DESCRIPTION
The Dreadnaught-class duraclad by Core Galaxy Systems, not to be confused with the later Dreadnaught-class cruiser by Rendili StarDrive or the ultra-heavy warship classification under the Anaxes War College System, is an archaic class of capital ship which first appeared several thousand years before the Battle of Yavin.

The Dreadnaught predates modern warship class definitions, and was referred to as a "duraclad", an archaic term which was used to describe military vessels with duranium hulls, a significant advancement at the time, albeit one which was already being rendered obsolete by the gradual switch to doonium and similar alloys in naval architecture. In modern terms, it would have rated as a heavy cruiser, although it would be considered severely lacking in terms of armament and other capabilities. 900 meters in length, it had a main armament consisting of a single fixed heavy turbolaser firing forward, plus a secondary, tertiary and quaternary batteries of heavy, medium and light laser turrets respectively, with more flexibility of fire but only limited numbers of each. Other weapons include a quartet of tractor beams, as well as 4 turreted concussion missile launchers.

The Dreadnaught, unlike some warships of its era, was equipped to carry starfighters. 12 are housed in an internal hangar bay, and are deployed via an antiquated repulsor-accelerated launch chute array, meant to cut down fuel use during deployment for the small, short-range starfighters of the day. It could also carry an octet of shuttles, meant to support the vessel's primary role.

Notably, unlike many warships then and even now, the Dreadnaught had a fairly small crew requirement for its size, with a full crew of just 220 individuals, plus up to 50 passengers. Although this made the vessel easy to operate, it reduced redundancy in the event of combat losses among the crew, although this was considered a fair tradeoff by many. The ships cargo and consumable capacity were also somewhat small for its size, however; a mere 3,000 standard tons of payload, and consumable sufficient for a mere 2 weeks in space.

The Dreadnaught was designed for a specific role; mainly, it was intended to deliver shock troops to a planet's surface through a strong orbital defense. Though laughable now, it was well suited to this mission in the days before ubiquitous planetary shields. Using its prime weapon to deal with orbital pickets, the Dreadnaught would dive into the atmosphere to disgorge landing shuttles and their fighter screens. It was the siege-breaker of choice for a number of Mid and Outer Rim empires prior to the High Republic expansion, and was used by the Republic itself during the Sith-Jedi wars. In the years since, however, advances in technology have made the tactics the Dreadnaught was designed for untenable, and so new uses have been found for them in combat.

Although no longer the cutting edge of military technology that they once were, Dreadnaught-class duraclads do still exist, their robust construction allowing them to serve for millennia with only cursory maintenance. Many, of course, have been scrapped over the years, or relegated to mothball fleets. In the present, as the Galaxy again spirals toward another round of bitter warfare, system and sector fleets have been shaking out their inventories, returning any number of half-forgotten antiques to active service, many Dreadnaughts among them.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Dreadnaught-class duraclads are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from Legends canon into our site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
Dreadnaught-class duraclads are large capital ships with heavy weapons, and capital ships cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. A faction would be required to obtain and crew a ship of this size; alternatively, it could be owned jointly by at least 3 characters who work together regularly.
