The Red Star Privateers - Force using, treasure hunting space pirates
History
Short Version
The Red Star Privateers is a group of space pirates led by former Jedi consular and fallen Jedi Telv Varno along with a group of four other dark Jedi. Captain Varno was one of the Jedi Order’s archeologists and left due to an interest in Sith artifacts. Instead of joining the Sith Order to study the temples of Korriban, Captain Varno left his archeological dig on Yavin 4 after a Dark Jedi raid with five of the Dark Jedi to start a career of treasure hunting funded by space piracy. The organization has grown over the last 15 years to include many people including Force sensitives who have left the Jedi, Sith, or Force sensitives who simply wanted nothing to do with either of those organizations, along with mercenaries, treasure hunters, Mandalorians, and common pirates.
Description
There are two things that make this group unique from other pirate groups. The first is that many of the members wield Sith warblades made using an artifact recovered from Yavin 4 from the days of Naga Sadow’s exile. However, due to the fact that to be used to their full effect the wielder needs to be strong in the Dark Side, for most of the Red Star Privateers’ predominantly non Force sensitive crew these weapons are little more effective than vibroblades. However, for those who are Force sensitive these weapons are comparable to lightsabers.
The second thing that makes the privateers unique is that they actively pursue treasures, artifacts, and rare antiques, particularly those relating to the Sith Order. Captain Varno will often send members away from the main ships to go and recover (steal) some kind of artifact. In his quest for Force knowledge, Varno has also sent several of his most trusted Force sensitive crewmembers to go and join the Sith and Jedi orders to acquire their knowledge.
Currently the Red Star Privateers have two Corona-class frigates and three Marauder-class corvettes and seventy fighters of various descriptions. They have around 1500 members, around 75 of which are Force sensitive.
Membership comes with a free Sith warblade as well as a position. I’m fine with someone wanting to join as one of Captain Varno’s four companions. In that case you may become captain of either the other frigate or one of the three corvettes. Besides that you may take any position that would be found on a pirate spaceship (first mate, gunner, pilot, etc.). It is important that the crew is very diverse including everyone from pirate scoundrels, to rogue Sith and fallen Jedi, to Mandalorian mercenaries, to Indiana Jones treasure hunting types. The only real rule with people who want to join is that if they are Force using, they must be dark side aligned (rogue Jedi still in the temptation phase of their fall to the dark side notwithstanding).

When Telv Varno was ten he was taken to the Jedi base on Indupar. He showed a strong connection to the force as well as a fascination with history and archeology. Secretly, Telve has always had an interest in dark side archaeology, particularly things associated with the Sith. At the age of 22 he was made a Jedi consular. He served the Jedi Order loyally, and was made a master at 31 and served as an archivist. At the age of 45 he was put in charge of archeology for the Order. He took the other archeologists and went to Tython to study the old Jedi Order. The archaeologists were chased out when the Empire discovered the dig. The Jedi archeologists escaped and went to Yavin 4.
While on Yavin 4, Telv accidentally stumbled on an ancient Sith temple from the days of Naga Sadow. Inside was a relic that resembled a red star that emanated dark side energy. Telv spent much time studying and experimenting with this strange artifact and concluded that it was used by the ancient Sith of Yavin 4 to construct Sith warblades. During this time he started turning towards the dark side due to exposure to the artifact. While there the archeologists ran into a group of Dark Jedi who were searching for the artifact. A fight broke out between the Jedi and the Dark Jedi. Everyone was killed except for Telv, and four of the Dark Jedi. Telv managed to talk them down because as luck would have it, all five of them were greatly interested in history. Telv talked them into searching for artifacts similar to the Red Star around the galaxy. They agreed and left Yavin 4 in the Jedi ship with the Red Star.
After having left Yavin 4 the group ran into their first problem, they had no way to fund themselves.. Telv, who by now had fully turned to the dark side under the influence of the Red Star, suggested they start pirating. It was relatively easy for the six accomplished force users to pirate small vessels but they eventually set their sights on larger prey. They started hiring crews of pirates to work with them. However, instead of equipping them with vibro blades, Telv had the idea of equipping them with Sith warblades made using the Red Star. He had found several holocrons on Yavin 4 made by Naga Sadow himself detailing the construction of Sith warblades. It took Telv several tries to make the swords correctly and even then the hired pirates were not able to wield them to their full potential due to the pirates’ lack of force sensitivity. The blades proved only slightly more effective than vibro weapons in combat. Still, the raids conducted with the new crew went very well. This gave Telv and his companions an idea, if the blades were effective in the hands of common pirates, then imagine what kind of piracy could be conducted with force sensitive pirates.
With this the Red Star Privateers, as they had started calling themselves, started hunting the galaxy for force sensitive individuals who avoided membership to both the Jedi and the Sith. They gathered several dozen force sensitives including a few runaways from both the Jedi and the Sith orders along with many more mercenaries, bounty hunters, and treasure hunters over the next fifteen years. They also acquired a small fleet of ships. Throughout the fifteen years Telv remained a firm leader despite having to put down two mutinies. In order to keep from drawing too much attention, the Privateer’s piracy was confined mostly to the outer rim but now captain Varno is ready to bring his piracy to the busier trade routes.
