saying "I think we have a bright future together, but only if we can get past such petty things like this that are keeping us from uniting in a common goal, increased power and reputation"
"Now, before I go back to loading the rest of the cargo, let me leave one last bit of info to think about. Is it better that I revealed that I had an extra ship on deck to help us with excess loot so that we can all split the credits from the sale of all of it, or would you have rather ditched the ship half emptied and my friend here came in later after we left and cleaned out the remaining loot and we don't get to share on their prize credits?" She asked as she put the situation into perspective. She had been up front with him instead of backstabbing him and taking the rest of the loot for herself.
