Hello everyone, now as the timeline is soon starting, I thought I would send out this idea to start a discussion around founding a Crime Family on Coruscant. I have been chatting to a few other players in the last week or so around attempting to found a Crime Family - within the Cartel - over on the Galactic Core of Coruscant, building it from the ground up and seeing just how far we get.
As discussions have gone on, it has become clear from the interested parties that going it alone is by far the most popular choice. As such, it seems very likely that this will be a collection of people - from the Corellian Slums on Coruscant, seeking to band together and make a go of having a better life.
Story
There would be some more discussion with the interested parties around this, but currently my idea for the storyline is reasonable simple:
Founded by a collection of Corellian descended 'Businessmen' in the 'Corellian Sector' of the Galactic Core World of Coruscant, there exists a small crime syndicate, made up of common members of the general populous, and a large number of Criminals. Newly founded by this coterie of 'Legitimate Businessmen', the group officially calls itself a 'Social Club' - but the truth is far more insidious - for they seek to work together to bring the Sector under their control.
Lacking any form of support bar what they bring themselves, this collection - or 'Familia' - must now look to their own, and seek ways to expand this influence in the hope of one day prove to everyone that the family, is not to be messed with.

Simply put, the first few people who are interested in this idea, make a character for it, turn up in thread one, decide to go into crime, and then work from there. Leaders will be decided IC, as with Bosses and everything else. What to go into Spice and become Scarface 2.0? Work it out IC. Want to make someone an offer they cannot refuse? Do it IC!
Overall Objectives
Broadly speaking, the group will have three main objectives to stick to as we head into the story and become a large faction one day.
Surviva - Naturally one of the core tenants of any criminal group, our task will be to survive and expand.
Dominance - A long term goal, the group (like many criminal groups) will seek to dominate the Cartel and the Crime scene in some way.
Legacy - As Walter White said, “I am not in the money business, I am in the Empire Business.”. The group will have the final objective of forging a legacy across the core, as one of the most dangerous Crime Family in the region.
Starting Out
When we begin, my intention is to follow the Culture of a real life group, and it is most likely that we will follow an adaptation of Mafia groups, with Sci Fi elements. This would mean that there would be two ‘streams’ of membership - associate and member. Now, something that I think would probably be unpopular, but would at least be authentic is that in order to become a member (under the Mafia Structure) you would need to be of the same ethnicity as the rest of the members, in this case Corellian (more on this below). As far as starting out in general goes, the first few members will literally turn up on Coruscant and head for the undercity, and start protection rackets, spice sales and more.
How will we expand?
Expansion will be the name of the game from here on out, and the group will be expected to remain active and work on a series of missions to force out/takeover local gangs and other criminal groups. Buddied up with ‘Front Businesses’ that we shall set up as we go along, you can expect a large amount of threads on Coruscant. These threads will focus on the street level of crime - not perhaps the ore highbrow level people have seen before. This means a lot of roughing people up, smashing up stores, selling things from the back of trucks and running the day to day business of crime.
Depending on if we go for Mafia or Triad style, the exact nature and aesthetic of these jobs will change accordingly. Once we start building up assets, the more effective and loyal members can then start dividing them up - so that we have a Boss, Underboss, and then Capos with their own turfs and expand more from there with the aid of the Associates and Members. Provided we get far enough to be noticed, and secure a large chunk of the Coruscant Underworld - plans can be made IC as to what happens next.
When it comes to members of the group, all of them would need to join IC, and work their way up from the bottom. This means that people who wanted to join for the purpose of destroying or exposing the group, would need to RP out passing initiations and everything as well.
What makes this different from the cartel?
Now with one of the main factions as a massive crime syndicate, there is no doubt a question to be raised as to what makes this in anyway different. I can answer that easily - this group will be starting out from nothing, with no NPC support or anything at all bar what players bring themselves. It will be small time from the off, and we will need to claw our way into some sort of position of influence.
This group will either:
- Be a loose affiliation of players, who will seek to band together and form an indie faction with the desire to control blocks of Coruscants Criminal Underworld. This is by and far the most popular option.
- Be affiliated to the Cartel. This is something we would rather avoid.
As we hope to go for the first option, it is very very likely that we will, after a shed load of threads, and provided that everything goes well, become large enough to appear on the Cartels Radar - and at this point, we may clash with them, or work with them - only time and RP will tell.
What is in it for players?
Simply put, should we get a couple of people interested in this, I expect it to be a long and compelling storyline around how Crime came to the Galactic Core. Sure, it will be very risky, but if we can pull it off - and make it through the shootouts, raids and crackdowns - we could become the original crime family of the Galactic Core.
Who is currently interested?
Lots of you have shown an interest so far, and of those who I have spoken to about it directly we have Raydo and Drav interested in making founding members of the group, with Darasuum and Jinan looking to make either enforcers or associates for the group. A few others have shown interest that I have yet to speak to.
