The recording starts, the complete image of a red-haired woman in her mid-twenties appears. She is clad in mostly black athletic gear. Her skin, if the playback device being used allows for such detail, is glistening from perspiration. Her eyes are a blunt, deep green. Her lips are bright red and skin a light bronze. Her face is determined and unrelenting. She speaks in a thick accent and subtitles scroll across the screen as she speaks in rough basic. “Force barrier, I first heard this technique referred to as Force shield. I was looking forward to learning how to block blaster bolts, force lightning, and lightsabers with a personal shield. Turns out those are the upper limits of this skill. One that is not hard to learn, but a pain to master. Literally. I’ve taken who knows how many remote bolts just in the past couple hours. I guess I’ll explain the process, the aspects and all the boring stuff before I show you what I’ve learned so far.”

The woman, known to some as Padawan Ya’el Mera, adjusts her hair, its wavy tendrils always creep around from behind her ears. “So far I’ve felt no draw or attraction to the dark side while using this power, though I can’t say it’s bolstered by use of the light side either. I’ve also been able to form a force barrier around the remote itself as opposed to around myself. This takes a little more concentration but is no more difficult to master. I have noticed a slight curiosity. At times my barrier is a translucent deep ocean blue. Other times it is simply a shimmer, a ripple in the air. And even on occasion, completely invisible. I’ve yet to find a link between my actions and the appearance of the barrier, but I have a feeling there is one.”

She stopped and cleared her throat. She wasn’t used to talking this much, and certainly not in Basic. But this was a useful skill that could save scores of lives. She was quite awed by the fact that it hadn’t been restored to the Jedi Archives until now. “So far I’ve only repelled rocks and remote bolts. But I’ve heard stories of objects as large as rockets, and as small as sound being blocked out by these shields. I don’t feel there are any exaggerations to in the records I’ve been told. Just searching the ‘net brought up historical videos of a cab seemingly being blown to bits, but when the smoke cleared, not even a scratch.”

Ya’el rolled her neck. Now for the fun part. “Ok. So, you can think about it two ways. The first is much easier to learn….but harder to achieve powerful shields. The second, obviously, is the opposite. So the first. Picture the shield radiating out from yourself. Stretch out your hands and envision the force flowing through you and out into a barrier around you.”

There was a faint shimmer in the air around her and she held the barrier for around fifteen second before letting it go. She was strained and her skin glistened even more than before. “Now, this method is super draining. You’re projecting the shield yourself, instead of using the energy around yourself. This is much more difficult to master if you’re too closed minded. You have to imagine everything around you. Piece it together and form it into a shield.”

She did so as she talked and even the casual observer could see that this method was much less taxing physically. However, after another fifteen seconds she dropped the shield and began panting. “I always forget to breathe. The amount of concentration it takes is greater, but makes the move less strength intensive. So, just play around with it a bit. I’ve been practicing for nearly a week straight now. A few full powered bolts end up shattering my barrier, but I’m getting better. There is much more to this power than is detailed here. Blocking a lightsaber has to take something more than blocking a blaster bolt…right?”

The picture dropped out and the holorecording ended.

((OOC: I hope I did this right....))
