Between her comments about him being a toddler and her praises of his early talents with the force, Laeonas was a completely incoherent whirlwind of emotion. He laughed, stammered, and at one point he seemed to be on the brink of tears. It was, perhaps, a glimpse at the heart of Laeo's personality-- that being complete emotional volatility, albeit lacking the trademark outbursts of brutal violence he was prone to.

When Celeste suggested he might have been Rattaki, he laughed. "Ai dunno where Ai'm from, 'onest ta deus," he answered. "Mae Ma and da are from Brentaal, my da's parents are from Brentaal, and mae ma's parents are from Brentaal... Ai guess Ai'm just from Brentaal." He declared, before throwing up his hands. "Kriff does anyone go ta Zeltros? Go'ta Brentaal, 'ome t'tha galaxy's prettiest man!" he exclaimed, cackling. It was partly a joke, and it was partly true.

With the eccentricities coming to an end, they'd both say their goodbyes, and he would hit the sack.

--------

"Laeo!"

He blinked, turning on his heels. He didn't recognize that voice, cocking an eyebrow as a young woman walked over to him. "...can I help you?" He'd ask, before squinting. "Did I see you in the bar last night?" He asked. The girl smirked, before nodding. "Yes, you put on quite a show. Celeste wants to see you-- it's a matter of planetary security." She explained. "...how, exactly?" He replied, bewildered.

"I'll explain the basics, but we ought not to waste time. C'mon, Celeste is waiting." She declared, turning on her heels and beginning to walk back from where she came, waving for him to follow. It didn't take long before Laeo had a brief of the situation, and he was surprised, to say the least.

When he entered the office, Laeo's face was difficult to read, a mix of conflicting expressions. Surprise, the slightest hint of indignation, a heavy bit of amusement-- and some excitement. "When I said I owed you a favor or two, I didn't expect you to cash it in like this." He declared, and the naked anticipation in his voice told her exactly how he felt.

"I mean, shit. I've spent weeks doing nothing but working out, meditating and reading from dead philosophers. Last night was the last time I even tried hitting someone in... God, weeks? Months? I can't even tell anymore." He declared, before chuckling, before he paused.

"Though... I was way to hasty to get violent, and you uh, didn't really deserve any of that."
He said, cocking his head. "This guy, he's... he's bad, right?"

Celeste was pacing back and forth, scribbling notes into her holopad and readying both a transport and the equipment they'd need. Laeonas owed her one, but she was not actually planning on making this count. She simply rather wanted to ask a new found friend for help. If the two of them could simply sneak in and mess with him, she'd save them all plenty of trouble and so an idea slowly began to form in her head.

It didn't take long until, she heard steps resounding from the corridor outside. She put away the tablet and Force pulled a bottle of fresh desert fruit juice close before she poured it into the two glasses on the table. She greeted Laeo with a grin and immediately offered him one of the glasses until a chuckle followed. "Good morning to you too. Have some juice, it's a great handover cure" she amusedly declared with a smirk, making her way over to the desk to grab a map.

"I'm sorry for calling you in today. I just received some unpleasant news that urgently require my attention. There's trouble in the east and well...you seem capable, you've proven that, so I could use a hand". She explained rather directly, taking a sip of the chilled juice before she put the glass down, her light blue eyes meeting his aquamarine orbs.

She was indeed sorry as she was assuming he was still struggling with the aftereffects of the alcohol poisoning, but she really needed another force sensitive fighter right away. "This guy is indeed bad. Really bad. Still holds onto slavery and human trafficking, rules with fear and is tyrannical as ever. It's about time we persuade him to lay down his arms". If he wouldn't let himself be persuaded, they might need force. He was actually someone who deserved such violent measures though. "Are you in? Don't feel obligated to say yes. The task might be dangerous and we might not make it out unscathed". She was being honest about that as she didn't want to make any false promises.

It was a relief to see that, however dire the situation was, Celeste was still wearing her typically positive expression. When she offered a cure for his non existent hangover, he waved it aside. "Oh, I took care of all that already," He declared, before glancing down at the glass. He did feel a little thirsty. "Though I guess a drink wouldn't hurt." The man added, snatching up the glass and taking a sip.

