Small would be something along the lines of an explosive trigger, hand held weapon, even the circuits within a droid. A 'large' piece of equipment would be something along the lines of a control console for a turret, a speeder bike, a speeder, etc.

Based on my conversations with Kiro and others, an Ion grenade releases a sudden burst of energy to fry electronics. The purpose of this write is primarily bomb disposal, but can also be used in a similar fashion to an ion grenade. As evidenced by a recent thread, when someone attempted to use an ion grenade against an explosive, it caused it to explode.

An emp grenade emits an electro magnetic pulse that disables circuits, rather then emitting a sudden burst of energy that just fries circuits. According to the wookieepedia page, an Ion grenade actually does damage due to a high explosive shock, whereas an EMP grenade merely renders electronics and electrical interfaces inert. There's no damage explosion to cause exterior damage, the circuits literally just stop working.

Think of this as a dialed down version of an Ion grenade, with the express intent of disabling explosives, but also being serviceable in similar capacities to an Ion grenade.
