Xiann nodded along as Clove described her own example of the danger of inexperience, quite an apt one at that. She doubted that anyone would ever be able to count the number of casualties caused by dropped grenades and ill-aimed artillery. Then her companion fell silent and, seemingly, into a deep thought while staring at her. It obviously wasn’t the first time she had seen someone stare at her, especially when she was in a similar pose, but this felt different. It didn’t feel like The Selphi was ogling or undressing her in her head. Perhaps Clove’s innocence was far greater than Xiann had previously thought.
The Twi’lek leaned back to sit upright as the other returned to reality and answered the question. Xiann’s smile quickly disappeared and her entire body visibly recoiled slightly at the mention of beating the Sith. She sat in place for a few moments as Clove continued. “Don’t…” She practically snapped but paused to compose herself for a few seconds. “Never underestimate your enemies. It will only lead to ruin.” Xi took a deep breath to calm herself properly, “Try not to overestimate them either. That will lead to missed opportunities. But if you must do one, it’s better to overestimate their power. It’s better to miss an opportunity than to give one to them.”
Xiann took a large spoonful of ice cream and let it melt in her mouth before letting out a sigh and looking Clove dead in the eye, her face looking more serious than when she was checking for an injury, “When you are fighting for survival, you’re goal isn’t to win the fight. It’s to not lose. Don’t hang around longer than you have to. If you see an opening that will let you flee, take it. You don’t have to beat your opponent, just escape them. If you can beat them, great, but don’t risk your life on it.”
Another sigh escaped the Twi’lek as she leaned back against one of the cabinets, “Like I said at the start, I will teach you how to survive. Hopefully what I teach you can help you win too, but winning is pointless if you overreach and die too. The Jedi will probably say something like, ‘It is our duty to protect the innocent.’ or something equally as self-righteous. But you can’t save anybody if you are killed by the first Si-” She stopped halfway through the word, clearly still severely afflicted by her previous encounter, “By the first challenge you come across. Better to escape and live today so you can fight tomorrow.”
She looked back up at Clove and gave her a weak smile, “Sorry, bit of a rant there, but it was important. So if you forget everything else I ever teach you, remember that.”
