Jinn Varess was born on Glee Anselm. An only child, his parents were farmers, cultivators of foodstuff who made their living by exporting their goods. The family was never rich or poor, they usually made just enough money to stay comfortable. This was the life that Jinn's parents had imagined for him, but he was to follow a another path, different from anything his parents could have envisioned for him. Even as a small child, Jinn's connection to the Force was evident, but the Varess family were not knowledgeable when it came to such things and sought the consultation of others. Eventually, it came to be that a Jedi Knight was sent to Glee Anselm to investigate the case. The young Nautolan was assessed and it was decided that he would be trained in the ways of the Jedi. Together, Jinn and the Jedi Knight left Glee Anselm and traveled to the Jedi Temple on Tython.
In the beginning it was hard for Jinn to adjust, being taken away from his family was a distressing experience. But, after several weeks at the temple, Jinn grew more comfortable in his new surroundings. In combat and physical training, he was an average student. However, he excelled in his academic studies. Given a choice he would always spend his spare time in the archives. Jinn continued in this way, always favouring his academic studies over everything else. He took it upon himself to learn as much as he could about the history of the Jedi and the nature of the Force. In his studies, he noticed that there was an almost cyclic nature to the conflicts between the Jedi and the Sith, there always seemed to be periods when the two factions would battle and one would seemingly destroy the other, until such a time in the future when the event would repeat with the return of the once-believed to be destroyed faction.
This pattern troubled Jinn, now in his early teenager years and under the tutelage of a Jedi Knight. Recent years had been relatively peaceful for the Jedi, with the Sith having seemingly been defeated a long time ago, it didn't look like they would be re-appearing at all, if any time soon. But history seemed to suggest otherwise. However, years past and there was no Sith recurrence, no sudden attack from the long-dead enemy and the concern that had once plagued Jinn somewhat subsided. Several more years of relative peace went by and Jinn was ready to undertake his trials to become a Jedi Knight. In fact, it would be many more years after he passes his trials, that rumours that the Sith returned would begin. Many treated the rumours with caution, others flat out denied them, but Jinn took the rumours as confirmation. Confirmation of an idea that started with him as a teenager.
Jinn believes that there is a hidden reality to the Force which has yet to reveal itself. He adheres to the notion that although there will be a victor in the on-going war where one side seemingly vanquishes the other, ultimately, whether it be in one hundred years or one thousand years, the once-defeated will rise again. He has dedicated himself to the belief that the only way to end this cycle of conflict is to uncover the hidden reality, which he believes, once discovered, will lead to the attainment of a higher level of understanding, a plane of consciousness where it is impossible to be tempted by the dark side. Holding this to be true, Jinn has forgone the war effort and undertaken a nomadic life-style. Through his travels, he hopes to reach the deeper understanding he seeks and use his knowledge to teach others and put an end to the conflicts which have plagued the galaxy for centuries.
Despite the tumultuous times he lives in and the magnitude of the quest he has put upon himself, Jinn is a fairly easy going individual. It is in his nature to always try to find the good in people, maintaining that nobody is totally beyond redemption. Occasionally, he worries about the opinion that other Jedi have of him and his abandonment of the war. He enjoys humour and bad jokes, especially in stressful situations where he feels they are needed most. Jinn has an easy-going attitude in general, he has no particular goals or aims, he assumes that the Force will guide him to where he needs to be. However, in this assumption he does not presume that the Force is some sentient being, instead he suspects that the Force acts more in likeness to wind, moving people along in whatever direction it is blowing and using this metaphor he feels that is much easier to walk with the wind than to try struggle against it.
Jinn is a Jedi Knight and as such he is a competent Lightsaber duelist, but by no means the best, a person who has trained more and spent more time honing their skills with the weapon could overcome him in one-to-one combat. On the other hand, he is very competent when it comes to using the Force. Jinn is skilled when using the Force in combat, his main strengths however, lie in the more non-combative and passive areas, a reflection of his personality. He is adept in the art of healing and although he cannot heal people completely when they sustain major injuries, he is able to stabilise them until they can get the necessary medical attention. He is also skilled in enhancing his natural senses and has trained in the area of status effects, although he has by no means mastered the latter. Jinn has also been known to use the method of trances to enhance his abilities in the areas of the Force of which he is weak in and his physical attributes if he considers himself to be in a life-threatening situation, the concentration and focus required to enter and maintain these trances however, are extremely taxing and demanding on Jinn, often leaving him exhausted and in need of rest.
