Nobody could explain the tragedy, when they found the two bodies and the crying, starving infant. Both parents interlocked in death a few paces from the crib, her from strangulation, him from the dozen stab wounds that matched the knife they had to break from her right hand. A day longer and the child would have joined them, if only a neighbor passing by hadn’t felt the urge to break into the house for no intelligible reason.

But life was hard on Ryloth. Poverty was rampant. A newborn with no parents was a burden none had the means take on, no matter how pitiable. In a public orphanage Nefid was left to rot, and there it was only a few months before her fate was sealed. Starving again but for interaction this time, the baby’s ability to learn language, read facial expressions or express emotions of her own went unseized and forever closed.

Nefid might have spent the rest of her life as little more than a houseplant if not for her powers. Crucially, her mind did not need language to communicate. From the earliest age she showcased the ability to evoke feelings in others, impulses, more and more refined as she aged until in her early teens they could practically replace words. If only that were all, but rumor spread that the girl could also make others see things that weren’t there; fights erupted in her presence, people acted unlike themselves, grew afraid and somehow blamed her as Nefid experimented with the full range of emotions that she had been denied.

At the age of fourteen, years before she would have had to leave the orphanage upon reaching majority, the mute girl was expelled, an illegal decision taken in last resort as she was driving every resident to the edge of madness. Condemned to the streets, what ought to have been a death sentence instead unraveled quietly as Nefid always seemed to attract enough charity to survive. When she snuck places, guards ignored her or looked the other way. When she stole, victims forgot ever owning the items after a few seconds.

It was a Sith master named Dromidae who knew her for what she was. Not a Sith, but enough. And he could think of many uses for the girl’s unusual talents…

Short, quiet, diminutive; light grey skin, darker lips and eyes, accessorizes in black. Not one to attract attention.

In appearance: empty, wide-eyed, inexperienced, fascinated. Beyond the surface: mysterious, manipulative, intrigued by emotions in others and will seize opportunities to alter them with her powers, if only to satiate her whims. Seeks only to become more powerful in the Force; cares little for rank and material possessions, and her methods can be chaotic and less-than-direct.

Nefid is a unique Force sensitive with an innate gift for mind-altering Force powers, including the manipulation of emotions, perceptions, desires, and memories. She is mute and communicates through telepathy. However, this specialization comes at a price: unlike almost every Force-sensitive alive, Nefid is incapable of using even basic telekinesis, speed or strength-enhancing powers, or other powers outside her niche.

Aside from Force powers, she owns a Sith lightsaber but cannot use it very effectively, and is otherwise a functioning—though young—member of society, capable of piloting basic crafts, cooking, and other everyday tasks.
