So long as the galaxy has spun there has been a need for entertainment. Before the time of space and stars people upon the world's of the galaxy would make shadow puppets from the lapping shifting heat of their cooking fires. Things gradually got more complicated from there.
Holonet TV is an entertainment option created by a conglomenration of studios and production companies with a variety of sponsors. It is all based around holographic technology and transmitted via Faster than light transmission satellites in the core and via signal boom tubes from the mid rim outward. While overall quality of the stream may diminish the further one is from the point of origin, Holonet TV programs can be obtained in a variety of physical forms such as disks, tapes, and downloads.
Productions of these programs takes significant capital and start up funds and each show has a different way of overcoming these obstacles. Commercial breaks are the most popular choice among studios showing off products such as Vibroknife cutlery, FTL Pizza, Saber Insurance, and Porg Jerky alongside many other exciting goods and services. Such advertisements can even be found within programming as characters and plots can be centered around a new Speeder, a flavor of ice cream, or even an exotic creature an entrepreneur is trying to push as a pet. Other programs are sponsored by various benefactors like planetary Governments, the Republic, the Hutt Cartel, and crowdfunded from viewers just like you.
One area of Holonet TV that has really taken off is livestreaming. People will stream themselves doing mundane tasks like cooking or cleaning or playing Hologames. Some bounty hunters and other figures who live a dangerous life livestream their hunts to raise a bit of extra cash and increase their clout. Oddly enough Twi'lek streamer girls are quite popular as they play Hologames poorly while scantily clad. A real mystery.
Holonet TV is mostly freely streamed to datapads, projectors, and other devices capable of taking in data. Local governments can attempt to censor streams of certain informations by regulating their planetary satellites, but slicers have been known to hijack those or put there own 'Dark' satelites into orbit. This 'Darknet' also exists to put forth programs of a more illicit and adult nature and is the frequent target of moral crusaders and a scapegoat for many societal problems.
Frequency is somewhat limited for Holonet TV so intensive trade deals often go on as studios fight for the best time slots. As time can be very different based on the rotation of the planet and bandwidth is more readily available in the rim, program variety greatly increases when leaving the Core which is mostly controlled by Government stations and entrenched corporate interests.
Thousands upon thousands of channels, livestreams, and pay per view Holomovies and events can be found on Holonet TV, but the most popular by far are as follows.
- Corelia's Got Talent- A talent competition with fantastic prizes, CGT was once exclusive to Corelia but has gradually found applicants from all across the galaxy. No dream too big no talent to small, every season is a wild ride from start to finish.
- Survivor: Felucia - An extremely popular reality series. It details a diverse group of people and aliens with the most primitive of technology being made to survive and compete in challenges for the grand prize of one million credits. It took a season off after the tragedy of Survivor: Tatooine where half the participants were killed by sandpeople...and not just the men, but the women and the children too.
- JFCIS - Judicial Forces Crime Investigation Specialists is a relatively new show that caught fire in the core. Known for it's cold openings ending with a pun and its snappy topical and political commentary this procedural crime drama has something for everyone.
- My Little Bantha - An extremely popular children's Program where Sandstone Sparkle and her friends try to discover a power even greater than the Force. Friendship.
- GHL - Galactic Huttball League is by far the most popular sport program in the galaxy as it is attached to by far the most popular sport. From primary school onward children from across the stars play and train for a chance at the big leagues with hundreds of teams competing to win the Super Huttbowl. Recent mandatory blood tests for midichlorian count and a limit of two force sensitive members per team are controversial new rules in the league.
- Force Fails - The Force is a power that commands respect, but the people who suck at it sure don't. Watch as idiot Jedi and Exile alike harm themselves in the dumbest way possible. Remember it's not Force if it's an accident.
- Its Morning Somewhere - The Galaxy's most watched morning show hosted by Orion Seacrest and Sum Ladi. This program deals with the tough issues like how to lose weight and the best way to remove stains. It also details local weather by meteorologist Al Ro'karr.
- Deucalians - A show popular in the Outer Rim. Deucalians dramatizes its namesake by having plots dealing with intertribal drama, daring raids, forbidden romance between slave and master, and a lot of blood and betrayal. Currently in its third season as Gola Baldr learns the mysterious Berserker who hunts him is actually his mother.
- R-SPANN - Republic Broadcasts of News, Senate Hearings, government funded educational programs, and emergency broadcasts
- Ace Spattaro - Everyones favorite smuggler, Ace Spattaro is a show about a man who will do anything for his crew. His latest season has him dealing with the revelation that his ex wife is dead and now he must raise his twelve year old daughter alone.
