For several reasons, EVE Online subscriptions - "pilot license extensions" - have become an in-game item to be bought and sold among players - and stored in cargo holds of the sci-fi MMO's ships. You know where this is going.

Seventy-four "PLEXes" - these 30-day subscriptions - were in the cargo of "a lone Kestrel in in Jita" reports Massively, apparently a bad neighborhood and an underweight craft. Two pirates scanned the cargo and pounced. Though they could have stolen the cargo and used or sold it in-game with the consent of EVE publisher CCP, it was instead destroyed by the raid. Seventy-four 30-day codes amount to six years of game time, and cost more than $1,000.

Why are these things destructible virtual items? Massively says that CCP had problems with players buying in-game currency from shady gold-farmers, and commoditized the 60-day game time code as a 30-day PLEX that can change hands legitimately in the game without sanctions. This allows folks who are good at building up ISK (the game's currency) to renew their subs via playtime, more or less. Only last month did CCP enable these items to be transportable by ship. Obviously, pirates scan cargo before they attack, so one could assume any PLEX, let alone 74, makes you a high-value target in a bad neighborhood.

At current prices, 74 PLEX would command 22 billion ISK. If bought from CCP, the six years, two months worth of game time would cost $1,295. Ouch.

Funniest part is one of the comments on the article.

I wouldnt use anything less then a battleship to transport that shit. But in a war I wouldnt even undock in a battleship to be honest unless I got some remote rep to keep the shit alive.

also titans and motherships are worth more then 22 billion alone imagine how much capital losses are

A carrier or dreadnought with normal fitting costs from 2-10 billion isk (the fitting being more expensive then the ship itself)

A jump freighter or rorqual (capital support ships costs billions aswell.) in essence a well fitted battleship or tech 2 / faction is also near the plex cost

I still hate you for ganking my 4 billion dollar freighter in the Great Wildlands before I got to Curse space.

mind you if you roam 0.0 space (which these guys do) that you can do missions and scanning missions (complexes) that earn you millions in bountys and equipment and sometimes special items worth anywhere from 250-2 billion (I once got an item worth 1.5 billion which was the best shield booster in the game. kaching!)

You were in my double zero space, you hag. The Great Wildlands were connected to Curse space, MY space. Why in hell you were in GW is beyond me still to this day. I still have that two year grudge against you. Four billion down in my freighter, lost nearly double that in ISK. It doesn't help your buddies podkiled either. Buncha mangy pirates.

Too right about that. Never got anywhere on the 14 days trial.

Try playing it for five months, I still didn't understand most of what was going on. Lovely helpful community though.
