Tynian stood waiting just outside of the huge double doors leading into the main hall of the Jedi Temple on Tython.
To say he was nervous was an understatement... His Jedi Master Kane had told him only a few short weeks ago that he would be taking the trials to become a full fledged Jedi Knight, and at this moment the older Jedi was inside talking to the council about administering the trials to the young Ysanna, which made Tynian both excited and nervous at the same time.

Becoming a Knight was logically the next step in the young Ysanna’s life as a Jedi... It meant that he had completed his training with Kane and was now ready to take his place among the ranks of the Jedi order.
He had come to be Kane’s apprentice only a few short years ago and (according to Kane) had excelled faster and more skillfully than expected.
Usually (as Tynian observed through his time as Kane’s apprentice) it took someone a whole childhood, and possibly longer, to get to where Tynian surprisingly had gotten to in that short amount of time.
He wasn’t boastful of it, nor was he conceited or prideful in any way in regards to how quickly he advanced, in fact, he was very humbled and surprised that Kane had that much confidence in him to graduate from an apprentice into an actual Knight.

He closed his eyes and concentrated on the living force to bring peace and a sense of calm into his being, which immediately helped.
He stopped pacing, stopped worrying, sat down on a nearby bench. He took a deep breath and then filled his mind with thoughts of his homeworld of Ossus,
instead of what Kane was currently up to.

Kane stood in front of the councillors, it had not been long since his last meeting with them. But this time the subject was the advancement of another, his apprentice Tynian was ready to go through the trials and become a knight by the old Sentinels figuring, it now fell to him to convince the councillors of this.

"Councillor Shivaaga, Councillor Corliss. I thank you for seeing me this day."

Kane bowed for a moment before standing straight backed and proud once more.

"Today I come before you to present my Apprentice and his readyness to advance to the rank of Jedi Knight. He has excelled in his training, grown exponentially both in the ways of the force and lightsaber combat. Not to mention the ways of our order."

Kane paused for a moment as he looked between the two councillors, guaging their reactions and giving them a moment to digest his wordy opening.

"Now, some of the trials I believe the boy has already faced and succeeded. With your permission I will go over them."

His opening given Kane waited quietly and patiently for the councillors' response.

Thalia Corliss was a more temperate and moderate Jedi than Rem was - as an Emissary, she was used to dealing with enemies in the political arena rather than out in the open like Rem. But when it came to internal matters like this? Well she was just as important and just as necessary.

Whereas Rem questioned how ready Kane was to suggest such a thing, Thalia was much more interested in the fact that the older knight seemed to believe that the young man had already passed several trials.

It would be up to the council, limited in number as they were, to decide if Kane's words held truth,

"Knight Kane - you mention that you believe this young man has passed some trials already."

There was a significant pause before Thalia cut though the silence,

"Please explain."

Rem Shivaaga sat in his chair and, as was his way, was not exactly sitting comfortably. To him, nothing should ever make a Jedi sit comfortably and that was something that just made basic sense to him.

If you were sitting comfortable then you were complacent and complacency was death.

The Jedi couldn't afford to be complacent any longer and at least there was a Jedi Knight here who knew what that meant... which did raise a question to be honest.

"And you, Knight Kane, do you not feel it would be best for you to become a Jedi Master before you nominate another for the rank of Knight?"

He narrowed his eyes,

"How can you be certain that this young one is ready to be a knight if you yourself have not learned all there is to being a knight?"

Rem suffered no fools but he was also rather blunt.

Ahh Councillor Shivaaga, always so blunt, Kane took a moment to compose himself. It was a valid question and would be answered respectfully.

"Well Councillor Shivaaga, weather I have achieved the rank of master or not I have been a master to Tynian, and it is the Jedi way that it be the master of an apprentice who decides when to nominate their charge to go through the trials. Perhaps I do have much to learn about being a knight, however I believe that Tynian has learned all he can as an apprentice and it is time for him to be his own Knight. There are some things one cannot learn about being a knight without being one themselves."[/COLOR]

Kane paused for several moments, he did not want to come accross as brash or rude. He simply needed to be clear and get his point fully accross.

