DESCRIPTION
The EF90 Redemption-class medical frigate is a product of Kuat Drive Yards dropping its production of the outdated EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigates, and a need for hospital ships to combat the spread of the AMS virus throughout the galaxy. It also represents the New Republic's continued modernization, efforts to meet the needs of the ever-changing galaxy, following its split from the Free Worlds Alliance. The relatively new Fondor-Jade Corporation based its design on the old modified Nebulon frigates used by the Alliance to Restore the Republic as medical frigates during the Galactic Civil War.Much of the weaponry that would normally adorn escort frigates has been stripped away to make room for medical facilities and to ensure enough power for medical tools and supplies. As a result, it has six rather than twelve medium turbolaser batteries and just eight point-defense light laser cannons to defend itself against enemy attacks. Hanger space has also been greatly reduced, as much of what would have been a starfighter launch bay has been replaced with bacta tanks and recovery areas. The frigate can still launch up to three starfighters to defend itself, but is largely reliant on support craft for defense.
EF90s had several decks of medical facilities and a large dedicated medical staff to run them. Up to sixteen bacta tanks occupied these decks, along with rooms for complex surgical procedures, and—thanks to the AMS pandemic—sites for vaccine distribution and special, reinforced quarantine zones for those already exposed. At full capacity, an EF90 can treat 745 patients simultaneously with minimal waiting times, allowing one ship to achieve high recovery rates than most planetside hospitals. As a result, the New Republic Defense Forces frequently dispatched EF90s to breakout zones to evacuate and treat the injured. The New Republic also dispatches EF90s to aid its allies in the Outer Rim Territories.
Although material shortages due to the New Republic's political separation from the resource-rich Outer Rim have slowed production somewhat, a steady supply of materials from the New Republic's allies in the Galactic Senate ensure EF90 medical frigates are still being built and commissioned at a relatively steady pace.
LEGALITY
Restricted. EF90 Redemption-class medical frigates are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons, making them difficult or impossible for civilians and even small factions to own. To date, however, this has been a non-issue, as they are exclusively sold to the New Republic Navy by their manufacturer.INTENT
To give the New Republic a medical frigate that will allow it to respond quickly to the growing needs of the AMS pandemic.RESTRICTIONS
EF90 Redemption-class medical frigates are large capital ships with heavy weapons, and capital ships cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They are currently exclusive to the New Republic faction.
