Hi, any suggestions on where to get started are welcome. Any particular areas/factions needing more numbers? Got some ideas for characters but looking to keep it simple for now i.e. no force users.

Welcome!

I would read the rules if you haven't already. Then check out the faction write-ups.

I would point you towards the Republic for what you're looking for. Not only do they need members quite badly, they also aren't Force-based and give you the option to make both a combat and a social character.

Welcome!

If you want to keep to non-force users. There are several options. As Reya said there's the Republic Faction with both the Senate and the Border Alliance. There's plenty of Indie Factions as well. Then there is also the Sacred Band of Ziost (I may have spelled this wrong....Eli don't kill me) they're non-force Sith supporters. Keep in mind that if you think there's a possibility of you wanting to make a force weilding Jedi or a Sith later then you shouldn't join the Republic and I'd steer you to an Indie faction. You can only have characters in one of the main three factions. So that means choosing between Jedi, Republic, and Sith. Now if you don't plan on making a Jedi or Sith. Then go for the Republic. I just wanted you aware of the faction rule so you can make the best decision for what you want to get out of the site in the future.

Thank you guys, I was initially considering Republic and Border Alliance but now you've mentioned the rule about other characters and being closed off to Jedi later I might have to look into Indie. Hmmmm difficult choice. That would explain why they're quite thin on the ground.

What if a character played out to the point of death, would I be able to start afresh in a different faction with no other affiliations?

Or is the rule I can have Indie and go one of the main factions later?
Should I make a noble sacrifice and never be a Jedi...

If you have no surviving characters in a faction and would like to switch, you can. Some people have done it already even though it's early in the timeline. (cough cough @Raydo) However, I would recommend not switching factions all the time. You'll probably want to stay in your original one for a month or two.

Yeah I can appreciate that, I'd want to find my footing and get immersed here first. I'd play out a character and wouldn't intentionally seek out death.
Ok, well if it's a done thing and one day I can play a Jedi that puts my mind at ease.
Thanks for the help.

Yes sorry if the character is dead/archived, you can switch factions. I didn't know what exactly you were thinking. You can have up to three characters max. But only be in one of the main factions (with two character max in that).

So like I have one Jedi and two Indies. People in Indies can be force-sensitive as well. There are a lot of former Sith/Jedi running around in the Indies. So that's an option as well. Or you could just have an untrained force sensitive (my Indie Evie is an untrained force sensitive for exam). If you do run a former Jedi/Sith, run it past one of the FLs/AFLs for approval of your history. I don't think this is mandatory, but it's polite to do so.

I know this can all be super confusing. So feel free to keep throwing out the questions! Or PM me if you need particular advice/help.

There is no restriction. People are allowed to switch whenever they want. Though faction loyalty does help.

If you're looking at non-FS sides, an idea of how to test things how is to create an independent mercenary. That mercenary can do a couple threads with both BA and Sacred Band, allowing you to determine which side best suits you and then later have your mercenary join that side.