"As for the trials I believe he has already faced Councillor Corliss. Some time ago now Tynian and i went on a mission to patrol the ruins of the Ossus temple and were attacked by a Sith Master, Serie Fond. I believe the council knows this name. I was bested, unconcious. Tynian continued the fight and ultimately saved me. I believe that this constitutes him passing the trial of Courage. I also believe that the humiliation he endured at her hands and the fact that she carved her initial into his arm should be counted as his trial of Flesh. It was a hard fight, one that he should not have had and one that I would not have survived if it were not for his courage and sacrifice."

Kane was fully sure about his convictions, he believed Tynian was ready. He also believed that the ill-fated mission on Ossus more than qualified as those two trials as he suggested.

Rem was the only one to speak again as Thalia had gone quiet as she brought up a datapad and began going through the records to ensure that Kane was telling the truth as it was on the official mission reports. Rem didn't doubt that it had happened and he didn't doubt that the young one, Tynian, had done well.

"Tynian... does your Master speak truly?" he asked, eyes narrowed, "Tell me young one... do YOU believe that you have passed the Trial of Courage and the Trial of the Flesh?"

In the end however, Rem was happy enough with Kane's answer to his first question. He nodded once, waving a hand as if to motion for them to continue,

"And you believe that Tynian is ready to become a Knight." he stared at the two Jedi for a long moment before asking, "And what sect of the Order would you recommend he enter?"

Tynian, now standing next to Kane and in front of two of the Jedi council members, was a bit confused at the question directed at him by Master Rem. It wasn't that he didn't understand the question, just the question itself. So he decided to answer as best as he could..."Master Rem. During the situation with the Sith, I really didn't think of it as a trial. I acted as I thought a Jedi would, and how Master Kane has taught me. To protect my his life with all the power the force has gifted me was my main concern. I did manage to keep her away from Master Kane, yet even then I still failed to defeat the Sith. She beat me mercilessly and left me wounded and humiliated..." He lifted his left sleeve to reveal an "s" shaped scar on his forearm. "and she left me a reminder of what she called, my failure."
He recovered his arm as he continued, "For quite a while I felt shame because of that day. I couldn't concentrate in my training, I was obsessed with getting better in all aspects of training so I wouldn't fail again... but that didn't help. I still felt like I dishonored my master and the order." He took a deep breath, "Then one day I felt the force drawing me back to that place on Ossus. The place of my shame... To my surprise she was there. The very Sith who had beaten me all those months before... Looking back, I now know the force had brought us together so I could learn how to face my fears. We fought again, this time she taunted me with the memory of my humiliation... but a strange thing happened. In a feeling of utter hopelessness I gave myself fully to the force... whether for protection, or I felt I was actually going to die... But the force, for lack of a better phrase, wrapped itself around me and showed me a great many things." Tynian smiled as the memories came back into his mind. "One thing in particular that the force showed me was that it was ok to fail... for that's how we learn isn't it." He stated the last remark with the confidence only experience would bring. "I'm not afraid to fail any longer, nor am I afraid to die. If it's the will of the force, then so be it..." He looked Master Rem straight in the eyes, with no hint of arrogance, but with confidence, integrity and humility. "I am a child of the living force. I am with the force, and the force is with me. Does that mean that I passed some sort of test, I don't know. I'll leave that to my Master and to you."

Kane listened as Tynian described the sencond encounter he had with the sith lord they had battled, he had planned to bring that up as well but wanted to give the council time to consider the first two trials that he thought should be retroactively cleared.

"Yes, as for that encounter with the Sith master Serie Fond. I I believe from what Tynian has described that it could indeed constitute as a trial of insight, due to the nature of the incident and the fact that he gained clarity through the force to face an otherwise dire situation."

