BIOGRAPHY

Born on Corellia into a well-to-do family, his father an esteemed property developer and his mother a beloved teacher, Karath Gaath displayed from an early age an endlessly inquisitive and uncannily intuitive mind. Academic study came as naturally to him as breathing. He seemed driven at all times by half a dozen different hungry curiosities in a variety of subjects, but none captured his fascination more than history; the myriad stories of those who came before. His aspirations eventually led him to the still prestigious Corellia University, still in his mid-teens, where he intended to study history and - more excitingly, he had discovered - archaeology.

His final study expedition away from Corellia at the age of nineteen, to the distant world of Lothal, would change the course of his life in a way he could never have anticipated. Long had Karath harboured his own doubts and judgments of the conduct of the Sith Empire - a powerful meritocracy to some, a brutally oppressive enabler of abuses of power to others. He had of course heard all of the stories, most notably of the massacres perpetrated by the Empire on Mandalore, and scarcely wanted to believe them for their horrifying grandeur.
But when by chance his expeditionary party caught glimpses, on their way to their dig site, of a small town razed by Imperial troops on accusation of harbouring Galactic Alliance fugitives, it dawned at last on Karath that the stories had every foundation in truth. Something had to be done.

Also quite by chance - or was it? - it was on Lothal that Karath would meet an opportunity to begin making a difference. It was true that communities on Lothal had been harbouring, and long sympathising for, rebels of the Galactic Alliance. What was lesser known was that there was presently a Jedi among them, a Mirialan woman, and the young Karath had captured her attention for one reason; his great and yet untrained strength in the Force. Untrained, she noted hopefully, which meant that he was no weapon of the Sith - not yet, at least, for he would surely be turned when his sensitivity to the Force was discovered. It was in light of this that she confronted him one evening, in a small settlement close to the dig site where some of the students were enjoying brief downtime.

Meeting young Karath alone, and introducing herself as Shirro, the Mirialan spoke at length of the conflict she could sense in him; bubbling anger in the face of the horrors he had long heard of, and now witnessed nearly first-hand, dampened by a helpless want for answers as to what he could do about it. She revealed to him his strong sensitivity to the Force, and offered him one of the very answers he had been seeking - join the resurgent Galactic Alliance, and learn to put his gift and his exceptional mind to use for the betterment of the galaxy.

She would ask no decision of him now, but only asked that he think on the offer. Should he accept, she told him, he would need only return to Lothal, and she would find him once more.

Ultimately, Karath chose to accept. He kept his secret all the way back to Corellia at the conclusion of the expedition, kept his head down through his graduation (with honours, of course), and struck out from home immediately. All that he took with him was the birthright waiting for him; a second-hand Nexus-class freighter, purchased by his father upon his admission to the University and retrofitted over the years to better enable single-pilot operation. It was to be a graduation gift, his home away from home as he sought his own life among the stars, and he accepted it gratefully.

His first destination: Lothal.

Sure enough, Shirro found him, and he declared to her that he would accept her offer. Thus was he welcomed into the fold of the Galactic Alliance, and within it, the nascent Jedi Order still clawing its way back from the brink of extinction. Four years later, Karath's studies as a Jedi Padawan have advanced, and he has made clear to his peers his aptitude in the Force and his sharp academic mind.

Personality

A consummate academic, often described as a polymath, Karath has a head for research, a strong intuition for technical problem-solving, and a nigh-unquenchable thirst for adventure shaped by his studies of archaeology. His breadth of intellectual interests have led to passing proficiencies in piloting, astrogation, and engineering, such that he can manageably operate his ship alone if need be, but his attention can be pulled in the direction of any number of other curiosities at any given time. Personable and gentle, he can be relied upon for reasoned support in times of trouble, though he has a tendency to turn his mind first towards practical solutions when mere emotional support might be more appropriate. In the face of great injustice, however, his principles come to the fore in fiery, righteous anger, driving him to stop at nothing to alleviate the pains of the wronged.

Abilities

Karath's burgeoning strength in the Force and studies of its many mysteries are leading him towards the traditions of the old Jedi Consulars. He is careful not to prioritise his study of any one discipline of Force power over others, a vigilance which only causes his natural talent for telekinesis to become more apparent.

His lightsaber combat training is guided by study of the traditional forms. Most of his experience is in Form Five, the twin sisters of Shien and Djem-So; he has begun work to combine these with Form Two, Makashi, to further hone his offensive capabilities on top of this defensive basis. The result, as he intends it, will be a style that magnifies Djem-So's focus on decisive counterattacking through the lens of Makashi's quickness and efficiency. In combat, he focuses on complementing his lightsaber with techniques to enhance his agility and reflexes, the better to fend off a more martially skilled opponent until an opportunity to turn the tables can be seized.

Equipment

  • Karath's Lightsaber - This recently completed lightsaber sports a curved hilt and a crystal which resolves a blade of brilliant blue.
  • Nexus-class Light Freighter "Revelation" - Karath's graduation gift is a gently modified, second-hand Nexus, retrofitted with updated avionics and control systems to better enable him to pilot the craft alone. It serves as a home of a sort, a mobile base of operations; once intended for archaeological pursuits, now serving the cause of the Galactic Alliance.
  • Traditional Jedi robes
