Ifrane was torment. The world was cracked and split by the greed of the galaxy. Darkness had taken root deep in the planet…clawing to escape. A world that once pathed in Light was now consumed by Darkness. Of course, even the darkest night gave way to the Light. An ancient Jedi Praxeum endured despite years of devastation. A small silver of Light constantly battling against the Dark. Frankly, the Order had no inkling why the Praxeum had not succumb. The Jedi had long since abandoned the facility.

That was what drew the Jedi to it now. How had this small flicker of the Light managed to stand tall against the Darkness? Why had it endured when so much else failed? Alexandria Voran had managed to pilot her shuttle a short distance from the Praxeum. The winds of Ifrane made it impossible to land directly near the structure. She stood just below the landing ramp. Her mind unspooled in the Force, her heart beating in time with the Light. She was drawn to the pool of shinning brightness like a month to flame. They beat as one. It had the answers she sought…if only she could reach it. Therein rest the problem. Even a short journey across Ifrane spelt potential disaster. The Darkness ripped at pieces of her soul…seeking purchase it might find there. Alex’s face remained a serene mask. She dove deeper into the Force. Her soul burned brightly against the Darkness, pushing out past the shuttle. The full strength of a Councilor. The Darkness would not have them.

She waited patiently for her companions to join her from the shuttle. One old friend, one new. There was no rushing the preparation for such a journey. She knew each of them needed to ready their minds. This would not be easy and they would do well do come out only mildly injured.

Crix was beginning to feel that he had been a Padawan for too long - it was like a weighted burden that rested on his shoulders, the tether that kept him from leaping out into the Galaxy to do good on his own. He knew why Padawans were no longer permitted to go on missions alone because there were enough examples of why it was a terrible idea to choose from. But it was beginning to feel like he should have shed the rank some time in the past.

That was... usually how it felt.

Setting foot on Ifrane made him very aware that there were some experiences that made him glad to be accompanied by a Jedi Master, a member of the Council to boot. Ifrane felt like stepping foot on something like an open wound on a scale that he really couldn't actually fathom.

And he could fathom a lot.

Taking a deep, reassuring, breath Crix nodded to Alex as he stepped out from her shuttle. He certainly wasn't going to be flying one of his own - he was terrible behind the controls at the best of times and this hardly counted. Shifting his weight ever so sightly, he drew in on himself with the Force. Rather than projecting his Light outward, he cocooned it within himself like a layer of armor underneath his skin.

He didn't have the power required to project it to protect himself and others so he focused on himself, to not be a burden on Alex who he knew could do that.

Time to break the ice.

"... Not sure I'd settle here for a vacation home."
he admitted with a small grin, "But it'll look better once we've tidied it up a bit, right?"

Might have broken the tension or might have made them think he was mad - either way it would help with their nerves by his reckoning.

Once, not long ago, where meeting new people with as commanding of presence as Jedi would have thrown the serpent for a heads pin, he was surely getting used to the feeling. Though this would be the first time he'd met, or accompanied, a Jedi Council member on a mission. Yet while these thoughts had appeared in the young Jedi's mind at the beginning of their trip, once they broke the atmosphere of Ifrane, Sace knew why Yvain chose him to come to this location. His last episode of his Force training being that to touch the dark side of the Force.

Sace could sense the emptiness of the planet. Turbulence coming from the harsh winds outside, while usually did not bother the would-be ace pilot, made him uncomfortable. The fact that this planet had been untouched, or uninhabited since the last Jedi exposure was an anomaly in itself. Though proof of that would come along by the days end.

Sace was still new to the Jedi, though finding his way one day at a time. He still let the more experienced Padawans take the lead, though quickly was the day coming that he would take initiative more often. The two Jedi he was with, he knew nothing about. Just that one was a Padawan, the other on the Jedi Council. Sace still wondered if these masters felt like they were babysitting half of the time, though his mind fell from the thought as they breached the shuttle ramp.

"Hopefully this isnt sssomeones vacation home already! Doesnt ssseem like it, anyway." The Sluissi replied to his fellow Padawan.

"Whatssss, the game plan here?"