As she explained the situation, Laeonas paced back and forth, sipping on his juice, nodding along. "Good. I'm not interested in fighting someone I think's a prick and them turning out decent for at least another two weeks. One's all I can handle for now." He joked, seeming to make light of the situation.

In truth, the petty tyrant Celeste described was the kind he was intimately familiar with. In his days as a two bit gangster, men like Odobrus-- Ododus-- Oddcrus-- whatever he was called-- were a crown a dozen. Men and women whose only redeeming quality was their strength, and who used that advantage to squeeze and dominate and extract as much profit out of those beneath them regardless of the human cost.

Every gangboss Laeo had served was in some form or another, scum, but the level of depravity varied from individual to individual. Men like... this guy, were disturbingly common-- but fortunately for Laeo, that had meant he'd been able to freely and enthusiastically maim, butcher, drive by, shoot, cripple, and perform every violation imaginable on the men and women who served such bosses, while only losing a moderate amount of sleep over it.

"I mean, I've learned a lot about how everyone's carrying a different shade of grey or whatever, but after months of meditating and philosophizing... I mean, shit, can't a guy just stab another guy without having to worry if that makes him a bad person?" Laeo asked, which actually prompted a chuckle from the girl who'd collected him just minutes ago. The Rattataki's love of violence was matched by their black humor.

"I mean, holy shit, slavery? When we're done with this guy's henchman I wanna finish him off myself. I haven't made worm food out of shacklers in ages." He went on, before flashing Celeste a grin. "When are we heading out?"

When he first kindly refused the hangover cure, she cocked her head to the side. Oh she would almost insist he'd drink that as he needed those micronutrients and minerals badly after yesterday. His liver was probably still half dead and it would be weeks until it would fully recover, however now that Laeonas had socialized with the Rattataki, she was assuming he'd head back there sooner or later after all and she wouldn't be able to stop him then anyway. "Good...you may find the taste interesting" she cautiously warned him, grinning wryly as she watched him sip, preparing to hand him the details.

His joke make her laugh and she amusedly shook her head as she pulled out her datapad and sent a few messages to let their transport get prepared. "Don't worry. He won't surprise us" she told him as she waited for him to finish the drink. They were in not a particular rush, although they had to leave within the next hour and they has to come prepared.

While Stetti loved at Laeo's joke, Celeste remained silence. If he mediated and philosophized, how could be come to such a conclusion? She stood in the door frame, pondering on that thought for a moment. There were ruthless people that truly deserved no mercy, but what had yesterday taught him? That murdering wasn't always such a clever idea, because impressions were often prejudiced. She left it uncommented and focused on the latter question instead. Slavery was something that had to be stopped, yes exactly, and those guys were not ones to negotiate. "As soon as you grab your stuff we can get going". She drummed against the door frame with her fingernails, creating a mental list of stuff she'd have to grab in a minute.

The taste was... stronger than he expected, and the man visibly shuddered. Still, he continued sipping, enjoying the taste as it properly woke him up. "I should hope not-- I've been sparring with Rattataki for months now. If I can still get surprised, I'm doing something wrong." He answered, grinning as he sat down.

His joke seemed to have gone over well with Celeste's assistant, but she herself seemed... concerned, to say the least. Laeonas' own expression hardened at that, and he added, "I mean, some bastards just need punishing, y'know? Obviously you can't be to hasty, but Gods, there's gotta be a point where you can just stop feeling bad and start kicking ass." He elaborated, before flashing another grin. "I mean, you're not going to tell me there's anything ambiguous about punishing a bunch of slavers, right?"

"Who am I kidding-- you didn't invite me here for philosophizing, so I already know your answer." He finished, before promptly standing. "I'm going to head back to my ship-- grab any weapons I might need, throw on a bit of war paint-- have a bit of fun while we're at it!"

With that, Laeo stood up, and ducked under Celeste's arm as he began the walk back to his ship. Soon enough, they'd be off.

There was still something within Celeste that made her a little hesitant. Laeonas wasn't the most stable person, that was for sure, and despite their fun night out and the change of events, she didn't fully trust him. He might have figured out how she wasn't a bad human, yet there was still no insurance on him not changing his mind once again or simply being an excellent liar. She trusted him quite a bit, but she decided to keep her eyes opennd stay on her guard, especially because the mission wasn't supposed to be an easy one and despite him owing her a favor, she was about to pull him into one of the battles she alone was fighting.

