Lanx Brach

star-wars-day-10-honiton-devon-props-firefly-mal-reynolds-nathan-fillion-browncoat.jpg

COMPOSITION AND APPEARANCE:
Lanx is tall as humans go. He stands approximately 6'4" with full footgear. He has brown hair, and his eyes are a dark green color. He generally wears simple clothes fit for traveling, usually with a long brown overcoat and always with a belt with blaster holsters on each hip.

PERSONALITY:
Lanx is a criminal by trade, though he justifies his actions in his head. He spends most of his time smuggling illegal goods across government borders, yet he feels the laws that make these things illegal exist simply so the government may prosper off of their control. Despite his rough profession, he is very personable, and is generally rather civilized. He tends to get cynical around authorities when he does have to deal with them. He's a smooth talker, as well. He's found that a sliver tongue can outplay silver bullets when it comes to getting out of dangerous situations.

LIKES AND DISLIKES:
Lanx is a good Dejarik player, and often will bring a mobile holo-board with him when he visits cantinas. He can often be found laying low in taverns, or on his ship, constantly trying to make improvements and upgrades.

Lanx holds no place in his heart for authority in general. Ironically, he loves when his crew calls him "Captain" or "Boss".

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES:
Lanx isn't force sensitive, so any Jedi has an obvious physical advantage over him. However, he does have a very strong intellect, and can resist the will-bending powers of force users. Strategy, careful planning, and skillful execution are what Lanx relies on to survive.

ASSETS:
Personal Ship, Conviction

HISTORY:
Lanx was born in the Corelli system on the planet of Corellia. His father was a local freighter pilot who mostly took local contracts doing in-planet transportation. He was a member of the planet's union, and in good standing. In spare time, he would compete in speeder races to earn some extra money. His mother worked at home, tending a large garden and selling the fresh grown goods to local markets. It was her two taught Lanx the strategy of Dejarik.

Growing up, Lanx spent time with his father aboard his transport. As a small boy, he lived for those moments when they cleared city-space and his father let him take the flight controls for awhile. Soon he was old enough where he could fly copilot with his father, and they spent a good deal of time making trips around the planet, and occasionally between planets of the Corelli system. When he wasn't flying or helping his father do maintenance on the ship, he would spend time reading in their family garden or play blaster tag with his friends. Here he learned his quick draw, and taught himself how to shoot.

Around the time he was eighteen and ready to enroll in the Corellian Academy, the government shifted dramatically. Rumors of anarchy around the galaxy and crumbling interplanetary relations acted as the breeding ground for a new party which swept Corellia's parliament. Dozens of laws were enacted, and executive privileges were used without discretion. Suddenly CorSec was a brute squad, breaking into homes of suspected seditionists and carrying families off into unmarked transports all "for the good of the state".

Lanx's father was an independent man, who had often told him to rely only on himself and his closest friends. So when the freighters' union was forced to carry CorSec troops at the leisure of the government, he immediately burned his own license in protest. He publicly spoke out in their home town against the police-state that Corellia was becoming. He spoke of freedom of choice, and a citizen's right to shape his own destiny. Soon Mr. Brach had a following of friends behind him, and planned to make a demonstration and petition on behalf of the Union that the executive orders over them be lifted. They gathered much support, and the month of the planned rally came.

One day, Lanx was at a tavern with his friends, when he got a message on his datapad to come home immediately. It was from his mother. He had high hopes; his father's rally was gathering so much support, and he was thrilled that he'd get to support such a worthy cause. He hoped perhaps they were leaving today for the capitol where the the demonstration would take place. He reached their home only to find it surrounded by vehicles. They were all marked black and green. CorSec colors.

He broke into a dead sprint to the door, but was stopped by two armed guards. A second later an officer appeared. A rough-shaven man with a greasy grin, he didn't look anything like a decorated CorSec officer. Lanx had heard rumors that many of the officers had left with the installment of the new government. He'd also heard that those who stayed and resisted the policy of the regime change had disappeared... In truth, he didn't think things were really all that bad. He lived in a small Corellian city, he hadn't truly seen the effects this new government was having on its people. Not until now.

"Your father is under arrest for seditious activity," the officer spoke in a self-satisfied tone. "And we're taking your mother in as well, for interfering with CorSec operations. She tried to prevent us from taking your father," he smiled at him as though it were a joke. "Don't make the same mistake, kid."

Lanx wasn't paying attention anymore. He saw two men carrying his father by his underarms, his head bagged and sagging limply, and his feet dragging on the ground. He was wearing stuncuffs, but they weren't activated. A gust of wind blew from that direction, and Lanx's heart sunk in his chest. He smelled the smell of scorched flesh.

He was ready to try and break free when he saw his mother being lead from the house with activated stun cuffs on her wrist. She didn't even see Lanx, and the numb look on her face confirmed his fears. Those sons of hutts shot him right in front of her... he thought. Suddenly, he could see nothing but tears, and felt himself hit the duracrete in front of his house.

A few weeks later, he found himself in the capital city, where his father's demonstration would never take place. He made his way through the darkest establishments he could find, and submitted to at least a dozen different searches as the taverns were stormed by police forces. He eventually found what he was looking for, and signed his services to a group of off-worlders who asked no questions, and were looking to leave that day.

Over the next few years, Lanx was in his first gunfight, ran from his first police cruiser, and smuggled his first load of Kessel spice. He was promoted to Lieutenant of the ship, and finally to Captain. His previous employer wished to retire, and wished him the best of luck with the Corellian Corvette. "It's earned me my fortune, may it do the same for you, kid," he told him. The rest of the crew left with him, and Lanx spent the next two months making contacts and hiring people to work under him. People would come and go, until someone Lanx felt he could trust came aboard.

Now, Captain Brach and his crew wander between planets, searching for cargo to move, or other more interesting contracts.