A wide smile spread across Alex’s face. Crix had not yet passed all his trials, but he had conquered the most difficult. He passed the Trial of Spirit and so she trusted him with her life. In short order, he would join the ranks of the Jedi Knights. “You don’t enjoy the feeling of impending doom? I think it’s a feature.” Her smile grew just a smidge wider. They were in very real danger. The kind that really wasn’t a joke, but they all knew that. There was a time to be Councilor Voran and a time to be Alex. Stern doom and gloom would do nothing to from Crix or Sace. The Padawans new the stakes, they needed no added pressure.

Alex waved vaguely off to the right at Sace’s question. “The Praxeum is maybe half a mile that way. It is that humming pocket of Light you can feel…a buddle that has endured all of this against every odd.” She motioned around them again. “We reach the Praxeum and we are relatively safe from the Darkness outside.” The Morellian Councilor shrugged. “But the winds prevent us from landing too close or taking speeders. So we have to walk across this lovely landscape.” Alex turned to face the general direction of the Praxeum. She nodded. “Come on.” She started to walk.

She had absolutely no idea what they would face on their short journey or at the Praxeum. No Jedi had been here in some time and it always dangerous. Alex breathed easily as she walked, the winds whipping past them, the Darkness tearing at the Light she pushed. A smaller smile this time. Do your worst, I have overcome much more terrifying. Ifrane was scary but not that scary.

Crix was glad he didn’t have hair – the atmosphere probably would do terrible things to it. Instead he just kind of had to make do with the fact that it, somehow, made the tips of his horns itch. However a planet did that he wasn’t sure but he was certain that he would probably find out by the end of his time on the planet.

He smirked a little bit wider as he eyed the planet again.

“A fourth wall you can lean on in a different color is a feature – oppressive dread has got to kark with the resale market, surely?”

Still, didn’t matter.

They were Jedi and even he was able to tell that the root of all the issues on this planet was the encroaching Dark Side. Stood to reason that without that festering rot in the wound, the planet would be able to heal itself and go back to what was natural for the planet. If this weather was natural then he would eat his own horns.

Hopefully it wasn’t just a naturally terrible place like Sullust.

“Head to the lone source of normal in the sea of crazy, try not to drown in the storm said crazy is throwing at us.”
He grinned, “Simple plan, plenty of danger and slim odds of complete success… what are we waiting for?”

He was, for lack of a better term, excited to be on the move again, to be pushing through the winds that were literally tearing across the planet. It felt like the very heart of the planet was aware of them and was lashing out like a wounded animal. Did it want to kill them? It probably didn’t even know they were there.

Did the Nexu care for the fate of a flea after all?

The snake was the last on the move, though that did not mean there was any stagnation in his bones. The Sluissi felt comfortable in the heat, however this heat was more than mild. The Padawan nodded after the councilwoman, though he wasnt entirely sure of what she meant by impending doom. The Jedi, still new to the Order unlike his Zabrak counterpart, would not let any words of potential future danger sway him from the task at hand. And at this point, that task was reaching the Praxeum safely.

"Seems like ssslim odds are a requirement for every Jedi mission." He said in response to Crix's last sentiment.

Still new to his Force powers, he could still feel the darkness emanating from this world. It needed to be cleansed, and restored to its former lightside habitable inner peace. Now, Sace had no idea how that was going to happen, but he trusted in his fellow Jedi and master to lead and guide the way.

Alex laughed as the Jedi began to make their way across the hellscape. “It could be much worse.” She kept her voice light, her words carrying over the howling winds. Her mind was serenity. This was just another walk across the plains. “The Praxeum is empty, and the planet is only dangerous if you lose focus.” Waves of Darkness contuined to batter her defenses. The Councilor deftly held it at bay. “The two of you would not be here otherwise.” She brought Sace and Crix because she knew she could keep them safe. Alex believed in teaching through experience…to a point. She would never expose the young Jedi to dangerous beyond what she felt capable of controlling. The Order’s numbers were not what they once were. She was still not willing to take that risk.

“Keep your concentration and all will be well.” Alex turned to smile at both of them. She was calm because she trusted Crix and Sace. She knew the young Jedi had good heads on their shoulders. Partially Crix. She silently shook her head. His Trials should have been over. She returned to the task at hand. Trudging towards the Praxeum. Ifrane was a desolate world. A world without life…but that Darkness did bread terrors. A howl sounded in the distance. An unearthly scream that cut through the wind. A sound that vibrated in the physical and spiritual realm. The Force groaned with the pressure.