She drifted off into thoughts for a moment until she focused on the actual conversations they were having. "No...no I promise. No twists. He's a bastard, brutal, violent and nothing but a lying piece of shit" she replied, gaze directed onto Laeo. "But yes. Thanks. I'll grab the rest of my stuff and meet you at the shuttle outside. Try to pack lightly as we'll try sneaking in" she advised him, a faint smile on her lips before she watched him leave, said her goodbyes to Stetti and hurried to the storage room herself. She'd meet him at the ship just a few minutes later, all combat ready in light armor, her lightsaber and a blaster amongst an assortment of grenades and vials containing paralytic poison and a set of throwing knives. She'd wait for him before she would board the ramp but was already determining the exact coordinates on her datapad. The moment he'd walk over to meet her again, she'd eye him readily. "Last chance to say no" she teased, knowing that neither he'd say no nor she would accept it without a discussion.

"Bastard? Hey, we've got something in common!" Laeo quipped, a grin spreading across his lips before he realized he hadn't even told Celeste about his birth, and thus his internal context made no sense to her. Perhaps she'd think he'd just said he was also a terrible person, which to an extent was true--

"Aight, shut up." He thought to himself, quickly ducking under the woman's arm and speeding off towards his ship.

When he came back, he had all his usual gear equipped-- his vibrosword, his blaster right, basic combat fatigues and jacket-- all the things he carried on him when he was ready to start breaking bodies. When he met up with Celeste again, he flashed her a grin. "Been awhile since I fought alongside a Sith." he teased, slipping up onto the ramp with her. When she offered him an out as a joke, he just smiled again. "Please, I wouldn't miss this for the world."

Celeste was satisfied with his willingness to come with her and deal with the rebellious scum bag, yet she would keep a close eye on him. If he was o betray her after all, this was a perfect chance for him, so she'd stay on her guard.

"Very well then" she replied, walking up the ramp with him before she gave the pilot droid the coordinates before she gestured for him to follow her to the common room. He still needed a briefing, even if there wasn't too much to tell.

"Okay...so we've got a bit of a flight ahead of us and we'll stop a bit off to walk the rest as we need to catch them by surprise a little". As it was already noon, the timing would be quite fitting and they could sneak their way in at sunset.

"Do you have experience when it comes to such ambushes? We shouldn't already the guards while getting in, but once inside, we can unleash everything we have on them". They wouldn't have to be subtle then and they had to strike quickly, but it didn't sound like the warlord was expecting her to act already.

As the two ascended and Laeo found a place to sit, Celeste would call his attention as she started briefing him about the specifics of their plan. "Catch them by surprise... a little." The Brentaalan muttered, nodding along. Her terminology was... odd, but he wasn't about to start criticizing.

"I... do, actually." Laeo recalled. "I think I was 16 or 17, nine or ten months before I left home. Me and the guys and gals had this drive by planned out for when these other pricks were going down Alexionad avenue--" the Brentaalan began, before realizing he was trailing off.

"...but yeah, I've got experience with recon, and with setting ambushes. Obviously an urban environment is different from where we're headed, but it's the principle of it that matters." He went on. He'd hardly expected to wind up doing a job interview before an op like this, but here he was.

"So, sneak in, avoid immediate discovery, than once we're safe inside, we tear 'em to pieces. Did I get that right?"

As he started to tell his little story, she couldn't help but to chuckle about the way he immediately trailed off. It sounded like he had an interesting youth, but it was definitely good that he had some experience with this. "Now that sounds interesting. Did you manage to pull it off though? she wanted to know, taking a sip from the chilled drink.

"Precisely. They might not be prepared yet or even assumed I'd strike that directly and at such an early point" she concluded, giving him a little smirk as she leaned back, exhaling. "Thank you for coming along". Even if he owed her something, she was grateful.

Their shuttle swiftly hovered through the air, all across the vast, barren, rocky desert. If he'd glance outside, there wouldn't be much he would spy apart from huge rock formations and dried desert plants.

