Thaddeus was directionless, in the eyes of the Jedi. His master vanished during battle, and Thaddeus had yet to show an interest in picking up his studies again. Depression was the reasoning they selected for him. They chose for the growing lad who his next master would be, and he would be having a fellow padawan to train and help "keep an eye on him." Why? What did the Jedi have to gain from Thaddeus now? What did they have to lose?

Chad was the padawan's name. A nosey, happy-go-lucky prankster. One that Thaddeus couldn't help but think was attractive looking, and the lad found himself turning red each time Chad made a joke that was actually funny. It was the same for a girl named Emily that Thaddeus kept making excuses to hang out with.

Chad insisted on coming with Thaddeus to his "workshop", it was an abandoned clinic that lost funding after the Jedi started their retreat from the public. Now, it was the perfect place for Thaddeus to work on his science projects. And the boy had an incredible gift with chemistry. Thaddeus had a lot of fun hanging out with Chad, but he knew that the plucky ignoramus would try to touch god-knows-what with bare hands.

Chad was looking at a cracking dry-erase board. It was the chemical formulas that Thaddeus wrote down. Thaddeus was working on something extra special. A lightsaber crystal. Particularly one made synthetically with organic compounds.

"What is all this code do-hickey?" Chad asked.

"Chemistry. It's organic compounds. I have certain elements working, but the growth is too slow and the crystals keep themselves too small."

"what you growing, spice?" Chad raised an eyebrow.

"OF Course not!" Thaddeus yelped.

"Pffft, just joking! Nerd." Chad laughed. Thaddeus felt his pink skin turn scarlet red. He fluffed his hair to hide his face, and his newly growing horns. They had just started to break the skin weeks ago. It was a miserable process. Thaddeus's scalp was constantly itching and the tender skin bled a few times. The hair could still hide the horns, except for the two now growing from his forehead. Thaddeus felt like a freak.

There was a clatter in one of the hallways. Both boys stood alert. Chad's hand went to his lightsaber. That wasn't a good sign. One padawan being alert was nerves, two was intuition. Thaddeus brought out the lightsaber loaned to him by a jedi. He didn't like it, it felt more unnatural to his fighting abilities than the synthetic crystals.

Both boys worked to make sure the hallway was clear. Then, they began to inch towards the former waiting room.

There was a bounty hunter. No doubt looking for scrubs. The Hunter seemed as surprised to see two padawans as a cat turning around and suddenly seeing mice. He was dressed in strange armor. A domed green helmet, beskar armor plating, a rifle that was now drawn and ready to shoot down a target.

"A mando?" Chad grunted. It said nothing in response. It kept its rifle aimed. Thaddeus had never heard of the term mando. He didn't care. He just knew that jedi padawans were prime targets and just about anyone would want a cut of imperial bounty.

Thaddeus's golden eyes glowed in the dark. They fixed on the hunter, prepared to strike.

"Get out." he growled.

The mando said nothing, but instead threw somesort of device that blinded the entire room. Thaddeus cursed and sputtered, but Chad had swiftly dodged a strange ring of blue light. Lightsabers were ignited now, glowing fiercely. The boys were now ready to fight. But their target had anticipated a random struggle. Thaddeus recalled training in a skill that some jedi had jokingly called "rabbit style".

It was the skill of using dirty tricks to confuse and gain the upperhand. It was a supplement to lightsaber training, and useful in a pinch. Thaddeus reached in the force, focused on the helmet of the mando as Chad distracted it. The Mando's head was stretched back, just enough to delay a deadly pistol fire. Chad lopped off an arm. Thaddeus went for the kill.

And now there was a dead body in the clinic and two boys unsure what to do next.

"There's a dead body, I guess his ghost is now a no-body" Chad quipped. Thaddeus felt an incredible urge to punch him. "too soon?"

Thaddeus poked the body with his foot. He started to go through it.

"Ew! You're touching a dead guy!" Chad barked.

"Chad. You're really cool, but can you just can it for five minutes?" THaddeus snarled. He started to dig for any kind of identification.

"What the hell is a mando anyway?" Thaddeus asked.
