Biography
Born on Chandrila to parents of moderate wealth and minimal recognition, Gladys Keane was something of an unremarkable Jedi candidate. Never a high achiever, nor a troublemaker, Keane's tutelage was one of almost conspicuously little interest or excitement, leading details of her youth and training under the Order something of a nondescript mystery. At the time, it was believed that Keane simply wasn't all that remarkable. The reality couldn't be farther from the truth.
In reality, a keen and cunning mind burned brightly behind a patient and obedient facade, observing and absorbing as much knowledge and information as possible, hidden behind a polite smile. Due to her lack of interest in typical Jedi heroism, however, it took years for Keane's true talents to be appreciated. Like a fine wine, Keane's skills and talents only became more appreciated with time and age - her calm yet stern demeanour, sharp yet restrained tongue and strict personal discipline resulted in an extraordinary understanding of the Force, and a vast toolset of capabilities when required. Though unwilling to engage in combat, Keane proved to be an extremely formidable duelist when pushed, and an extremely well-practiced user of the Force with an exceptional stamina even compared to some of the most wisest Masters of the Order.
Craving neither glory nor fame, Keane's considerable skills found their own niche, as she was often tasked as a private tutor or master to more troubled Jedi students, particularly those who showed exceptionally strong potential or those whose destiny loomed large within the Force. As time passed and the list of successful students grew, Keane was able to leverage her abilities to take only truly specially problematic cases, and would spend the free time between student following her own scholarly pursuits, free from the usual meddling micromanagement of the Jedi Council.
As the Order underwent its own major seismic shifts following the reformation of the majority of the Order under the Jedi Lord, Gladys Keane was, rather unsurprisingly, absent from the ranks of the new, militant Order of Jedi Knights. Instead, she continued to work with the Council and the main Order directly, training the Jedi pupils that remained under the guidance of the Council in an Order now starved for senior teachers, and generally trying to avoid the war wherever possible. At the behest of the Council, however, and out of a growing concern for the looming darkness that threatened to envelop the galaxy, Keane finally turned to the Jedi Army, seeking to turn the Jedi Lord back towards re-uniting with the Order before the Jedi way was forever altered by war...
Keane was known for her stern and often disapproving demeanor as an educator.
Personality and Traits
Restrained and professional at all times, age has only hardened the matronly facade behind which Gladys Keane's true thoughts and feelings hide. Though at one time Keane probably considered the educator facade a mask she put on for her students' benefit, over time it has become a second skin to her and as natural as breathing. As a result, Keane is almost impossible to read, her body moving with a measured, restrained poise where every movement is considered, every facial tick is intentional, and every intonation of every word is rehearsed.
It is only in the company of a select few that this facade slips, and the 'true' Gladys Keane is allowed to be seen - a teacher who cares deeply for every student she encounters, and worries for the generation of Jedi born into war; A Jedi who, despite all her knowledge and power, still questions her ability to truly face a Sith Lord in combat; a woman who wonders if she will live to see peace restored and the Order that she loves flourish anew.
Gladys is not entirely wooden, however - she has hobbies and interests to keep her occupied, and has found ample time for these things in her many years. As such, she has a fond appreciation for art, particularly pre-Republic pieces, and she retains a small collection aboard a private yacht that she prefers to stay in (Jedi Temples being 'awfully drafty', after all).
Keane also sports a rather large wardrobe for a Jedi - eschewing the traditional robes, the Jedi instead dressed in a wide variety of fine hats, shoes, dresses, coats, shawls, scarves, earrings, necklaces, rings, brooches and others garments of clothing and fashion - but never anything remotely resembling the typical Jedi robe. In fact, it is unusual for Keane to be seen in the same outfit twice, though where and how she obtains such finery remains something of a mystery. Keane is also known to be rather fond of the occasional drink, and is often known for having a rather loose - and sharp - tongue when she chooses to imbibe.
Keane's grandiose flourishes with the Force were a personal trademark.
Powers and Abilities
The benefit of an exceptionally long life spent learning, practising and studying the Force in all its forms meant that despite Keane's considerably advanced age and unusually long life, she retained the skill and vigour of a warrior a quarter of her age when necessary. The wisdom of so many years also give her a near unparalleled level of practice and familiarity with the Force, making her a true master of utilising it in the most effective and efficient ways possible. On the rare occasion she is pushed into combat, Keane relies almost solely on her Jedi skills with the lightsaber and the Force, specialising in these skills to a true pinnacle of expertise.
Most outside scholars will attempt to apply Form VI: Niman to Keane's lightsaber skills - however, Keane herself scoffs at the notion, instead proclaiming lightsaber forms 'an invention of the feeble minded,' and preferring to ignore their philosophies altogether. While firsthand accounts of her actually fighting are all but non-existent, it is well-known that her age has no impediment on her skill and that she is able to push even the most gifted of masters if she is required to.
In addition, Keane's fondness for art is reflected in the way she utilizes the Force. While most Jedi are content with the simplicity of a function with no form, Keane instead considers the Force an art form in itself, an expression of the self that should not be neglected. As a result, her usage of the Force has a hint of extravagance to it - each power is accompanied by a visual flourish, or a burst of light, or some such artistry. Using the Force in such a way is no more taxing to the individual, it simply gives a visual flair and a sense of wonder - a form of extravagant beauty that is falling increasingly out of fashion among the more utilitarian and pragmatic practices of the Force in modern times.
