INDEPENDENCE DAY
Sedra tugged at the metallic collar that had been placed around her neck, and glared at the male Twi'lek sitting directly across from her.

"Why don't you sit closer, and I'll give you a bruise for your other eye," she snapped in their native language.

Jiri, the male, clenched his fangs as he held a piece of dirty cloth to his left eye, and returned a glare towards her with his right one, which was yellow like fire. He pointed a long, thin finger at her, the tip of it ending in a sharp talon.

"You are your father's first born. I can tell by your insolent tongue. I will ensure you pay for his treachery, and pass you off to the worst, most repulsive buyer we find." His statement seemed to amuse him, because he suddenly burst into a fit of laughter, and grinned at his companions.

The two Whiphid males who had been hired to act as Jiri's enforcers chortled in amusement as well, their dark eyes shifting around the small space of the transport, taking in the three Twi'lek girls seated across from them.

Sedra focused her gaze again on their betrayer, as he dabbed at his darkened eye with the cloth.

"You will get exactly what you deserve," she said slowly through shaky breaths.

Jiri sighed, as if he had grown tired with the banter, and removed the cloth from his eye so that he could focus on Sedra with both of them. He shook his head, and the wicked grin returned to his pale lips.

"No, no, no little one. What I will get is a month in the lap of luxury. I'll spend what I earn from you on accommodations at a very expensive casino, surrounded by food, drink, and women. It's all been arranged."

Sedra chose not to respond this time. Her attention had turned to her sisters, as she watched a tear roll down Boshti's blue face, and a nauseous expression troubled Nola's beautiful features. Outwardly, Sedra may have appeared bold and defiant, but inside she was worried for the outcome that might befall her and her sisters. It was true that she was the eldest of the three, at age sixteen, and her twin sisters Boshti and Nola were only eleven - far too young to be sold off.

As unfortunate as their circumstances were, Sedra believed her father might be worse off. He had tried his best to defend his daughters when the slavers attacked their farm, but he was no match for two Whiphids. One of them had struck a mighty blow to his stomach with the butt of their rifle, and Sedra's last look was that of him crumpled in the dirt, unable to draw the breath to even call for help. His wife was taken by an illness long ago, when the children were very small, and raising three girls was no easy task for a rycrit farmer. Their upbringing had been humble but warm, and Sedra would give anything at this moment to reverse the sands of time. But that was back on Ryloth, and they were no longer on that planet. In fact, she suspected they were nowhere near Ryloth anymore, because they had boarded a ship and taken flight, only to land sometime later. The remainder of the trip was still a confusing haze for her, because Jiri had thrown bags over their heads. Sedra knew only that they had been moved to some type of crawling transport, because when the bag was removed from her head, she found herself seated here in this small, dark space, surrounded by their captors.

Boshti's sniffles brought Sedra back to the present, and she regained her composure long enough to give her sister an encouraging nod. We are going to be OK, she tried to tell her, hoping that somehow her little sister would be able to read her thoughts.

After some time the transport came to a grinding halt, and Jiri's eyes were suddenly lit with excitement again. "We're here. Rope them," he instructed his enforcers as he stood up from his seat. In the dark, the two Whiphids produced ropes that they attached to the collars that had been placed on the girls' necks back on Ryloth.

Jiri hit a panel on the wall of the transport, and suddenly blinding hot light filled the room. Sedra raised one of her hands to shield her brown eyes, squinting in the light. It was almost impossible to see anything after such a long period in the dark, but her Twi'lek eyes adjusted within a minute.

"Welcome," Jiri said, "to Tatooine, my children."

He stepped off the transport first, and motioned for the Whiphids to follow behind. The two enforcers took up the crude ropes, one of them taking Boshti in one hand and Nola in the other, with Sedra leaving the transport last, lagging behind the other Whiphid.

The group found itself on the edge of what appeared a busy marketplace of some kind. In the hot, outdoor air, sentients of all manner walked to and fro between sand-covered buildings, a few of them arguing among themselves. Off to one side, a human woman in shabby clothing was attempting to sell meat of some kind, which hung by hooks above her head. Her voice was dry, worn, and croaky as she called out to the passerby. Next to her stall, a Nikto dressed in armor of some kind displayed a row of knives set out before a human male, who eyed the gleaming blades as they glistened in the sunlight of Tatooine's twin suns. Whatever planet Tatooine was, Sedra could not help but marvel at the frantic pace of its people, and the sheer number of bodies that were jammed shoulder-to-shoulder in the streets.

Jiri led their little group through the crowds, weaving in and out like a snake, while his Whiphid cronies followed, pulling the Twi'lek girls with them. Sedra would have called out to someone, but she eyed the rifles slung over the backs of the Whiphids, and thought better of it. She would find a way out of this for them, she just needed a clear moment to think. It was impossible to do so in the hectic streets of this world.

At some point Jiri turned off the main road and led them around a corner, until the group was a stone's throw from some kind of gathering in a wide alley. At the end of the alley was a platform built of some kind of wood, and on this platform there appeared to be some dubious activity unfolding. A female Togruta, her red skin barely covered by cloths, was at the center of the platform, wearing a similar collar around her neck, attached to a rope, which was currently in the grasp of a Trandoshan. He tugged on the rope a bit harder, bringing the Togruta within reach of his claws, which gripped her delicate face as he showed her off to the crowd. The Togruta hissed in agitation, which the Trandoshan answered with a hiss of his own.

