Julian Lycelle

Julian Lycelle is a Force-sensitive Hapan male, known to be a prominent member of the Hutt Cartel. A former gladiator turned ruthless entrepreneur, Lycelle’s unique aquatic fighting style, Hapan beauty and natural charm have led him to become something of a minor celebrity across Hutt Space.

The third scion of the once noble House Lycelle, Juilian was born on Hapes in the summer of 998 ABY. A further burden upon an already fallen and beleaguered House, he was schooled on the planet Terephon and later moved to the ocean world of Dreena, where he began working as a steward at one of the Consortium’s royal retreats.

Lycelle quickly proved himself to be both enterprising and physically capable, becoming an accomplished sailor, seaman and hunter, earning the trust and favour of his fellow stewards. Unbeknownst to the distant royal court, he refashioned the retreat on Dreena into be a paradise of his own making, establishing lucrative, if somewhat illegal, trade deals with passing merchants.

As his wealth and notoriety grew, Lycelle was approached by the Sith Imperium during the early years of the Third Galactic War. Promised the throne of Hapes in return for aligning his House with the Empire, his plans to unite with the Sith were undone by a fierce family feud, culminating in a desperate showdown on Dreena in which Lycelle killed his own family in his pursuit of power. The Consortium was subsequently subjugated by the Empire.

Abandoned by his people, his family and his new allies, Lycelle fled Hapan space and soon made a name for himself in the fighting pits of Rishi, Gamorr and Nar Shaddaa, where he adopted the stage name Julian Ly Sand. He has since enrolled as a Prospect with the Hutt Cartel and has made strides to establish his own company, his many talents and wide media profile making him an attractive investment for many of the powers that be.

Appearance
Unmistakably Hapan, Julian has a chiselled jawline, smooth complexion and a symmetrical face generally considered attractive amongst humans. His brown eyes are set beneath well drawn eyebrows, whilst a strong nose and slightly downturned mouth give him a look of quiet resolve outside of his trademark smile. He typically wears a crisp three piece suit for formal public appearances, usually in a dark grey or black, with a pressed white shirt and woven silk tie. His dark blonde hair is combed in a neat side parting on most occasions, and he will sport only the best leather shoes.

Outside of the corporate world, and during field operations, Julian takes on a wholly different image. His formal attire is replaced by either a custom made wetsuit or his unique Hydroweave armour, equipping him to withstand the rigours of combat. As striking in battle as he is in the boardroom, the Hapan often styles his hair more aggressively in the field, in a manner that pays tribute to his former Merman persona. His considerable physique is more evident at such times and, though he is no brutish soldier, his muscled limbs and toned upper body are a testament to a youth spent mastering the seas.

Personality
Cast out from a noble house and growing up in the shadow of others, Julian is driven entirely by a personal quest for power and prestige. Bright, intuitive and deliberate in his choices, he has learned the value of patience but also of taking risks. Though typically calm and collected, he is increasingly daring and quick to anger, desperate to advance faster with every passing step.

A well-practised manipulator and a charismatic young man, he ultimately prefers to work alone and has tremendous confidence in his own appearance and capabilities. This innate arrogance often means that he struggles to afford others trust and respect, treating most team encounters with disdain. This is typically expressed through sarcasm and innuendo, and only those few who truly impress the Hapan will gain a glimpse of the man behind the public mask.

Biography

Third Son of a Fallen House

Julian was born only a few years before the turning of the age, the third scion of the ancient House Lycelle; a once powerful player in Hapan politics that had fallen on very hard times. By the time of Julian’s birth, much of the Lycelles’ wealth and influence had been squandered away by a succession of short-sighted matriarchs; a process his own mother was only too suited to complete. With politically inept parents and two elder brothers, he had little chance of making his mark before one even accounts for the Hapans’ matriarchal society. Indeed, Julian’s own family knew their third son would be more a burden than a benefit to their beleaguered House and conspired to remove him from the equation as at the earliest opportunity. They would find it even more difficult to maintain their meagre holdings on the capital with another mouth to feed. No sooner had he finished his initial education than he was promptly shipped off to be schooled on Terephon, a little known backwater in the Consortium’s outer rim. The boy did not yet understand why he had been wrenched from the world he knew, despite already being a bright young man, agile in both mind and body, with a natural charm and curiosity that made him soundly pleasurable company.

He could not grasp the simple truth; that he had merely been born in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

The Honorary Amazonian

Terephon was a difficult world to love. Isolated, volatile and a place of many contradictions, its rugged mountains gave way unexpectedly to moorland and marshes, while its freak weather warped and twisted in a matter of minutes. Julian would have struggled to find a more difficult place to lay the foundations of a new life, but like so much of his early years, Terephon had not been his choice. Besides, living on the planet soon proved to have a one redeeming quality; it was not Hapes. Free from the scrutiny of his parents and the downward pressure of political intrigue, Julian was able to grow up comparatively unhindered.