Reflexively, the barrier around the Jedi strengthened. Her eyes swept the horizon, but Alex saw nothing. The howl sounded again. “Keep walking. Stay alert.” Her voice remained even. The Force pulsing warmly in her heart. She poured her considerably strength into the Force. Alex was could on one hand the number of being in the Order who possessed her skill in the Force. Whatever was howling would find no easy prey.

Well at the very least he was trekking through a hellscape with people who had something approaching a functioning sense of humor. That was how it could have been much worse - there was nothing worse than someone who was overly serious all the time. They all knew how serious the mission was after all, crowing on about it endlessly just frayed nerves rather than getting them more focused on the tasks ahead.

He raised an eyebrow ridge at the part where Alex said the Praxeum was empty. Did she... did she really just tempt fate? Especially by adding the part about them not being here otherwise? Kark, she did. Well, luckily enough for them all, between the three of them they should still be solid against most threats.

Hearing the roar, Crix bit back on his initial thought, which had been to give a sarcastic remark. It wouldn't help, however, so he left it in his own mind and instead he reached out with the Force. There was a general, blanketing, feeling that there was something Wrong but that was just how Ifrane felt - it was like trying to hear a whisper through static.

However he was versed enough in tracking to be able to tell more from the howl.

"It's trying to throw its voice."
he called out to the other Jedi as they pressed on, "Don't focus all your attention on the direction you heard it from - it probably isn't actually over there."

Unless it was a double bluff but if they were going to be giving random Dark Side manifestations the ability to use double bluffs then things were already getting out of hand.

It's trying to throw its voice? What in the world are we dealing with? His head picked up in the direction of each howl. The thoughts ran through his mind. Sace felt out with the Force, but there was nothing but the desolate world of Ifrane he had felt when they landed. No doubt the other two would be informed way sooner than the newly Force-awoken Padawan.

"Sssomthin' sssmart enough to throw its own voice'll probably be trying to put us right in a trap." The Sluissi responded realizing just as he'd said it that they were probably already thinking the same thing, if not had some idea of what made the sound by now. This mission was not one he'd been used too. Certainly not cookie-cutter or laid out right before him. There would be surprises and things beyond his comprehension, though he kept his wits about him. He knew he had less than a fraction of the expertise as his companions. HE was the one who had to prove something. And yet he supposed that his pride would be in not dying, or getting seriously injured. Therefore he concentrated on what he could control. And at this point that was simply moving forward along with the others.

The Darkness corrupted absolutely…but not all corruption was the same. For some, it was subtle and insidious, for other bold and terrible. Alex was willing to bet the created fell into the later category. Anything smart enough to throw its voice and large enough to cut through the winds was dangerous. She kept walking. Slowing down would only entice the creature. She kept her eyes forward, but her mind flashed across the landscape. Maintaining the circle of Light and pouring out her conscious mind was taxing, but necessary. The howl came again. This time bouncing before them. The Force screamed warning in her mind. Alex spun, her right hand reaching out.

Her eye locked on the beast as it galloped over the hill. Madness. A creature that could only be described as a nightmare sped over the cracked landscape. A Darkside manifestation unlike anything she had seen before. Alex reacted in an instant. As the creature charged and her hand snapped out, the Force followed. The winds were of the Darkness. She had no hope of controlling them, but the ground still belonged to the planet. She pulled her hand down and the earth opened beneath the beast. Her eyes narrowed.

The beast jumped. It barely cleared the sinkhole, but it did make the jump, scrambling to regain footing. Her lightsaber hilt snapped into her right hand. Alex’s face remained unmarred. She was unworried. “Keep moving.” Her words were firm and she meant them. “Crix, help Sace keep the Darkness at bay. Get to the Praxeum.” The beast was just starting to stand. Alex took another deep breath. The Force burned brightly in the Jedi Councilor. The winds whipped at her robes and armor. They would not be stopped by such an abomination. “Go.” She started to run towards the beast.

