Jedi Families

"The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it and... my sister has it."
--- Jedi Grand Master, Luke Skywalker
"It's pretty strange that I, a mere Padawan, am writing for the Jedi Archives. But I suppose that I am somewhat of an expert on the topic: even if I do have much to learn about the Force. Plus, Master Carrick is really putting me through the ringer with my Jedi Training. He insists this is part of it... somehow. I suppose there's no avoiding it.

"Families of Jedi are treated differently depending on which era of the Order you're looking into. Eons ago, when the early Jedi rose up to fight the Dark Jedi and, eventually, the Sith, Jedi families were a commonality. Jedi fell in love, married, and proliferated much like many other beings in the galaxy did. It didn't stay that way, obviously. In the days of the Old Republic, the rule was changed. Jedi could no longer marry. In fact, they couldn't form emotional attachments to pretty much anyone or anything: not even the students they spent most of their lives training. Love gave way to passion, passion to greed, greed to anger, and anger to the dark side. At least, I think that's how Master Yoda put it in some of the entries I've seen by him.

"By the time the Clone Wars finally rolled around, the Jedi had become even more strict. A vow was taken by new Jedi as part of their induction into the Order --- as Jedi, they would swear off all attachments, even love. As you might expect, Jedi families became somewhat of a taboo during these times. Most Jedi were forced to relinquish their bonds. Those that didn't were expelled from the Order and Jedi families disappeared from the Archives of the Jedi Order. The final change took place under Luke Skywalker, the man whom we owe with restoring the Jedi Order after Darths Vader and Sidious nearly wiped it out centuries ago.

"It is fitting that Grand Master Skywalker brought matters full circle. His father, Anakin Skywalker, would serve as the beginning of a long line of Jedi and Sith that would shape galactic history for many centuries. By the time of Skywalker, Jedi families were a taboo and a legend. The stuff of myth. Those that existed had gone out of the universe, diminished by time, until they eventually faded into obscurity. I am primarily recording this entry into the Archives to prove that such an assertion is entirely false and also to document those families who are now known to have Jedi origns. The Old Order's decree did not entirely snuff out Jedi lineages. Skywalker's family was a product of the Order's destruction, but
the Skywalkers weren't the only Jedi family running around the galaxy.

"There was another: lesser known, much less powerful, and yet it stood the test of time. I'm speaking, of course, of my family: the Firestorms."

The Firestorm Bloodline

"I learned of my origins through heirlooms passed down throughout the generations of my family. Of course, in this day and age, there wasn't much left to be handed down. An old lightsaber and an ancient holo-journal may not seem like much, but there is much to be learned from them. My family has resided on Serenno for centuries, but our founder was from a planet much more famous. The center of our galaxy. Coruscant. Her name was Siri Firestorm and she was rather unremarkable. She became a Jedi at a young age, trained under a Jedi named Haar, and eventually became a Jedi Master during the height of the Hutt Wars.

"Siri lived during the early days of the Order; marriage was much more acceptable in those days. She married a Jedi named Roan Farn. Why she did not take her husband's surname is unknown to us. She could have been bullheaded and refused, she could have had more personal reasons, or perhaps customs were different then even in that regard. Either way, from the union of Roan and Siri, the Firestorm line was born. The Firestorms would go on to become an almost exclusive Jedi family. They would remain so for thousands of years, developing a rather recognizable pattern. Notably, they would almost always marry other Jedi. Whether this was intentional or not is unknown, but common sense would dictate that it was. The Firestorm name was carried through the male line, as females began taking their husband's surnames as the customs of the day changed.

"One such male Firestorm, Tenn Firestorm, would marry a rather wealthy Count of Serenno, being among the few that would break the pattern in the Firestorm line. The two fell madly in love during a time of change for the Jedi Order. More and more Jedi were becoming victims to the Sith and the dark side because of their attachments. Love lead many Jedi to crave power for many reasons: to save or protect their loved ones, to gain revenge for loved ones lost, the list goes on. The Order saw the problem and ended it. Jedi were no longer allowed to form attachments and that meant marriage was forbidden. Tenn was among the Jedi who vehemently resisted this dictation and was one of the first expelled for his beliefs.

"There were other Firestorms in the Order at this time, of course --- relatives of Tenn both close and more distant. Eventually, though, we know that the name died out among the Jedi when Order 66 went out and the remaining Jedi, at the close of the Clone Wars, were destroyed by the Clone Troopers and the Dark Lords of the Sith. Yet still, Siri Firestorm's legacy lived on back on Serenno. By the time of Order 66, only the descendants of this family knew of their Jedi heritage. Hundreds of years had gone by since Tenn's life and death and the Jedi beginnings of the family were nothing more than tales told around the supper table. As the fire of the Jedi Order was extinguished from the galaxy with the Sith, so too was Siri Firestorm's legacy as a Jedi Knight within her own bloodline.

"Until now..."

"The Force stayed strong with my family. And when the Sith re-emerged many decades ago, at the helm of the New Sith Imperium, it was lead by a man named Darth Judicar. He is a man known for the fear and devastation he brought to the galaxy. A Dark Lord of the Sith, the likes of which hadn't been seen since Darth Krayt terrorized the galaxy. I knew him differently. At one time, he had been Count of Serenno, my mother's grandfather. He was Issac Firestorm and the Force was with him. Issac became the first recorded Firestorm to turn to the dark side of the Force and embrace the Sith Order. In doing so, he discarded his name and became Darth Judicar, Dark Lord of the Sith, Emperor of the Sith Imperium. Darth Judicar was a principled man who was mindful of the past. He was also mindful of what a powerful enemy the Force could be.

"According to the records of my family on Serenno, Judicar feared that the Force might sense his betrayal and manifest its judgement in the form of a Firestorm Jedi, who would destroy him and his Sith legacy. He ordered that every Force-touched newborn birthed into the Firestorm line be surrendered to him and his new Sith Order. Many of my cousins met such a fate. My mother, however, was also mindful of the past. She knew of Siri, of Roan, of Tenn, and the countless other Firestorm Jedi that had made our family great in the ancient past. She fled with me and, despite the brokenness of the Jedi Order, handed me over to the Remnant to be trained as a Jedi. Darth Judicar's fear had finally been realized.

"For the first time since the Clone Wars, a Firestorm had become a Jedi."