Try as he might however, he could never forgot the glory of the Consortium’s heart; the power and prestige of the royal court and the radiant Queen Mother at its centre. She was so known, so famous, so entrenched in the hearts and minds of her people. Even the distant Terephon kept an ear to the ground where its queen was concerned. Julian had never had much of a voice in the universe. He could barely imagine what it felt like to sit astride such a lofty position in society, at the centre of such a vast and complex web. But it did not stop him trying. Silently in awe of the Queen and all she represented, he yearned to feel so loved and adored, coveting the power that would flow from such fame. So it was that he set about bringing himself nearer to the Hapans’ royal leader, in the hope that by being closer to the candle, he himself might burn more brightly.

He turned his adolescent eye to the Amazon Guards, the native Terephon women who served as protectors to the Queen. They were the planet’s only strong link to the capital and Julian became determined to join their ranks, for if the Amazons would accept him then perhaps so would the Hapean recruiters. Though he succeeded in impressing the tribes however, no amount of wit or guile could overcome the crippling naivety of his plan. The Consortium was run by women. The Queen herself, by nature, was a woman. Her protectors must be also. It was the way of things, and no matter his fervour, he was still a man or rather, a boy.

The visiting nobles from Hapes were not blind however; they could see the young Julian was committed to serving the royal family, even if they did not fully grasp his motives. They granted him a small boon in the form of a place at one of the Queen Mother’s summer retreats. Not having learned his first lesson in naivety, Julian eagerly accepted.

Power in Paradise

The retreat in question turned out to be a palatial villa on the ocean world of Dreena, even further out in the Rim of the Consortium. Built on a small sandy islet surrounded by crystal clear waters, it was an idyllic place and Julian fell instantly in love with his new home. After the mild chaos of Terephon, Dreena offered a newfound peace and serenity. It was not long however before he began to realise the reality. Surrounded by an ocean that encompassed the planet and with only a skeleton staff of stewards, the villa was isolated and alone. The Queen herself was known to visit perhaps once a year, often less, and the only other visitors were the few pilots that ran cargo along the Rim. Julian tried to remain positive at first, knowing service never came without sacrifice. But no matter how long he waited, his service never seemed to bring him closer to the Queen or the court. Dreena had given him nothing more than he had on Terephon and even less than he’d had on Hapes.

He threw himself into what work there was, becoming a keen fisherman and strong swimmer, putting aside thoughts of far off places to more truly embrace his surroundings. He learned to sail, following the tide further and further out in one of the villa’s modest sailships. In the deeper waters he found larger prey and brought back many on the point of his spear, raising a few eyebrows in the process. It was physical work for a young man and his body soon grew to meet the challenge. New muscles were matched by a new way of thinking as a certain confidence found its way into his heart. He began to dare, even dream again, pushing the boundaries of what he could achieve. By his third year he had sailed far enough to discover new islands, previously unmapped, bringing back flora and fauna to showcase his discoveries.

His successes earned him both friends and enemies amongst the other stewards and he soon realised the very notoriety he had always sought could be found there on Dreena, if he simply continued to work for it. Over time, a combination of his seniority, physical prowess and mastery of sea living allowed him to gain greater influence and authority within the group. He began to take liberties, demanding more of the junior stewards while bettering his own lot. Now he was glad of the Queen’s absence, and he set up deals with a number of passing cargo ships, bringing all manner of contraband to Dreena in exchange for rare sea creatures and beautifully fashioned corals. The villa slowly became a new kind of paradise for all, with Julian at its centre. Master of his own house and the mighty seas beyond, he could have anything or anyone he wanted and he loved it. Every single minute. And if he occasionally glanced up at the stars, hoping for another year without a royal visit, so what? He asked only for some well earned luck.

And, for a long time, his luck held.

Shifting Sands

Julian’s Paradise, as it became known in certain circles, ran uninterrupted for three long years. The end finally came in the form of a man named Cecil, a Hapan from the interior worlds, who claimed to have allies across the Consortium. He promised to make Julian and House Lycelle great again, if they would only open up links with the Sith Empire; the apparent victor in the distant galactic war. It was a dangerous gambit, one Julian instinctively distrusted, but Cecil was incredibly compelling. The man claimed to have come to Julian in preference to his brothers because he had heard of the Paradise and its master’s reputation. The Empire, he suggested, would back a man like Julian, perhaps all the way to the throne of Hapes.