Walking into a trap wasn't really a bad thing if you knew it was a trap and knew how to turn it around on the person trying it. But the problem with using that as a plan here and now was that they lacked a lot of other variable. What, exactly, was trying to lure them into a trap was one of the variables that they didn't know and it was kind of one of the important ones.

Depending on what the creature was, they could either deal with it or they were all kinds of karked. Knowing their luck it was probably closer to the second kind of karked but he liked to think he was an optimist.

Of course the planet seemed to want them to know that the Galaxy was out to get them because the creature was disgusting. Disgusting in so many various ways, not least in the ways that it was disgustingly well suited to running them all down and gutting them. But Crix felt the fear guttering out inside of him as he clamped down on it without issue after only a second.

He released a slow breath.

"Yes Master Voran."

Crix had his literal marching orders and he would see them done. Turning to Sace, he patted the other Padawan on the shoulder, reaching out with the Force as he did so. Sace would feel him through the Force, feel how he was wrapping the Light around himself, under his skin, to protect himself from the Darkness.

"Race you to the Praxeum."

He forced a grin even as he took off toward the Praxeum. They weren't too far away and so long as they didn't slow down they would get there relatively quickly. Provided, of course, that the Darkness didn't lash out at them. Which, of course, it did. The ground beneath their feet began to shake and shatter as a the very earth beneath their feet quaked with the pollution of the Dark Side.

"Sace, we're gonna need to jump!"

If the ground was apparently a no-touching zone then they would just take to the air... and hope that the Darkness didn't have super evil bats or something.

Oh shit!

Sace didnt know what type of enemy to expect from this mission, but that certainly wasnt it. The beast looked like something out of a horror film. Sace could tell that much and yet it was still far enough away from them for them to make a decent escape attempt. Listening to their masters order, Sace understood that he was the weakest link of the three, though would try as hard as he could to make up for this lapse.

Nodding to his fellow padawan confirming his initiation to get them moving on towards the Praxeum. Sace could feel nothing but light enter his body, knowing that the Force was generating itself from within Crix. This posed as a great shield of armor for the darkness that inevitably lashed out at them. Even with his lightside armor, he could feel the void of the darkside. Then once the tremors erupted, Sace knew that their enemy was much more than a grotesque zombie wolf.

Racing alongside Crix, his long tail making it easy to keep up with him, Sace replied to his last sentiment of courage:

"Jump?...and where the hell are we sssupposed to land?..." Sace said wobbling a bit, but still able to keep a good pace despite the ground shaking beneath them. Although he had his reservations, the Sluissi was prepared to follow the Zabraks intentions of leaping to safety.

Alex had changed in the years since her return. She was not the Jedi Oren found wandering the Outer Rim. She still styled herself a diplomat…a healer. Those were her first loves, her truest skills. If you asked her what talents she brought to the Order, that would always be her answer. The truth…a truth Alex found difficult to admit…was slightly different. War hardened even the most compassionate hearts. The healer and diplomat still existed but beneath the warrior she had become. Alex was talented with a blade. Her skills in the Force rivaling all but her fellow Councilors. The galaxy had punched her in the mouth. Alexandria Voran now punched back. She completely comfortable sprinting towards the beast. Her robes whipping behind her, the armor creaking slightly as streaked across the planet.

Her lightsaber remained sheathed. She would not need it. The Force roared in her chest. She dared the Darkness to come for her. Alex welcomed the challenge. The created scrambled to its feet…screaming and charging. She smiled. Her right hand reached out while she ran. The Light poured from her, seeking the beast. Streaks of Light slammed into the abominations, ripping, and tearing at flesh. It screamed louder as it continued to run. Her feet stopped. Both hands reached out now. Light coming from her in a torrent. Dimly she was aware of Crix and Sace moving on. Good. The creature kept coming but she remained still. The Force flooding from her outstretched hands.

Slowly, the hulking figure slowed as the Light burned away the Darkness. This was nothing but a manifestation of the Darkside. A manifestation erased by faith in the Light. The creature dropped to its knees, screaming one last time before fading into nothing. Alex let her hands drop. She took a deep breath. The cost already being paid. She quickly gathered herself and began to lope back towards Crix and Sace. The Force propelled her forward. They were far from freedom from danger.

