Lorewise, what does it require to become a Jedi Knight?

Okay so my current idea for the pivotal moment of my character's biography is to have him effectively cheat his way from Padawan to Knighthood in an effort to join the Lord's Army in their effort against the Sith. His Master would be one of the Jedi who had chosen not to join the war effort as of yet (since the Jedi Order as a whole hasn't formally declared war on the Sith) and since at that point of time he'd still be a padawan he would effectively be tied to his Master.

What I need to know if what is required to go from Padawan to Knighthood so that I could figure out the best way to effectively have my character approach cheating the system or if it is even a realistic option at all? What would be expected of someone deserving to reach the rank of Knight?

There's not really any good way to cheat the system. The main known official trial method is that on Lothal, wherein a Padawan has to confront their deepest fears and come out of it all alive (fairly easy to get yourself killed with that temple, the way they make it sound). There's other stuff beyond that that needs done; look at this link in order to learn more about what virtues and skills Padawans are expected to show. These would generally have to be supervised or at least recognized by the council/a person's master (if we're being informal with our Jedi)/the Jedi Lord&Generals, and you'd have to have evidence of what happened so that they could know it was real.

Trying to pull one over on any of those mentioned like that won't work out well.

EDIT: @K-97, think about it this way: your Padawan could easily have disobeyed his master and gone off to fight, thinking it the right thing to do and that it was the will of the Force, and you can try and convince some Jedi among the army to intercede with the council on your behalf, and make a fun little personal plot out of it.

Yo, if you decide to run with the personal plot that Elijah mentioned, I'd love to be involved. I think we'd have to retroactively come up with past experience between our characters so that mine would be willing to stick up for yours, but I write her as a bit of a rogue, so to speak, so she wouldn't mind throwing in for a Padawan to go to war against the wishes of the council/whoever.

We also accept Padawans into our fold to fight.. then you can start at padawan and work with a new master or peers to reach knighthood.

Exactly! Join us as a Padawan regardless of your master, somebody else can take you on as a Padawan, and we'll report your bravery and devotion to the light side to the council and argue with them to make sure you get to stay a jedi and things'll be great.
