"Winds blow, nations change, fortunes rise and fall, but the simple folk will always be asked to shoulder the weight."

That was the quote that Izumi's father had recited to her on the day that he began educating her in the way of the sword. She didn't fully understand it at the time, but years later she would wonder if her father had somehow sensed that there was such massive turmoil brewing in the galaxy. The training included not only swordfighting techniques and strategy, but also meditation and philosophy.

In her spare time, Izumi would often walk the several miles that seperated her home from the nearest city just to get a cup of tea and mingle with the people there. She was perfectly happy with her idyllic life on the farm and completely dedicated to her training, but sometimes it was good to get some social interaction and a change of scenery. There were plenty of people to learn from there, not just warrior but common folk as well. Most importantly, it also helped to solidify the concept of what she may eventually be fighting for.

"Throughout your life advance daily, becoming more skillful than yesterday, more skillful than today."

Knocking the practice katana out of her father's hands, Izumi immediately tripped him, causing him to stumble backwards and fall. Before he could recover, the tip of her own weapon was an inch away from his chest. It was her seventeenth victory in a row over her master, but despite that accomplishment and her progress, it wasn't a joyous occasion for either of them.

"It's time," the man said simply while Izumi sheathed her katana and retrieved his from the ground nearby. The tone in her father's voice was as stoic as ever, but she knew that he was just being strong for the both of them to make it easier on her. He didn't want his daughter to see him suffer, it would just make leaving all the more difficult. Izumi didn't want to leave, but she too had known from the start that this inevitable day would come, and she realized that there was nothing more that her father could teach her.

The girl nodded solemnly and walked off towards the house to pack her bags, managing to fight back her tears until she was halfway there. She was normally much better at staying in control of her own emotions, but she allowed herself that one moment of weakness to grieve over the end of her life's first chapter.

"It is spiritless to think that you cannot attain to that which you have seen and heard the masters attain."

The benefits of relocating to the Hosokawa dojo, located in the city of Jar'Kai were immediately noticeable. Half a dozen masters to learn from instead of just one, each with their own specialties and quirks, as well as several dozen peers to practice against and bounce ideas off of. Other than a few chores to do around the dojo, there were really no outside distractions such as crops needing to be tended to or anything else, allowing Izumi to focus fully on advancing herself.

Motivation was never a problem for her, she wasn't one to get discouraged or give up when things became difficult. Whenever Izumi hit a mental or physical block, she found a way around it. Every time she fell, she rose back up to her feet and tried again relentlessly until she either succeeded or no longer had the strength to stand. She'd already surpassed one master, there was nothing stopping her from doing it again, no matter how out of reach her goals could seem at times.

Even though she wasn't the most naturally talented or even the most technically sound student, her spirit was indomitable. She was always the first one up in the morning and the last one to go to sleep, investing nearly every waking hour into one aspect of her training or another to compensate for the fact that she wasn't the most naturally gifted. It payed off gradually as Izumi consistently progressed from the middle of the pack towards the top, eventually becoming the dojo's very best fighter, capable of challenging even the masters who'd instructed her.

"Do not seek death; death will find you. But seek the road which makes death a fulfillment."

Branching off into the galaxy on her own would be Izumi's true test, everything else was just preparation leading up to it. It was on this journey that she would find out whether or not she could put everything that she'd learned into practice. Would she be able to follow the path of righteousness as intended, or stray from it and seek refuge within the darkness?