Landing after a jump was very important but one thing that Crix had learned the hard way was that when you were in danger, you didn't often have the chance to really question all possible outcomes of an action. No, instead the best course was to follow your instincts and your training - they would lead you down the path you were predisposed towards regardless. Crix did his best to grin at the Sluissi Padawan in a reassuring manner but it might have come across as slightly manic instead.

"That's the fun part Sace - we're gonna need to be hopping mad to escape this one!"

Jokes in the face of immediate peril? He had them in spades.

But the principle was simple, they would jump and when they came in to land they would spend as little time as possible on the ground before leaping again. Not touching the ground at all wasn't an option but staying still on the ground for too long was likely to result in Bad Things.

"Like this!"

He lept first.

To provide an example as he soared through the air before alighting, briefly, atop a spire of earth before leaping off again before it could collapse. Hopping from one piece of land to the next in a demented game of leapfrog toward the Praxeum, which was, remarkably, not even shaking at this point. Even through his jumps, Crix did his best to keep his eyes on Sace rather than the Praxeum - just in case his fellow Jedi needed his support during one of the jumps.

If Sace could have seen the unrelenting force and skill that the Jedi Councilor had when facing the darkness, he would have been more than impressed...he would have been inspired. However, his current situation led him and his fellow Padawan in the opposite direction, the threat behind them deemed too dangerous for them alone. And so the Jedi master was left to dispatch the threat while the Padawans fled. This was not something Sace would have devised himself, but he was in the presence of much stronger Jedi, and thus would obey and learn from their decisions.

Sace smiled at the quib Crix had made. There was impending doom not meters behind them, and then all around them, and yet this Zabrak Jedi Padawan could see humor in all of it. This left Sace with hope, hope that even in the copious amount of dark times a Jedi will face, that its up to each and everyone to not let it get to them.

"I feel like a damned ssspring!" Sace said, attempting to match the Zabraks levity, however it was still evident that the Sluissi was concentrating on not screwing up. The serpent landed on his tail already spiraled in a coil, pouncing back up using his coiled state to propel him further. The snake repeated this as many times as he could, keeping up with Crix easily with his long muscular tail.

Shit, I probably look like a damned spring too.

Sace could see the Praxeum coming closer into sight. Their destination not far off now. Though the severity of these earthquakes had yet to relent, and so they continued their hopping advance.

She pushed. The Force burned through Alex as she raced across the planet’s surface. She could feel Sace and Crix rushing towards the Praxeum. They were safe for now which meant her focus shifted back to the Padawans. She brought them. They were her responsibility. Even if Crix was a Knight in all but name. If anything happened to either young Jedi, she would bear the burden of failure. Alex would not allow that to happen.

The Force burned through her body. The Light lent her strength her mortal bonds did not possess. She ran fast. As fast as the Force could propel her. Alex could see them just ahead of her. That was when she felt the ground begin to shift. She acted on instinct alone as the ground beneath her gave way. The Force was her guide, shooting her into the air. She landed and immediately jumped again. The Darkness of the planet literally trying to expel the Jedi. Her Force enhanced sight could see Crix and Sace moving similarly. Good. She felt a swelling of pride in their actions.

Alex kept pushing forward, bounding one giant leap at a time. She easily gained ground on her companions but at a price. Fighting the abomination and racing across the planet’s surface was taking a toll. Her strength in the Force was considerable but not infinite. She had limits she could not ignore. In time, the Morellian caught the Padawans. Her voice boomed across the surface. “I’d have thought you’d be faster.” She pushed ahead. “Race to the finish, young ones.” The Praxeum was close. She could feel the Darkness groping for them. It wanted the Jedi. It would not let them have the Praxeum easily. It did not want them to have the Praxeum.

There was a joke in his mind, somewhere, about just how similar Sace was to a spring while they were jumping but he decided it would probably be a bit too mean spirited to bring it up. Besides, he was reasonably certain that Sace knew what he looked like - no reason for him to rub it in like some kind of asshole. Instead he flashed a grin and tried to give the Padawan a thumbs up as they jumped.

"That means it's working I guess!"

Probably.

Maybe?

Well they weren't dead yet and that was a good sign that things hadn't gone quite as bad as they could have done at the very least. Naturally the Master of the Council was able to pretty easily catch up to the two younger Jedi, though he was surprised that she seemed so playful. That was, typically, not a Jedi response to impending doom - at least from his own observations of Jedi who were not himself or Hannibal.