"Oh, totally-- gunned every one of those fuckers down, than crucifi..." He began trailing off, eyes widening as he suddenly remembered he was talking to a foreigner and not another Brentaalan gangster. "...we uh, we won. Yeah. It worked out. They did have an acid thrower though, and it did leave a really, REALLY nasty scar on my shoulder." He went on, trying his best to gloss over his earlier comment.

Celeste's comment about preparations prompted a shrug from Laeo. "I'd be surprised if they've even bothered preparing." He said, adding, "This guy has openly and very directly said he's not taking orders from Kat anymore, which means he either thinks he can fight off retaliation and win, or he thinks you won't retaliate at all." Laeo declared.

"That means he's one of three things: completely prepared and ready for whatever Kat and you can throw at him, underprepared, since he's, y'know, sure that he can beat the most powerful warlord on this planet," he added, emphasizing the fact that this guy was more likely overconfident and stupid than a tactical genius, "Or, like I said, he doesn't think we'll retaliate at all."

Laeo concluded his analysis with a smirk, before it quickly turned to a frown. "I mean... I'm assuming this guy thinks exactly like one of the gangbosses or capos back home." The man concluded, tapping his foot. "I mean, it's not that dissimilar-- gangbosses and their men are kinda like warlords and their soldiers." He observed, pursing his lips and turning back to Celeste.

"You've been here longer than I have, and Kat obviously trusts you with an operation like this-- how do the Rattataki actually make war?"

As Laeo started rambling on she couldn't help to smirk over his enthusiasm, leading to her shaking her head amusedly. The man and his...particularly interesting past was willing to share plenty of stories, yet he then stopped himself and focused on the main parts before wrapping his little side note with the acid attack.

"Your childhood wasn't boring after all" she remarked, leaning back and taking another sip before Laeo shared his thoughts on their endeavor. "Yes. The cocky old bastard will think he's safe for now".

"So you're not wrong. He also knows about out fleet so he might be expecting something big. Possible scouts might not be too alerted by smaller vessels" she mused, however taking another mental note. Theystill had to be careful and not rely on those assumptions. Worst case scenario would be if he was just waiting, but reinforcement would be close by.

As he adressed her with his question again, small chuckle escaped her. "Ugly...violent, brutal, bloody" she answered, letting out a sight. "This is not war though. This is another rebellious scumbag who thinks he stands a chance. Every clever warlord bent the knee due to knowing they can't oppose the main forces...but there are always some who step out of line. Knowing him, he might have even done it out of spite. It was about time he's been dealt with". Judging from his narratives, he had been in similar situations though, so he was no stranger to meaningless dick waving attempts.

Celeste didn’t seem bothered by his colorful exposition, much to his relief. Laeo didn’t want his ally mistrusting him before the fighting started– that was a surefire way to wind up dead. Thankfully, as far as she was concerned, he’d just told an entertaining story– nothing more.

“I did a lot during my childhood-- boredom wasn’t a frequent visitor.” He remarked, smirking. As she elaborated on what to expect, he nodded along. “He's expecting us to attack in the open, with massive force? He wouldn’t last a week back home.” He declared. The closest Brentaalan gangs got to open war was hit and run attacks like the one Laeo had described. Most fighting involved small groups– targeted assassinations, drive by’s, ambushes, or if they were feeling particularly lazy, a bribe to the local police force which would bring the proverbial hammer down.

By the way Celeste described it, it sounded as if the Rattataki didn’t embrace the subtleties that his own people did. He wasn’t surprised; in an urban environment like the one where he grew up, open, mass slaughter was something the police or lords of his worlds couldn’t just turn a blind eye towards. Here, they could slaughter each other in the open, without worry as to some higher authority coming down on them– at least, that was the status quo until Kat had rocked up and conquered a huge chunk of the planet.

“Some people don’t take orders well. I’d sympathize, but I’ve never had to be ordered not to own people.” Laeo commented, before a frown spread across his lips. “But, bravado aside– there’s no chance this guy could win if Kat actually brought the hammer down.” He said, before his frown deepened.

