Hyperspace

Inside a ship’s quarters stood a young human. He stared into his reflection within a mirror. Staring back was intense brown eyes with a fierce and defiant expression to match it. His short hair was raven colored and the side of his left cheek bore a jagged yet faded scar that sorta resembled a bent forefinger pointed upwards toward the nose. Just above the upper lip was a thin mustache that stretched from one end to the other.

Done with the examination the man looked down at the attire he wore.

First was the small cloak of silver theme that wrapped around his neck and covered the upper half of the left arm. Underneath a black long sleeved shirt with the chest area containing a grayish side holster. Both hands were worn black gloves that hid the old bruises on both knuckles. His pants were darkened with a silver unity belt. The pants’ lower half were claimed by old dust marks that never left accompanied by shadow styled boots that showed common usage but were otherwise still in good condition.

Strapped to the back from out of sight was his vibro-blade in a sheath. In the holster was an A-180 blaster and the belt contained most of his other gear. Once sure that he was ready he picked up his metal visor helmet from a nearby desk and held it to his right hip. With that he walked out the quarters with the engines humming softly in the midst of lightspeed.

The shadow cloaked man rather enjoyed the sound, reminding him of how far he has gone and now had. Quickly the sensation became bittersweet when his thoughts turned back to what he had to leave behind in order to do so.

The only way is forward, not backwards.

Without warning a woman’s voice shouted ahead from the cockpit.

“Ryū are you done yet? We don’t have all rotation to wait ya know.”

Scowling initially at the interruption, Kasai Ryū grunted before smirking in amusement. Without further hesitation he walked down the hallways, with each step thudding the floor. Around a minute later Ryū came into the cockpit.

At the pilot’s seat was a Zabrak woman with tan skin, long brown hair wrapped in a single ponytail in the back of the head that reached down to the neck. She had four vertical horns, two slightly above the forehead and each flanked by another horn that gave the appearance of a crown. Her eyes were orange and the face bore similar colored tattoos that symbolizes a rancor’s head. For attire she had a brown vest with a blue short sleeved shirt and matching pants and boots.

Having been occupied with checking the ship systems, Verti turned to give Ryū a look over before chuckling.

“Took you long enough. With that kind of delay I would believe I was waiting on with a holostar not a bounty hunter.”

Rolling his eyes he answered. “Keep talking Verti. If I’m to intimidate targets or threats I need to make an impression.”

“Not everyone is going to fall for it Ryū.”

“True but that will be their mistake.”

Sighing, Verti shook her head. Her husband had something of a dramatic trait ever as long as she knew him. Looking out the viewpoint she remarked.

“You’re not lacking confidence and that is necessary in this line of work. Just remember holostar it’s a big galaxy and there is always someone stronger or more powerful out there. Usually they wield lightsabers.”

Sitting down in the copilot’s seat Ryū shrugged his shoulders.

“Life is a challenge in itself, Verti. I wouldn’t have it in any other way.”

A snort escaped Verti as she proceeded to press a button with a mechanical whine a hologram displayed an asteroid station.

“Fostar Station, our first destination. It’s not Nar Shaddaa but it has enough trouble for us to find work.”

Nodding Ryū then asked his partner.

“Any bounties that stand out to you?”

Verti answered with the flip of a switch and the hologram transformed showing a Gran male grinning nervously while holding racing tickets.

“Klaf Reekz, a genius accountant who used to work on Canto Bight until he scammed mountains off creds from his former employers and their customers. I was able to learn that a Gran matching his description arrived on the station four rotations ago. He went by the name Cos Mos and was last seen in the workers’ district. The reward is twelve thousand credits to bring him back to Canto Bight alive.”

Raising an eyebrow, Ryū thought. That’s hardly a challenge worth our time. As if sensing what he is thinking Verti retorted.

“We got to start somewhere even with a lowly womp rat. Besides that sector is crawling with gangs so take this seriously.”

“Okay, okay I get the point Ve. You don't need to gut me further about it.”

Smirking with a muffled chuckle his spouse leaned over to kiss and they did. They shared a knowing smile in silence saying nothing else. Then the console beeped, alerting them that they’re nearing their destination. Verti pulled a lever and the ship came out of hyperspace.

Before them was Fostar Station, still active after generations with turrets at the ready. Slowly the D50 Mantis made its approach.

Ryū got up from the ship and made an exit from the cockpit as they were being hailed by the stationmaster. Verti can handle that, he trusted her with his life. Along the way he went into the armory and got out his A280C rifle and loaded it in a fresh power cell before using its sling to fit it behind his shoulders.

