DESCRIPTION​

The Longbeam-class utility cruiser is a class of small corvette which was originally developed by Republic Fleet Systems for the Galactic Republic during the early part of the High Republic Era. Meant to equip rapid response forces of the Republic Defense Coalition, the Longbeam was never truly intended for war, being lightly armed for its size and equipped with various crisis response amenities.

The Longbeam is some 60 meters in length, and is flown by a crew of 9, plus up to 24 passengers and 500 tons of cargo. Armament includes a pair of dual medium laser turrets on the ends of the hammerhead-like prow, a pair of fixed, forward-firing heavy laser cannons, and a 6-shot concussion missile launcher. There is also a tractor beam, as well as a number of external docking points, not to mention a small internal docking bay, which usually houses a small shuttle or similar craft. Amenities include a 6-bed medbay equipped to hospital spec, plus a general purpose scientific laboratory. Top speed is 60 MGLT, with acceptable handling, plus a class 1 hyperdrive with a class 4 backup.

At the time of its construction, the Longbeam incorporated a number of highly advanced technologies, and though it was expensive to produce, the Republic under Chancellor Lina Soh considered them worth the investment. The type was well liked by its crews, and first distinguished itself during the Great Hyperspace Disaster, both in emergency relief efforts and later in combat against the Nihil. It was simultaneously a symbol of Republic strength and resolve, and also of its mercy and compassion.

Over time, the Longbeam passed into obsolescence, and was taken out of service shortly before the end of the High Republic era. In the present day, they are not easy to find outside museums and private collection, although a few planetary defense fleets in out-of-the-way systems still count them as part of their inventory.

LEGALITY​

Restricted. Longbeam-class utility cruiser are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities.