If he’s bold enough to pull something like this off when it’s obviously a bad idea, Kat’s not going to be able to rely on the common sense of her warlords to ensure loyalty.” Laeo concluded, biting his lip. “It won’t be enough to beat this guy– if the rest of these warlords have half as much bravado, they’ll always think they’ll be the ones who can win. It won’t be enough for them to know someone who rebelled was beaten.”

He let the statement hang in the air for a moment, allowing Celeste to draw whatever conclusions she wished. Laeo wasn’t about to suggest anything drastic, and he wasn’t about to endorse anything… especially brutal. A man better than the one he had been upon his exile wouldn’t suggest defiling corpses.

But, if it meant stopping rebellions– preventing needless deaths… then, well…

“All I’m saying is, we are killing this guy, right?”

Through their little chat, time seemed to fly and they were already about to approach the landing area from where they'd have to walk in a few minutes. "Yeah I bet...it also sounds like you didn't get many breaks either" she remarked, her lips turning into a smirk that was half amused, half almost apologetic. It was no surprise he was so...well, fucked up from certain angles, but it seemed like now be was at least rather stable now.

In terms of his assessment she replied with an agreeing nod, knowing that the main forces would probably manage to shatter them all, yet this wasn't so easy. "Now that's exactly where things get interesting. If he's feeling super confident, he won't expect a quick answer anyway. He has waved his dick around and might expect that he has managed to intimidate us for now, but this underestimation will end fatally for him" Her gaze drifted towards the viewport for a moment before she faced him again.

"They don't value subtleties, yet it will allow us to gain the upper hand. They won't notice us slipping in and then we can unleash hellfire on them" she declared, thus hinting at how this was also a little about reputation. "Maybe some of his men will even be clever enough to hide or run. It's not likely, but they'll at least die while realizing they have chosen the wrong side. The weak side". She turned back to him as they were already about to make their descent.

"Yes" she finally explained, "There's no reason to take him alive. He'll cause nothing but more trouble and he'll never obey the new rules". They could still mess with him mentally, but here on Rattatak, Celeste wasn't usually doing such things unless needed. Still, for him it made no sense at all. "I hope you don't think that isn't justified. I swear I don't turn to such extreme measures unless it's necessary".

With that, she ensured that all her gear was where it should be and expected him to do the same. "Are you ready?". The ship would then slow down and quietly land, which would then allow them to alight and get going. The sun was already relatively low on the horizon and the air dropping to more pleasant temperatures while dusk would soon set.

Laeonas absorbed Celeste’s response to his analysis with quiet contemplation, his lips pursed in a thin as the two bounced their perspectives off of one another. It was clear that she agreed with his perspective. More than that, she saw the kinds of vulnerabilities that they could exploit during their mission. Based on her suggestions regarding hellfire, it was clear she felt similarly about the need to intimidate these people.

He felt a need to pause as she spoke of how their enemies would die knowing they’d chosen wrong. A part of him he tried to ignore eagerly agreed, that part that delighted in placing his boot on the throats of those “beneath” him. “What they think doesn’t matter if they’re dead– it does if they’re alive.” He chimed.

“This prick and those who choose to follow him need to be made an example of, and I know you agree. If there are people who’d rather surrender, however…” Laeonas began to suggest, before pausing. “I’m not going yellow! I’m not gonna ask every prick who points a blaster at me if they want to drop it or anything. I just think it’d provide a stronger message if we gave people the option to surrender.” The man clarified.

“Brutality is one thing, and it has its place– I have a few suggestions in particular about what we do to this boss-man once we’ve got him in our clutches,” the man suggested, not lingering on it for long as he continued, “But showing any potential rebels that they’ll be given mercy if they quit before taking up arms is a pretty great deterrent as well.”

“Hell, if we show the people that they’ll die no matter what, they’ll probably fight harder.”
Laeo suggested. He wasn’t sure if that was true on Rattatak, but he’d always fought like hell against the gangs he knew would put a bolt between his skull even if he begged.

When she brought up the rebel leaders’ death, however, all thoughts of mercy or clemency vanished. “You won’t find me arguing.” He answered. Despite all his talk of surrender and forgiveness, there was no room for that here. Forgiving a grunt was a sign of compassion– forgiving a ringleader was a sign of weakness.

