Oosalon

Deep in the mountains of Oosalon in the Outer Rim, Voyage Now, a joint exploration expedition, had since gone underway. Led by Tarticus Salvin, a Zabrak Force-sensitive, the team set out for the planet to discover what secrets rested within its barren landscape.

Days led to nights, evenings transformed into mornings, and throughout all hours the group of scientists and archeologists steadily charted the mountain range to record its flora and fauna.

The former was not much worth reporting, with short grass and thirsty trees where there were any, so they set up their outpost in one of the few forested areas. It was to their own detriment.

Local fauna was far less forgiving. As uncertain earthquakes continued to plague the explorers, ravenous moles emerged from the earth to harass the team; giant birds dared anyone to travel the naked plains; and razor-clawed predators lurked in the very trees thought to provide shelter.

Worst of all, the latest earthquake collapsed the explorers’ ship into the earth. After that, Tarticus alerted the Jedi Council to send help, knowing one or two of its members. The Jedi, being who they were, did not hesitate.

Knights Vayla Mirana and Callum Faust answered the call. Their mission was to stabilize the community or ship them out, depending on the threat level, but not before exploring the mountains themselves.

For, with that latest earthquake, the edges of a building were discovered in the rock, and Tarticus was certain of the Force outlining it—light or dark.

The Star’s Sanctum, Vayla’s freighter, ferried the two Knights to Oosalon that morning. It touched down outside Prime Grove, the expedition’s outpost in a forest clearing. “Fresh air,” Vayla announced as the pair of Pantoran and Human descended the ramp.

Prime Grove was a basic building for its purpose, providing all the amenities for explorers while keeping it simple, but there were signs of neglect already against the forested backdrop.

“We should visit with Tarticus right away,” Vayla confirmed. “Mind taking the lead?” She asked Callum, already enthralled in her datapad as it brought up Voyage Now’s discoveries so far.

If he had to admit it, Callum was nervous. He was a lone wolf in many respects and working with others was not his forte, per se. He was nervous, but he would never admit it. The Jedi Order was supposed to have given him a small file of information about the Knight he would be partnering with to accomplish this mission, but they had failed to do so, leaving the young man rather surprised when he finally came face to face with the female Pantoran.

Traveling to Oosalon had proven rather uneventful and aside from discussing the task at hand, the pair had only engaged in short bouts of small talk. Callum was accustomed to keeping to himself and believed that personal revelations ought to be kept as secrets between one's ears, not between acquaintances.

As the freighter made its final descent, the young Knight made a mental checklist of his gear. His attire may not have announced him as a Jedi to the rest of the Galaxy, but he was comfortable and he liked it that way. He gently kicked the heels of his favorite worn boots into the floor of the craft, noting their familiar feel in the back of his mind. The metaphorical and literal weight of the blaster carbine at his right hip and the hilt of the lightsaber at his left did not escape the man. He was as sure as the rising of the suns that there would come a day when one or both of his weapons would come in to use. Would that be today?

"I am working with a chick." Callum thought to himself as he rolled his eyes. The Knight was sure the odds were already against him based on that fact alone. This was not at all how he had envisioned this mission going. A brother in arms, a battle buddy would have met the young man's expectations but Vayla was so....feminine.

"Fresh air," the Pantoran announced as the ship's ramp gave a soft thud on the ground below. Callum was pulled from the depths of his thoughts as he tugged shut the lengthy knit coat around his body and moved past his fellow Jedi. She quickly reminded him of their first objective and that was to visit with a Force sensitive Zabrak named Tarticus. Moments later, Vayla was consumed in her datapad. Callum scoffed, "Typical," he muttered while turning to check the dual comlink navi system on his wrist for a brief set of directions.

At times Callum was completely clueless of his oft rude remarks and views on things, but there were moments when he wondered in the far recesses of his deepest being, if he were not the reason for his unspoken loneliness.

"Sorry. Didn't get much sleep yesterday," the Knight decided to clear the air of the awkward silence growing between he and his partner. Just as the words left his lips he winced and mentally placed a proverbial palm to his forehead. "Real smooth, Cal. Yesterday? You mean, last night?" he thought and then groaned internally as the pair continued walking in silence. The darkness of the forest's canopy was just beginning to swallow up their shadows as they entered the last leg, albeit a dangerous stretch of trail that would lead them to the Prime Grove building.

