DESCRIPTION
The Geophysic-class science cruiser is a research/survey vessel manufactured by the venerable Domel-Berger Yards corporation, primarily marketed to and used by universities, as well as various state-run and private sector research agencies. Geophysics are renowned for being sturdy, well appointed and versatile, configurable for a variety of roles, from a supporting archaeological expeditions to conducting coronal research on high-intensity stars.

The Geophysic is a fairly large vessel, 380 meters in length. Despite this, it can operate with a crew of around 40 people, owing to a high degree of automation and an overall efficient design. It has space for up to 80 passengers, plus up to 4,000 standard tons of cargo, which can range from provisions to vehicles to highly sensitive scientific instruments. In order to facilitate the pursuit of knowledge by those aboard, the ship is outfitted with 20 configurable laboratory spaces, which can be used for everything from artifact preservation to high-energy physics research with the right equipment installed. Finally, the ship is equipped with a sophisticated launch and recovery system for probe droids, able to be adapted for whatever custom or special-purpose hardware an expedition may need to deploy. Telemetry from the probes can be viewed and processed, and control signals sent, from a dedicated suite located nearby.

Geophysic-class science cruisers, though not even remotely intended as warships, are equipped with weapons and hangar space. The ship can carry up to 8 starfighter-sized craft - typically small research skiffs or starhoppers - as well as 4 shuttles or similarly sized craft. Armament consists of twin dual medium laser turrets, located 1 each dorsal and ventral, meant primarily for fending off space debris, although they work just as well against pirates. There is also an array of 4 tractor beams. The ship's hull is composed of heavy duranium plating, and it is also equipped with high-powered deflector shields, meant to better resist the effects of any hazardous phenomena the ship may be called upon to investigate.

Geophysic-class science cruisers are well liked by researchers across the Galaxy, although they are quite expensive. Even well-off universities typically only have a handful in their research fleets.

LEGALITY
Legal. Geophysic-class science cruisers are civilian craft, and their use is unrestricted in most systems.

INTENT
To create an example of a science vessel for our setting.

RESTRICTIONS
Geophysic-class science cruisers are legal to own, but are extremely scarce and expensive, being beyond the means of most individuals. These vessels may be used as faction assets, or can be operated by a group of at least 3 player characters who work together regularly.