Besides, the man was a slaver. He’d have had half a mind to kill him even if he wasn’t a rebel.

As the ship drew closer to the surface, he readied himself, taking a few deep, even breaths.

“Ready.” He answered.

Celeste had already noticed how Laeonas was the right man for the risky task at hand. He'd have to be uncompromising were they had to instead of shying away from it. "I agree...they've all made their choice. Once they hear or see us, they can still run. Those that decide to fire will be dealt with accordingly. They've all violated our former shared agreements and the tribal rules as well". He still had to know the rules they played by, thus she had still clarified their point of standing.

"Of course though. If they'd agree to surrender, we can show them mercy. Just don't expect too much please. The Rattataki aren't known for taking such things into consideration. For them it's often fight and die. Surrender is considered a cowardly thing". She shrugged, before she glanced over one last time, checking her gear once again before nodding.

"Very well. Let's go" with that, she gestured for him to follow her as she started leading them into a canyon. She wouldn't speak unless Laeo would raise another question, but would them immediately caution him to choose telepathy instead.

They sneaked through a rather narrow passage - a way forced by masses of water that had run across those fields centuries ago. They'd soon be led up a slope again and Celeste would be pleased about it as she had only spied this way in from above so far. Dawn was about to set and so the arriving night would cloak them in Darkness well enough for the scouts to mistake them for some animals, she presumed.

Choosing telepathy, she checked in with her companion after a while, ensuring that he was fine before actually nearing the precarious parts. 'You okay? We'll now move away from seclusion and need to make a run for it. There's an underground garage for deliveries of food and stuff. It's usually not sealed, but while we climb down and then start running, we need to be careful to avoid getting caught before we even start'.

Laeo would nod along as Celeste provided the final tidbits of information she provided. He was trying his best to balance mercy with the grim reality that they were about to kill dozens. “Got it.” He answered, steeling himself as he prepared. “Emotion, yet peace. Ignorance, yet knowledge. Passion, yet Serenity. Death, yet the Force.” He whispered, drawing in a deep breath as he prepared. He let the last line repeat a few times before started after his partner.

Quietly, the two of them would make their way through the canyon. The dusklight was all that kept the landscape from being consumed by inky blackness; it would’ve taken a keen eye for Kat’s servants to be spotted by the rebels. His eyes remained fixed on the distant camp, trying to notice any signs on whether or not they’d been spotted. He breathed a sigh of relief as Celeste guided him into the small cavern. No alarms, no wayward searchlights. So far, they were undetected.

The two of them eventually found their way up a ridge. Laeo made sure he was especially careful as his boots dug into the inclined stone, barely making a sound as he followed after Celeste. There was some noise; the crunching of dirt, the spilling of pebbles on the cliffside. It was nothing the guards wouldn’t have heard a thousand times from desert vermin or even just the shifting of the winds.

He was startled when Celeste’s voice pierced his mind, jumping a little as his eyes darted from side to side; focusing in on his companion’s lips and widening when he saw that they failed to open. “Fine!” He snapped at her in his mind, taking deep breathes as he crouched out of sight. “Ai’m… Ai’m fine.” He answered, before letting out a sigh. “Next time ya wanna take a dive inta mae gray matter, gimme some advanced notice, will ya?” He telepathically called to her.

He listened as she explained their plan and what they needed to do. Climb down, run, don’t get caught. It seemed easy enough; years spent evading security forces through the spaceports of Cormond left him well prepared for something like this. “Cimb down, run, stay hidden. Got it.” The man telepathically reiterated. He couldn’t remember the last time anyone had communicated with him like this, or if this was the first time ever. The sensation of thoughts passing into and out of his mind and exchanging them with another was odd, but it was a simple thing to pick up on.

With that, Laeo would begin the descent into the garage, climbing down slowly and methodically to avoid making much noise. He wasn’t used to climbing up or down rock; he was far more experienced with pipes, guard rails and fire escapes than raw Earth. Using the force to cushion his fall, he landed with a barely audible tap on the ground.

The garage was dimly lit. All around them were a variety of crates, marked and labeled with foodstuffs. Perhaps Celeste would be gracious enough to let him plunder the camp’s fuel reserves so he could finally leave this planet.
