Master Kiel Aferar entered the council chambers, he bowed before his peers and waited to be greeted in kind. The business today was Master Aferar's request to take the Padawan Xull'Izz. The young boy was a rare mixture of Aquar and Wroonian that had made him a special case for the council. Any Jedi wishing to take him as a Padawan would require approval, not only for Xull'Izz's sake, but for thier own. He would be a Padawan that could test the limits of mediocrity in the eyes of the Council.

"Master Aferar, thank you for coming to see us today."

"It is a pleasure to be here as always Masters."

Greetings out of the way, the council got down to business.

"Have the ledger read that Master Kiel Aferar is requestion to take Lirinid Xull'Izz as a padawan. Xull'Izz is a special case of youngling. He is not only a late comer to the Jedi, aged eight on arrival and thirteen now. His parents were an unnamed Aquar and a Wroonian woman by the name of Liara Xull'Izz. This is interesting due to the rarity of Aquar lineage in the Jedi and that the child of an uncommon... parents."

The council member saying all of this was only repeating this for the recording, which would be archived for some time later. Hardly for the Master before them who was already acquainted with the boy.

"Master Aferar, why is it you have requested to take Xull'Izz as a padawan? I understand that water-breathing species tend to take similar padawans, but Xull'Izz is nearly incapable of operating his gills due to a lack of Aquar parent. It may be too ate for him to develop proper skills."

"Yes, he may be only half an aquar, but I feel that under my guidance he can develop him in the manner that his parents could not. If he can not overcome his disability, then so be it, he will not breathe naturally underwater. I am taking Xull'Izz as a padawan because I feel a reminiscent air of my master, these two share some similarities."

Many of the present council nodded in approval, Aferar's master had been a half Wroonian who had also been late to join the Jedi. The death of this great Jedi had been recent so the subject would not be pressed, but a point had been made.

"I believe the council supports your choice now. I have one final question. Do you feel that Lirinid Xull'Izz can become a Jedi knight one day?"

The obvious doubt placed on the boy was made clear. Aferar was almost insulted.

"Masters, if Lirinid Xull'Izz can not become a Jedi knight by the age of twenty, I will be surprised."

This was an incredibly bold statement, Lirinid Xull'Izz was probably one of the Jedi with the least potential. It would be surprising if he became a knight at the age of thirty, the young age of Twenty would be astounding.

Overcome

Lirinid, usually called Liri by his master, performed well from the start, the motivation of having a master obviously raising his spirits. The first request presented was, 'teach me to breathe.' Aferar immediately accepted and took the boy to Glee Anselm. There they spent a year living amongst the normal citizens of the planet.

On Glee Anselm, Liri became a natural swimmer, his digits were webbed and he had the beginnings of a fin down his spine, making him naturally a more capable swimmer than most Nautolan even with his shortfall in his gills. His gills were diagnosed as inoperable at a young age, but Aferar refused to believe this.

Aferar would always be remembered as Liri's father figure in life. His lessons would never be forgotten.