It was little more than a fantasy and yet a part of Julian still dreamed of finding a path to such power. The Paradise had its pleasures, but it would always be limited. Courting the Empire could bring him so much more and the chance to restore his House after the ineptitude of his parents and brothers. He could not turn away from such an opportunity. He was convinced to call his family to Dreena, for Cecil said it would be safer to hold any audience there, away from the prying eyes of the Hapan government. He and Julian would explain the Empire’s terms to the rest of House Lycelle; Julian’s parents were still the senior members after all and any public moves would have to be initiated by them. As for their eventual replacement once it was all over, well that would be kept quiet for now…

When his Julian’s family arrived however, all hell broke loose. The Lycelles brought word that the Sith were falling upon the Consortium as they spoke, for agents had been working to destabilise the region for months in preparation for an attack. Shouting filled the halls of the villa as they screamed in fury, their claims wild and exasperated. There was no deal! There was no peace! There was not even a Cecil! He was a Chiss Imperial Agent! The Lycelles rushed at the man, knives and blasters appearing in their hands. In that split second, Julian did not know what to believe. He knew only that, whether right or wrong, his foolhardy family were making a huge mistake! He sprang to Cecil’s defence, pulling a ceremonial trident from the wall and whirling it with a hunter’s finesse. The Lycelles did not stand a chance. Steel clashed and their weapons went spinning away as a sudden blood thirst overtook Julian. He hated that they were there in his paradise, bringing news of its end! He hated his mother. His father. His brothers. He hated the Empire and its greed. He hated the Hapans for letting it all happen. But more than anything he hated the universe for denying him the life he wanted!

He ran his brothers through without thinking, parrying his father’s attack and slicing the man’s throat with barely a thought. That was when Cecil struck, looping a length of wire around his neck trying to garrotte him. Julian heaved, his muscles straining, hurling Cecil over and onto the floor. Down came the trident, skewering the unmasked agent and the man convulsed violently before the life left him. Julian came to just in time to see his mother throw herself through the high window, plummeting out of sight, down towards the rocks and the rolling tide. He did not need to know the layout of the land to know that she would not survive. She would make sure of it.

New Horizons

Life after paradise was never likely to compare, but Julian walked away from the showdown on Dreena determined to start again. The fighting would come to all Hapan worlds eventually, even those in the Rim. The Empire planned to break the back of the Consortium; a society that had never given Julian what he sought even when it was whole. He didn’t plan on being around to experience the half crippled version.

He bought passage out of Hapan space as soon as he could gather his things, for the slaughter of the final hour was something he was desperate to leave behind. Giving Dreena’s vast waters a last longing look, he strode from the villa for good, taking only the bloodied trident as a memento.

He spent the long journey through the Transitory Mists deep in thought, slowly piecing together the parts of his soul he desired to keep. He discarded his family and his people, for both had been but a shadow of what they should have been. He tried to leave behind the fury that had overtaken him at the last, but in his heart he knew his fury would henceforth be his strength. He had always been clever and cunning, with an enterprising mind, but such gifts alone would never have been enough. Only his force of will had carried him this far, drawing life from his suppressed anger at the injustice into which he was born. Always the fury had been there, buried deep beneath the surface. Only now did he see his soul for what it was.

For what is the calm serenity of the ocean if not a mask on the face of a ferocious power. Tides rise and fall; the same waters that seed life can so easily tear it asunder. They need only be roused.

Such was the nature of the ocean. So too, would be the nature of its son.

Skills & Abilities

Combat
Lycelle has been teaching himself to fight since he was barely a teenager on Terephon. Having learnt the basics of hand to hand and melee combat from the Amazon Guards, the Hapan truly began to hone his abilities as a hunter on the oceans of Dreena. A consummate master of the trident and spear, Julian is most deadly when wielding these or similar edged melee weapons, with a natural instinct for the reach and precision of a simple blade.

By contrast, the Hapan is highly inexperienced with blasters or ranged weapons, whether heavy or light, and is at a distinct disadvantage if he is not able to get up close and personal with his target.

Force Abilities
Lycelle has only come to recognise his own Force Sensitivity in recent months. Though he has long been able to run, swim and hold his breath for a shade longer than any of his contemporaries, he has always attributed these abilities to natural talent more than anything else. However, during his time in the Cartel he has become increasingly aware of the Jedi and Sith and the strange means by which they do battle. He now begins to suspect his talents may in fact mark him as ‘Force Sensitive’ and he is actively engaged in exploring all the possibilities this brings.

As a result, Lycelle is currently only an inadvertent user of a small number of Force Powers, all a slight extension of his physical capabilities. In time however, it is entirely possible he will master new and diverse powers, particularly in relation to his affinity with water.

Thanks a lot Bee! Pure genius! Let me know if Julian can ever lend you a hand.

And yes, Finnick! Obviously he's the inspiration for the character, with a little twist. :)

EDIT: In fact, we should seriously RP sometime! Take the Cartel by storm! I reckon he and Vica would get on very well indeed.

No problem! I was having the same issue with a tech profile and it was really annoying.

But we can definitely write these two together. She's got a soft spot for Hapans, anyway. (And can't swim, which will come up someday)