Her companion’s muttering had not gone unnoticed even though it was ignored. Vayla did not know Callum Faust anymore than he knew Vayla Mirana, and their mission might not be the most exciting for the younger Jedi, but the two would leave this world having come to know each other only the better. There was no doubting it.

“Don’t worry about it,” Vayla smiled. “By the looks and sounds of things, the Voyage Now community doesn’t get much sleep either.” Her eyes widened at the datapad as it listed Species 4-A. “This might be one reason why.” She showed her partner.

“States that they lurk near trees, even hide in treetops, and come out at night. No one has gotten close enough to see what it really looks like.” Vayla gulped. “Not yet, anyway…”

It was potentially an inappropriate time to bring this up now as they were still navigating throughout the forest clearing. But we have Force Sense where our quarry does not.

By Force or fortune, the Jedi Knights reached the outpost in the distance but received no reception. Instead of going straight to the front door, however, Vayla observed the buildings, mapping out the camp’s quarters, research stations, storage facility and the works.

“Look,” she gestured toward Callum. “The windows are boarded up.” That made sense on account of earthquakes; no one wanted glass raining down on them. “Well, shall we?” She then gestured for him to lead the way once more.

“INSIDE!” The cry came from the front entrance of the mess hall attached to crew quarters, the door bursting open and a man standing in the doorway. “GET INSIDE! HURRY!”

Callum leaned in to get a better view of the image on Vayla's datapad and his eyes went wide. He had seen his fair share of strange throughout the Galaxy but a creature like that would certainly take the cake. The young man shook his head as if to erase the image from his memory as he cast a glance around the forested area surrounding them. Was it his mind playing tricks or was there a rustling in the branches overhead? A knot formed in the Knight's throat as his right hand brushed across the blaster carbine at his side.

The Prime Grove building had just come into sight when the Pantoran spoke up. "Look," Vayla gestured for Callum to take notice of the boards across the windows. He thought that it was odd but given the image his partner had just shared with him, he could understand such a precaution. The Knight had no idea what the crew of Voyage Now had been facing, but an ominous feeling was quickly taking hold of the situation and he was certain to soon find out.

"Well, shall we?" the female's words broke through Callum's racing thoughts once again and he nodded while clearing his throat. "I'm sure Tarticus is expecting us," he gave a wry smile and took the lead as before.

Seconds later a man burst through the front door of the outpost and shouted for the pair of Jedi to get inside. Callum's first instinct was to slip into confusion. He was unsure what was being shouted, why it was being shouted and who was doing the shouting. It was as if time stopped for several moments as he slowly turned and looked at Vayla with a helpless expression.

Suddenly a shrill shriek sliced through the cool mountain air like the cry of a banshee across a forgotten boardwalk. Callum's reflexes were on point as he pulled the weapon from his hip and spun on his heal, firing off several rounds from the blaster carbine. The creature that had ambushed the pair from the trees above lashed out at the young man, grazing his cheek with one of its jagged claws as it fell in a heap at his feet.

Callum winced and touched the fresh cut on his cheek. He shot a glance over his shoulder at Vayla and in low tones said only one word: "run."

Not knowing what the man at the door was so terrified over, Vayla did not waste too much time trying to assess the danger. He said go inside and that is where she aimed to go. Too late. She sensed the presence or, rather, should have. Instead, the Knight did not know the creature was there until it shrieked.

Not possible. The thought was futile as Vayla spun to face the calling. Instead of her, the creature went for Callum, tearing a gash across his face. He looked at her, told her to run, but his word was as futile as her thought.

“NO!”
was all she replied with before igniting her saber and charging head-on. The Force was with her even if it was not with that beast. No signature. Those were her last thoughts before the woman and the creature engaged.

A blue blade swiped sideways. The creature leapt back like movement was no contest, narrowly evading the saber. Vayla thrust for its chest. It sidestepped; a single, jerking motion like that of a marionette. Fast! It’s fast!

It was no less agile. The creature spun, and for a moment there Vayla thought it would twirl right into the length of her sword, but it went underneath. What!? It was upon her, a claw of a hand swiping sideways.

Without thinking, the only motion that saved the Knight’s life was her free hand. It shot a push through the Force that sent the monster soaring toward the tree line to smack the bark with its back. But then…there was another shriek…and another… From there…and over there…

More of them!Maybe it was time to run now.
