Jack Thompson

Private Investigator

Canto Bight. This damn city. So beautiful. But up close, it's all gutter.

I was born in the City of Sin. Never liked it, but Canto Bight is like that nagging mother in law. You hate her nagging, but in the end you also love her, because deep inside, she really is all heart. Canto Bight is a shithole, it's true. Corruption runs rampant in every layer of society. Murder, rape, violent crimes are a fact of life, though visitors are never allowed to see this ugly face of the city.

But under the surface, you have the compassionate people, who every day fight in the war for their own souls, when they offer help to their fellow people. The stories they tell, the food they share, the hearts they open to strangers in need.

I've seen the best of the city, and I've seen the worst.

I love this city.

The name's Jack Thompson, private investigator. You would think that's a pretty interesting job description, especially in a place like Canto Bight. And it can be. Most of the time, though, it's the same job as everywhere else. A jealous politician who thinks his wife is cheating on him. A casino planning to hire a new employee, needing a background check done. And of course Banco de Canto Bight, who needs their security systems tested. Again. I'm on retainer for the bank; the Five Families expect the bank to keep their money safe, and for them to do so, their security systems need to always be cutting edge.

Boring stuff, really. But it pays well.

It didn't start like that. I spent my youth working in one of the casinos, first as an errand boy, then as a prizefighter. Lightweight champion for three years. The thing about Canto Bight is, unless you're born rich, you have to make your own fortune. Prizefighting pays well, but it's kind of like selling your organs on the black market. You only have so many organs.

Anybody who grew up poor in Canto Bight knows that the easiest path out of poverty is to become part of the problem with the city. That is, to say, join the Police Force - "The biggest gang of them all". That's what I did. I spent twenty years as a police officer, ten of them as a plainclothes detectie with the Homicide and Vice Squads. Funny thing about Vice Squad. You'd think in a city like Canto Bight, there would be no need for such a thing because it's all legal. You'd be wrong, but you would think so.

Long story short, after twenty years of corruption, violence, and catering to the rich, I had enough. I resigned, took my PI and concealed carry license, and opened my own private investigations agency. It was a smart decision. As it turns out there was no end of clients needing my help.

But lately, there's been a little too much of the good stuff. Too many murders, too many missing sisters, too many bank robberies. But mostly murders. It's like the city's underclass and criminal caste are shifting nervously under the skin of the city, anticipating the trouble that is coming in the world beyond the gilded atmosphere of Cantonica.

Meanwhile, the rich drink, gamble and gorge in pleasure just as always, oblivious to the fact that there is a world outside of the fantasy world of Canto Bight.