"500!" boomed a voice, and Sedra crouched down to see who had gathered at the front of the platform. It was a massive, slovenly Hutt, and Sedra could smell him from here. She rolled her eyes in exasperation, and silently prayed that her sisters would not end up with him. When no other buyer outpaced the Hutt's offer, the Trandoshan relinquished his hold of the Togruta female, tossing her rope to the hands of a Weequay, who was obviously one of the Hutt's enforcers. The crowd seemed to roar in approval, save for the line of slaves that were being held at the foot of the platform's stairs. Among them was a male human, a female Rodian, and surprisingly - what appeared to be a male and female pair of Wookiees who were at this time being barely restrained by the group of Trandoshans instructed to rope them in. It was a hideous display of disregard for sentient life.

After the human male was sold off to another nefarious-looking human slaver, Jiri beckoned for his men to bring the Twi'leks to the forefront of the platform. He gripped Nola's shoulder with his sharp talons, and leered down at her.

"You first, my aola", he quipped, pointing up the stairs of the platform.

Nola looked from the stairs to her eldest sister, her expression helpless. Before Sedra could offer any encouragement, one of the Whiphids had jerked the rope and led her up the stairs, until she stood on the platform above the crowd. It was a matter of perhaps two minutes before Nola had been sold to the Hutt in the first row for 200 credits.

"Nola!" Sedra yelped with helplessness.

The girl was taken by the Weequay and disappeared in the crowd of people, Sedra's view blocked by the massive body of the Hutt.

"You are next, since you cannot close that mouth of yours," Jiri hissed, pushing her towards the steps.

The other Whiphid tugged on the rope, and Sedra was forced to follow him up. She looked down at her sandals as she took the stairs up, her breathing deep and heavy. Her brain seemed to become very frantic, and standing before the loud throng of people below, her vision dimmed a bit around the edges. She thought she might pass out.

Before anyone could call out a price, a piercing roar filled the air, followed by pained hisses. Sedra turned to see that the male Wookiee had at last broken free from his ropes, snapping them with an ease that was alarming...if you had been his captor. The Wookiee swung a mighty arm at the Trandoshan standing closest to him, and the reptillian creature fell in the sand, knocked out cold.

His female partner seemed to draw renewed courage from her mate's powerful display, and she too snapped off the ropes binding her wrists together. She grabbed two of the Trandoshans before they could draw their blasters, and knocked their heads together. They joined their brother in what appeared to be eternal slumber.

Within seconds the pair of Wookiees had picked up the discarded weapons of the slavers, and they began firing into the crowd of criminals gathered in front of the platform. To their credit, several members of the gathering did not immediately flee, as if they had witnessed this kind of situation before. Unfortunately, those who did not flee were the first to be hit by the laser fire from the Wookiees. Each of them fell, and with each fall Sedra could see a way out for her and her sisters. Boshti had actually managed to break free from the grasp of the Whiphid, who had abandoned his duty and was reaching for his own rifle. Sedra watched her scurry under the protection of the platform, and hoped she would stay there.

Not far away, the Hutt who had bought Nola was attempting to slither away as fast as his body would allow, covered by blaster fire from his Weequay henchmen. Sedra's eyes found her other sister, who was crouching in the dusty alleyway, forgotten by her captors as they defended their lives. By this point, the human male and Rodian female had acquired guns of their own, and joined the Wookiees as they fired from behind the safety of the platform. The human fired off a lucky shot that ended up in the back of the Hutt crime lord, and then he fell, taking more hits in the process.

The demise of the Hutt suddenly brought Sedra aware of two things: one, that she was still up on the platform, surrounded by return laser fire that was coming very close to hitting her, and two, that the Whiphid was still standing on the platform with her, gripping the rope with one hand while he crouched and fumbled with the rifle in his other hand.

Gathering her own courage, Sedra leapt from the height of the platform, the rope trailing behind her. She landed on her hands and feet, then spun around to look up at the Whiphid, who seemed surprised by the Twi'lek's bold move. He gripped the rope with one hand while still avoiding laser fire and reaching for his weapon.

Taking the rope in both hands, Sedra realized she had the advantage from the ground. "Uhh!" she roared as she pulled on the rope, and with a mighty jerk, the Whiphid came tumbling down from the platform. She stepped out of the way just in time as he piled in a heap in the sand. He scrambled to his feet, vocalizing his anger, and Sedra jumped for his gun, their hands closing around the object at the same time. The Whiphid was on top of her, and she screamed, shutting her eyes tight, and flung her arms uselessly against his hairy body. The Whiphid suddenly groaned and fell over, kicking up more dust as he collapsed next to her. One of the Wookiees had seen the struggle and taken their shot, successfully hitting him in the back.

In a matter of minutes the battle was concluded; Sedra, Boshti, and Nola were gathered below the platform, clinging to its wooden legs in terror, burn marks scattered in the wood surrounding them; the former slaves had managed to all acquire guns while taking minimal damage; and only Jiri was left of the slavers, his nose bloodied from a kick by one of the Wookiees, his eye blackened from the scuffle with the girls' father on Ryloth.

The Togruta female stood over him, seeing the knife hanging from his belt. She removed the weapon before he could do any harm, and narrowed her dark eyes at him, contrasted as they were with the white paint on her face.

Sedra walked slowly towards her former captor, and now it was her turn to look down on him. The band of slaves circled around him, while her two younger sisters hung back, still afraid.

"You will get exactly what you deserve," she repeated, and a look of horrified realization came across his pale face.

With that, Sedra turned away and took her sisters on either side of her, her hands on their backs. The girls could not walk away fast enough to miss Jiri's horrified screams as the slaves turned on him.

"Don't look back," Sedra said to her sisters, who were still trembling. "We are going to find a way back home."
