Name: Karen Dogvarzha

Faction: Jedi

Rank: Intiate

Species: Nalroni

Age: 16

Gender: Feminine-analogue

Force Sensitive: Yes

Appearance: With dark glossy fur, a wet nose, big dark eyes, and alert ears, Karen certainly looks like a dangerous customer, but her long jaw quirks upwards in a slight grin. Her species tend not to bare their teeth except as a threat, but Karen is almost entirely alienated from them and grins with all of her long, sharp teeth whenever amused (which is graciously not often).

Biography: Karen is a product of her upbringing which, as befits the times, was rather haphazard. As a youngling she was tutored by thoughtful and spiritual masters who stressed the need to internalise the strictures of the Jedi and understand them, achieving inner peace through meditation and self-improvement, eschewing light sabre training and force powers as mere instrumentality, an unnecessary diversion into material matters and a distraction from the transcendent Force.

These were fine ideas for peace time, but the re-emergence of the Sith and the establishment of the Jedi Army of Light meant a change of thinking, and for a keen young Jedi fresh from meditating for hours on the meaning of “protect justice, civilisation, and the weak and helpless” it was hard not to be swept up in the excitement. Karen always kept her pointed ears open for stories of the Sith hunters of the Army of Light and their grand victories while she continued her own tiresome training within the Jedi Order, going through the motions of lightsabre training, wishing that some day she would be able to put all she had learned to practice defending the galaxy. Fortunately for her, the Jedi Council was blown up along with the planet Tython, throwing the entire organisation into abject chaos and providing her with the opportunity to prove herself.

After being picked up from her remote monastery, Karen eagerly and falsely claimed to be a Padawan without a master and was assigned to famed Sith hunter General Mathangi Ten Meti. Mathangi’s teaching was sporadic at best, as she was able to spare little time away from the constant running battles the Army fought in the early days after Tython, regrouping with tiny bands of Jedi on obscure and often hidden worlds and fighting rearguards against an increasingly well-armed and unhinged opposition. These battles and skirmishes formed the basis of Karen’s teaching, and she was always quick to obey her master, as both her superior officer and her spiritual superior. In those days, the light sabres of dead Jedi were becoming more common by the hour, so it was no great feat for Karen to acquire one and pass it off as her own, at least for a time. She fought alongside her master on several occasions, learning combat techniques through hard knocks rather than drill or training.

It was not until the front lines stabilised and the Jedi Army began to establish a solid idea of who was and wasn’t still alive that it came to light that not only did Karen not have a lightsabre of her own, but she hadn’t even completed the trials necessary to become a Padawan. It became increasingly clear too that Karen’s knowledge of many aspects of Jedi warfare was more practical than theoretical, as when asked she what she thought the seven holy combat forms were, she replied “stabbing, slicing, deflecting, stepping backward, lunging forwards, ducking, and running away if they’re too tough for you”. Whatever the need for front-line soldiers, this was clearly not a situation the Jedi Army was willing to put up with, and Mathangi disowned Karen has her Padawan. She was made an Initiate to smooth over her ambiguous status until someone could be found to keep track of her.

Personality: Her upbringing has given Karen a bit of a chip on her shoulder in dealing with more formally-educated Jedi, but she is still resolute in her belief in the Jedi Code and the Nine Tenets. She sees the code as a right and proper philosophy not just for their order but for the galaxy as a whole, and does her best to keep to it and encourage it in others. She is an eager proselytizer and only needs the opportunity to spread the Good Word, always looking for ways in which the Jedi code can be applied to the lives of others. Its focus on peace and justice are worthy pursuits in and of themselves, and if its tenets could be widely accepted no sentient being would willingly accept the random cruelty of Sith sovereignty, rendering their rule impossible.

In spite of her adherence to the code she does not always find it easy to restrain her passions, especially in debates over interpretations of the code, or in the face of injustice, or indeed when facing any kind of authority she feels is arbitrary and unfair. Many is the time she has had to be told “This is not up for debate”, which she interprets as “I’m not arguing with you because I will lose”.

Skills and Attributes: Karen’s training (such as it was) is extremely uneven. Technically she has knowledge of all forms of lightsabre combat, having witnessed most of them in practice in one form or another, but in reality she only has a solid grasp of one or two early forms. For reasons of practicality, she has a solid understanding of how to take on another lightsabre-wielder, but her lack of training tells in any engagement. She also knows little of force powers, as her mentors have either not considered them worthy of mention or not had the time to teach them. Theoretically she has the capacity for concentration and meditation necessary, but she has no understanding of the actual meat of how to do it. In combat, she hardly cuts the most threatening silhouette.

What Karen does have is a body honed by both a harsh training regimen and physical meditation. Her borderline-ascetic childhood under spiritualist masters stressed the ability to divorce oneself from the pain and sensations of the material world, as well as the capacity to achieve calm through meditation and contemplation of Jedi tenets, as well as precise body forms and movements to achieve peace. Her life as part of a roaming Jedi fleet has made her a light sleeper and able to put up with substantial hardship up to and including some of the lesser forms of starvation. This has made her strong, flexible, and with great endurance.

Less obvious to others is Karen’s sheer force of personality. She is always keen to talk to others, to try to persuade them to her way of thinking. In arguments of scripture she can hold her own against masters (although few have the time or patience to deal with her often sophomoric points), and she is always looking for ways to refine her views, even if only to better undermine a position she disagrees with.

Gear:
  • Tunic, trousers, and heavy boots

  • Training sabre (A blade kept permanently on low power. It can block and deflect blaster bolts and other light sabres, but cannot cut or burn, instead passing right through any physical matter. Sticking your hand in it is no more harmful than holding a hot lightbulb. It’s only really dangerous if stick it in your eye, but then again that goes for most things)

  • Jedi armour breastplate

Hey there @J-Wash!

I do have some comments based that need to be addressed.
  • Age: We do need a set age beyond simply adolescent.
  • Biography: Unfortunately, most of what you have in the biography is not accurate for the Jedi of this timeline. I would highly suggest reading everything in the Jedi Archives, this newsletter regarding the post time-skip Jedi, and the story thread. Most of the biography will have to be reworked. I am not sure if any of this is from legends (I don't specifically remember it) but we follow the Disney canon on the site. Once the bio has been reworked I can fully review the rest of the profile.
Tag me once the changes have been made or if you have any questions!

I didn't see the previous biography but it looks like you did a pretty good job cleaning it up and fitting it into our canon, so kudos! As far as I'm concerned (both as cp mod and jedi AFL), your character looks good to go!

I didn't see your name on the official jedi sign up - located here - so if you just drop a line there so we can be all official, I'll add you to the roster and you can get to RP'ing. =]