“We’re about to dock, get ready, holostar.” Verti announced cheekily.

Grunting some more Ryū murmured.

“She doesn’t pull punches and is unashamed of it. Another thing I love about her.”

Subsequently he headed to the ramp just as he felt the vessel shake momentarily. They had landed. Upon that realization Kasai Ryu put on his visor helmet and its HUD immediately went online. Moments later the ramp before him opened hissing steam and he proceeded to walk down with confident steps.

The hunt was on!

Fostar Station, Workers’ District, Level 40

An aging elevator jolted to a stop and the door slide opened only half way. Not bothering to push it further, Ryū exited from there. Even with helmet filters he can smell the rot somewhat and it didn’t faze him a bit. Instead the bounty hunter paused to survey what was before him. A large crowded ghetto for workers to labor against the asteroid their home was built upon and for galactic exiles to linger until they left the station one way or another.

Meters from him some beings begged sitting down up against a wall with hands out. Some just wallowed in their sorrows. Others for various reasons ignored them going about their own affairs in different directions. A few souls glanced at him passing by but otherwise didn’t really care unless he made something of it. That suited the hunter just fine.

From out his hidden pocket he drew forth a tracking fob. Ryū winced somewhat remembering how he almost forgot it when leaving the ship.

Verti nearly tore my head off for that and I don’t blame her.

He directed the fob around till it beeped, letting him know his quarry was here. Now certain Ryū made his way to the left lane, following the signal. This continued for a few minutes before being forced to make a right turn up some steps. The signal remained consistent yet weak, meaning he still had a bit of distance to go. Reaching the top of the steps Ryū noted makeshift shops and stalls on both sides as their occupants plied for their trade or bratered with customers.

Paying no further attention to any of it Ryū resumed his march. He maneuvered around various beings who were going their own ways. In the midst of this Ryū’s highly attuned hearing picked up steps behind him but in a clumsy stalking manner. Pretending to be unaware and to test the waters he allowed himself to bump into a passing middle aged human salvager in makeshift gear. For the briefest moment he noted out of the corner of his visor a Sullustan male in a faded green miner’s outfit.

The scum is tailing me.

Swifty he moved on as the man he bumped into cursed at him. Paying it no mind but rather the would-be spy Ryū came up with a solution. He kept up the charade of being unaware before making a sudden left turn into an alleyway. Stacking himself to the corner of the wall behind him, Ryū didn’t have to wait long before the stalker ran after him. Just as soon as he was within reach Ryū threw his right leg out and the Sullustan tripped, crashing face first to the floor.

Moaning, the alien had no time to comprehend when he was dragged up the collar and his back slammed to the wall. Finally his large mouse-like eyes looked upon in horror the visor inches from him.

“Why are you following me?!” Ryū demanded through his helmet’s filters that gave off a deep menacing tone.

At the question the Sullustan stammered a denial.

“N-n-no it’s not what you think—

Without hesitation Ryū drew his pistol and pointed it at the man’s face.

“Why were you tailing? I won’t ask again.”

Sweating and turning pale, the Sullustan became even more frightened, exclaiming.

“Hey man, I'm just making a living! Wasn’t going to rob ya just keep an eye on you that’s all.”

Realizing that’s not enough of an explanation he went on.

“I joined a gang recently and the boss is paying me to watch newcomers. Good creds if they prove to be trouble or useful.”

Ryū couldn’t care less about this informant’s fortunes or that of his boss. In that moment he felt the strong urge to knock out this punk and leave him to rot for interrupting his hunt. It would serve the punk right to face whatever trouble from failing his job. Yet the bounty hunter held himself back and thought.

Perhaps this can be an opportunity.

Keeping the gun level at the increasingly nervous Sullustan he demanded.

“What’s your name and who is your boss?”

“…Tet Yan and I answer to Darcen Ro of the Durasteel League.”

In the back of his mind Ryū dryly noted. With his kind of brains I’m surprised he could spell that last part.

Instead he lowered the blaster but tightened his hold on the collar even, causing Tet to squirm some in pain and but mostly fear. With the point made Ryū finally let go before saying.

“Take me to your boss.”

More than twenty minutes later…

Tet Yan nervously rubbed his hands as he walked ahead with Ryū behind him. They were approaching the open gate of a massive ruined factory. Despite the conditions the bounty hunter could hear the roars and cheerings coming from inside. Awaiting at the gate was a pair of guards both Klatooinians wearing green like Tet. Unlike the latter they were confident and armed with scatter guns.