Screw Hans for making his idea of a normal Jedi so bloody weird... a warning rang out through the Force and Crix stiffened in mid-air before reaching out for Sace with the Force. Pulling the Padawan through the air, Crix helped the young Jedi avoid it when a spike of sheer rock erupted out from where he had been set to land. The only downside, as far as Crix was concerned, was that the change in concentration caused him to lose his own footing, tripping slightly and needing to spin to recover himself.

Avoiding taking a nasty spill, Crix lept the last of the distance to land, perched, along the side of the Praxeum.

"I hope the inside is a whole lot less exciting than the out..."

But he doubted it.

Their progress towards the Praxeum had its obstacles, however they were overcoming them quite well. And it was no surprise to Sace that the Jedi Councilwoman was able to catch them with such ease. Though now she taunted them with a race? The Sluissi laughed at himself in his mind for thinking for even a split second that it was a real a serious question more than it was to actually get them to move even faster. His mind occupied for that split second making him lose attention to the rock that had shot up from the cavernous fissure beneath them, just where he was about to land. His in-flight motion altered through no means of his own. He looked to his side and saw that Crix had paid the attention he had lost.

Sace smiled towards the Zabrak in a thankful manner, then placed his focus back to the task at hand. The Praxeum had been getting closer and closer to the point where the detail of the ornate siding of the structure had caught the snakes attention. Leaping next to Crix, Sace could not see even more detail on the walls. Intricate rivets and streaks creating designs on the walls that would make it stand out on any planet.

"Yea...I have a feeling that we've only ssscratched the sssurface..."

Alex landed near the Praxeum with an audible thump. She shunted the force of her landing, sending it deep into the ground. Crix and Sace quickly followed. They were close now. So close she could feel the Light. Without hesitation, Alex crossed the last short distance towards the Praxeum. She knew it the moment they were safe. A wash of Light bathed them as they crossed the threshold. The Force beaming inside her mind. It felt like home. They were safe. She looked up at the abandoned training site. How did it still stand?

She turned to admire the planet around them for a moment. So much Darkness, so much hate, and the Praxeum remained unbent. Alex smiled. Amazing. “The Praxeum is locked to all but the Jedi. We must open it together.” She reached for the Force, the welcoming embrace of the Lightside beating strongly in her heart. The Morellian Jedi put her hands to her sides. She beaconed for Crix and Sace to join her. “Once, there were many Temples that would open only for Master and Apprentice…most are long gone.” Her eyes opened, glowing softly from the Force. “Some of those protections remain.”

Her mind reached for the young Padawan’s in the Force. They would need to join their spirits and touched the Praxeum. Then the ancient training grounds would open to the small party. They were close. She could feel it. Just a few more steps and the secrets of Jedi long forgotten would open to them. “As one, we request safe harbor.” She waited for Crix and Sace. The moment they were joined she would reach for the Praxeum…reach for the safety within. The old ways called in the back of her mind. She smiled. Yes, this was the path.

Scratching the surface was supposed to be the easy part and if that held true then Crix was already beginning to dread this day. Fortunately for him, he wasn't alone so he wasn't expected to try and stand against the almighty rage of the entire damned planet on his own. He had friends and allies with him, though three Jedi standing against the Darkness of an entire planet also felt a little bit one-sided even then.

Oh well, just meant they needed to try harder.

Stepping into the place was... not what he expected. Indeed when the light washed over him he paused for a half step, blinking as he just kind of felt it. It was a bit more than he had been hoping for actually, an oasis in the desert that wanted them dead. The Zabrak looked around a little bit and grinned a little bit at Sace.

"Nice enough under the surface for now, eh?"

An entire building only opening for a Master and Apprentice? That actually sounded like something that would be really cool to see used again - it was easy to lock a place up or hide it if it needed two Jedi in such positions to re-open it. There had to be a reason why that wasn't continued though but knowing that would require, shudder, research.

Taking a deep breath, Crix released it slowly as he sank within the Force a little bit and reached out to link with Alex's own connection to the Force. He didn't try and guide it at all, just tying his connection to Alex's own and trusting her to move them all.
