Description: The REC-74 is a powerful, long ranged, electromagnetically accelerated railgun rifle developed by M.D.A.I. This means that the rounds are launched out of the barrel magnetically, utilizing two metal rails arranged in parallel inside the barrel. In conjunction with a large electrical current generated from a separate source, the rail system is able to launch its rounds with significantly more force than chemical propulsion. Ammunition can also be smaller while still inflicting dramatically more damage than firearms using chemical propulsion, because the entire round is launched and devoted to impact, as opposed to a large portion of a cased round being wasted on chemical propellant and ejected upon firing, leaving only the small tip (bullet) to be launched.

The weapon's large magazine, located under the midsection of the gun, holds up to forty rounds of precut tungsten cores that is ready to be fed into the rifle's powerful gauss systems and launch it toward an enemy. Because of this, actual ammunition is hardly ever a problem in the field, only obtaining the necessary batteries to power the railgun array and refilling the amunition once every forty rounds.

All REC-74 models use small, disk shaped battery to power the rail system and propel the 10 millimeter rounds out of the barrel, meaning the rounds require absolutely no chemical propulsion whatsoever. Each battery can power the propulsion to the forty rounds held within the magazine. With a soldier's standard carrying capacity of eight battery, this gives the user a maximum of 320 rounds battery-wise.

The rounds themselves are 10x50 millimeter rail-propelled armor-piercing slugs with a tungsten core that have a boattail design, that are coated in a plassteel jacket, making it particularly effective at tearing through the armor and flesh of enemy infantry.

The Spear can be fired on full-auto accurately and at long range without the round "dipping" thanks to its rail propulsion system but rounds begin to splinter at long ranges when the trigger is held down too long. Using the REC-74's built-in smartlink scope can significantly improve the weapon's accuracy, as well as firing in short bursts or single shots, kneeling, or making use of gyro stabilizers. Incorporating miniature inertial dampeners keyed into the firing mechanisms to reduce the recoil.

[ST]Couple things. First, the round you're firing is basically as big as the bullet from a Russian 14.5MM heavy machine gun. They're incredibly big and there's no way you could carry more than 10 or 20 in a box magazine.

Second, I'm really uncomfortable with the vague 'hypersonic' muzzle velocity you gave. Could you give me a hard number in meters? Also remember that the faster you launch a round, the harder the rifle kicks; there's almost no practical reason to have a rifle round go faster than 850m/s unless you expect to do a lot of sniping work. Most modern infantry combat tends to take place at ranges under 400 meters, iirc, so you should also keep that in mind.

The electro-magnetic jacketing system on the projectiles has to go.

The 'recoilless' element of the rifle also has to go.

edit: Also, unless the caliber is drastically reduced, I'm going to ask that you make it accept traditional magazines of ammunition rather than have the ability to 'shave off' ammo Mass Effect-style.[/ST]