Seeing one of their own bring a total stranger with him put the guards immediately on edge. The one on the right snarled as Tet gulped before raising both arms.

“Guys, guys he’s with him. Business with Ro.”

“That’s not saying much Tet. Ya screwed up again I can tell.” The first guard retorted. Wincing Tet sighed before countering.

“Cmon Bitt, let us in. Ro can decide for himself if this outsider is a waste of time or not. Or you think better than our boss.”

Taken aback at the counter-argument, Bitt then gritted his fangs in frustration and embarrassment. In the end though he and his partner got out of the way. Ryū and Tet made their way past the sentries although they could hear Bitt murmur Klatooinian curses behind their backs. Needless to say the bounty hunter was kinda impressed with how the Sullustan stood up to his fellow gang-members despite their obvious contempt for him. Probably got some backbone somewhere in that spine after all.

“Don’t celebrate just yet pal. We still have to convince Ro.” Tet cautioned when looking to the side at him while they crossed before entering the building.

The thunder of the crowd was louder than ever before. Hundreds of beings circled around a pit, shouting and clamoring for the violence enfolding below. Going through the makeshift stands on the left Ryū was able to glimpse who was fighting. More than a dozen men and women were locked in a free for all brawl raging seemingly with no end. Ryū paid it no further mind as he and Tet came close to a lifter.

Once they were on Tet pressed the control button on its side and the lifter ascended loudly and some shaking onto the labyrinth of metal causeways above. Getting off they headed over to what had been an office turned open throne room. As they came closer the Sullustan whispered.

“Mind yourself Ro is king here.”

Ryū didn’t answer back when they were greeted by four bodyguards, all of them Weequays. Tet quickly explained.

“We’re here to see the boss.”

“Yea Bitt called earlier.” The head guard said, eyeing Ryū warily before searching the stranger while the rest had their blasters on him in case of trouble.

The pair were finally let into the red cushioned room. Sitting up top in the best seat was a silver haired near-human male in an emerald suit with white boots. His eyes were intensely blue as he drank from his club. Giving first Tet a look he remarked.

“I pay you to bring info Tet not a stray.”

At that last word Ryū squeezed his right hand, to keep himself in check. He hated that word but didn’t want Ro or the others to know that. Nervously laughing as he rubbed the back of his neck, Tet nodded.

“True, true boss but this guy wanted to meet with you. He was very convincing.”

Darcen Ro shook his head in disgust but nevertheless turned to the newcomer before him.

“Alright outlander you wanted an audience, well here I am. So who are you exactly? You’re definitely new in these parts.”

Without missing a beat Ryū explained.

“Hantā, I’m tracking down a fugitive who came to this level.”

“Oh a bounty hunter now that makes sense. But why come to me? Don’t ya got a tracking fob.”

The masked hunter nodded, replying.

“Yes and it’s still working but I realized I need more information just to be sure and figured you would know since this is your turf.”

Darcen Ro snorted upon hearing that.

“Well you’re right about this place being mine but I don’t give that information for free. Running an empire here is not a charity event.”

Inside the mask Ryū rolled his eyes but nevertheless he pressed on. Holding out a holoprojector in the left hand he quickly activated it, displaying his bounty’s appearance. Swifty Ro’s indifference turned to interest with an upraised eyebrow. Seizing his chance Ryū next said.

“Klaf Reekz but you may know him better as Cos Mos.”

Sighing, the gang leader nodded in acknowledgment. He did know something after all. His scowl quickly made evident he didn’t think well of him.

“That three eyed twerp. He tried to cheat me in sabacc but got away and killed some of my crew with some droid drones of his. We chased after him but the sleemo gave us the slip at the eastern junkyard. Any member I sent searching there afterwards has either come up dead or wishing they were due to his traps and crazy gadgets of his.”

Interesting so he is more dangerous than I thought he would be.

Keeping that thought to himself Ryū instead said.

“You've been helpful. In exchange for this information I’ll get him out of your hair.”

Ro lifted a finger. “Not so fast hunter. You won’t be going alone.” Turning to his Sullustan underling he said.

“Tet you’re going with him!” Both Tet and Ryū were about to protest but Ro wouldn’t have it.

“That is not up for a committee. You’re proving yourself one way or another. Now as for you, Hantā consider this as a favor for my information.”

Seeing no alternative Ryū shrugged his shoulders in resignation but Tet rubbed his hands together with ever growing anxiety.