Kane stroked his beard as he considered the question of Tynians sect thoroughly, he had been meditating on this for days now -ever since he sent the message to the council seeking this discussion- and after many long hours he had come do a conclusion he thought would suit the boy.

"Yes Councillor Shivaaga, I fully believe that Tynian is ready. I believe that he should be a Sentinel, however I also believe that the final descision of sect should be his to make."

Thalia hummed as she focused on the Force, reading deeper into both Kan and Tynian to gather more information about the two of them and how they were feeling about the proceedings. As Rem nodded, she nodded back.

The young man seemed to be telling the truth and that meant that Kane was as well.

Good to see that neither of them were attempting pull the wool over the eyes of two Jedi Councillors right now. She was tapping away at her datapad when something that Kane had said caught her attention. Tilting her head to one side slightly, she frowned,

"I can see your reasoning Knight Kane..." she allowed with a small frown, "But you are aware that this would mean Tynian has to pass only the Trials of Spirit and Skill to be considered a Knight of the Jedi Order, correct?"

She leaned forwards,

"He is that far along?"

Rem listened in silence as Tynian recounted his tale and said absolutely nothing. He didn't need to say anything because he was busy trying to confirm, with the Force, if what Tynian was saying was truthful or if the young man was embelishing it to make himself seem better than he was or to lessen the embarassment and the mental impact it had on him... he could see that his fellow councillor was doing the same thing and he nodded to her.

The boy seemed to be a good choice so far.

"Thank you for your input Tynian."

Probably the nicest thing that he had said all day if he was honest... and then Kane answered his question about the sects. It was a good answer too.

"Good answer." he declared bluntly, "Because it is never your decision to make... and you didn't assume that it was. Good."

Probably the most he had 'praised' someone in a few years really.

"Yes Councillor Corliss, I am aware, and I do believe Tynian to be that far along. I know it is a rare thing but I do know that the trials can be counted as complete retroactively, as for the final two I have an idea for the trial of skill and will follow the direction when it comes to the trial of spirit."

Kane was actually taken aback by the comments from Councillor Shivaaga, that was the closest thing to a compliment that he had even heard of the leader of the Crusaders giving. And it had been given to him of all people!

"Thank you Councillor Shivaaga."

He bowed his head slightly as he thanked the councillor, and waited respectfully for the next statements from the council.

Both of the Councillors looked to the other as they weighed what had been said so far.

Both of them had challenged Kane and Tynian in their own ways and neither the young man nor the Knight acting as his Master were moved by the challenges that had been raised. This was, without a doubt, a very good sign for the both of them. In the end, they shared an unspoken agreement. Rem was the one who spoke,

"Tynian - step forwards." he commanded the young man as Kane was told to step back by a gesture from Thalia, "Kneel before the council. Kane - kneel beside your apprentice."

Once the two men were in position, Rem stood from his chair and Thalia did the same. The two of them stood before the two Jedi and stared down at them.

"Tynian - you will be challenged. Will you falter?"

An important part of being ready for the trials was to accept that it would be difficult... but to accept that you had to overcome those difficulties.

"Kane - your student will be challenged. Will you let him stand upon his own feet?"

Equally important for the Master, was letting the student walk their own path... even when they were faltering.

The two Council members spoke as one now - for this was true for both of the Jedi in front of them here today.

"When you stand and leave this room you will stride forth upon the next part of your journey. The path may be hard to walk but that hardship will make the destination all the sweeter, make it mean all the more. And know, should you stray from your path, that your brothers and sisters within the Order shall pick you up, dust you off, and help you set out on the journey once again. Go now with your greatest ally - go now with the Force for it shall be with you. Always."

Tynian simply nodded his response to the question asked of him.
He wasn’t hesitant in the answer, he would do his best not to falter during the upcoming trial.
He knew that he would have to rely on all the teaching and training given to him by his master Kane, and most importantly, that he would be alone.
His master wouldn’t be able to help or advise in any way... it was up to him to pass... or fail.
He took a deep breath...“May the force be with me... or I’m screwed.”
